Vocal booths. What are they? Why do we need them? Today we're going to go over all of that. We'll also go over a vocal booth you can make at home for under a quarter of the price of a professional recording booth.

Civil engineer here - I stumbled upon this video as i am looking for ways to make myself a diy booth too and I have one problem with the booth you constructed - make some diagonal pipes as well - if someone clumsy enough bumps into the booth it could easily "fold" itself (as it is not statically stable) and likely get the joints damaged and you will have to redo it. Other than that thanks for some new stuff to keep in mind. Great video ;)

Dude, are you joking? Memory foam mattresses cost about $500+ each. I could buy myself a decent pre-made vocal booth for that amount of money. Unless you assumed that I already have 4 memory foam mattresses, which would imply I have a family, or roommates, that would let me tear up their mattress fro recording vocals.... LOL.

Most problems I am hearing in home studio's is the fact that I can hear rumble a lot of times. Sure, you can cut the low end off, but in a lot of cases it cuts off the body of the voice as well. Also it's not the way you want to encounter the problem, you want to eliminate the low frequency vibrations that came from your neighbors walking or traffic, that traveled thru all the concrete and wood, into the mic stand and the actual walls off your vocal booth. Maybe with budget studio mics it's not that big of a problem but when working with more expensive models it could be. They can be real sensitive and pick up the tiniest vibrations, add some compression to the channel and you can hear your neighbors television, walking around and stuff. So my suggestion is to start from the bottom. Build a good soundproof floor, it's about the hardest thing to soundproof but most times it's worth the effort. You don't have to do the whole floor, only the part where the booth is standing. There are numerous ways to build a soundproof floor. But I think the prefab tiles are good to start with and make the easiest way to do the job.

Very good and helpful plans. Thank you. Cost me $66.30 for the PVC frame (no blankets) --> all from Home Depot including the PVC cutters (which were awesome and so easy to use) and the shower rings. Also, I needed 8 of the 10-foot pipes to build the default size in the calculator.. might want to grab 9 in case you make a mistake. Took me under 2 hours to measure, cut, and build the PVC pipe frame.

Good idea, but for about $200 you can get some wood, rockwool, and screws to build a booth that will capture a wider frequency range. I tried the blanket method at first but I noticed the blankets only really helped with higher frequencies. Low frequencies (deep voices) were still coming through the blankets a little. My booth walls were built like so; Key: r=rockwool (4in), p=plywood, f=acoustic foam (2in), e=empty space (2in), b=burlap fabric p_e_r_b_f The empty space helps with those low reflections, the walls are a bit thick but a buddy of mine can play a saxaphone in there and very little noise comes out into the room. I put a bit more work/money into my booth but you could build a very good booth for vocals with just some wood and some rockwool, maybe some screen mesh stapled around it to keep it all together. Anyway still a very good tip/idea, kudos.

FYI, even at $5-10k it's still Cheaper to just buy one if you can't diy and plan to hire a carpenter. A basic build with a door, a window, 4 walls, a ceiling and floor covered with sound dampening on inside and outside basic finish like speaker box carpet or paint would likely be 4-6 days 8 hours a day. When you add materials and labor it would be very hard to compete with a company capable of building multiple booths every day. This is one of the most basic simple diy projects I've found.

I don't have a walkin closet in my apartment. Just a normal closet and it sounded VERY dry. I put the mic between a bunch of tshirts, put a blanket behind it, and then put up a curtain rod behind me to hang more blankets. Sounded really dry. However, the reason I'm here looking for other solutions is that I share my closet wall with my neighbor's bedroom and I don't really want to be singing to them.

Have used something like this for a few years now....easy to tear down / transport if needed. My major tip, do NOT use moving blankets if you can. Their tight weave bounces a LOT of high mid / treble back at ya. Those Producers Choice blankets is the way to go IMHO. The BIG difference between mine & this one is mine IS a booth, 4'x4' with a height of 6.5". This means by blankets are double over for even more isolation.

They work great, but my mic is so good, it pics up on all the chatter all the way in my living room- and that’s with Noise Gate! So, thanks to your video, I am boing to make a sort of crescent booth with roof, so I can be near my desk station and record, cutting out all the extra chatter that I was picking up with my cleaning blankets and crescent booth! You rock!

Interesting! I was prepared to be a bit dismissive, but really good points were brought up. Plus, I'll admit I hadn't thought of using PVC pipes and acoustic blankets in such a way. That's a modular setup you could use for many applications! Just use 2 planes for the back of a drum kit. Use the full set for bass. Use parts for various guitars. Quite genius, really! My only addition would be, if you have no budget and must use a closet, don't sing into the closet, but rather out of it. Then use of the reflection filter(which I would only, but have yet to, and probably won't spend money on used) in front and you have a workable cheap setup. Use eq to accommodate for resonant frequencies in the room. Cheers!

Blanket tents suck up your highs and leave only the lows. They sound muffled. I made a tent just like this. In a small booth you need 6 to 8” of absorption to suck up the low frequencies. Most voice actors who make there own booths don’t realize this sound is not acceptable

OK. So I followed this video to the letter and here's a few issues I ran across 1. Your link to the size calculator doesn't work. It sends you to some random site about quitting your day job and becoming a musician. Luckily it's not so hard to figure out on your own 2. You said you need 14 Tee joints when in fact you need at least 15 as I couldn't complete the third pole at the top. I'd argue the true figure is about 20 as I think I'm going to need to complete the square of the bottom and reinforce this a bit 3. This thing if f****** flimsy. Im using 21.5mm poles as its the cheapest available with the same size joints. Some of the poles keep popping out of the joints so I'm sure I'm gonna need glue or duct tape. Also what weight were the curtains you used as this is bending like Korra 4. Havent tried it but I think an electric jigsaw would work better that hand cutting it as its very hard to cut it straight 5. My local B&Q wouldn't cut these for me so I had to do this in the car park with the saw I purchased. Not a criticism to you. Just bloody mad they wouldn't help me

I'm hoping to use your size calculator but I can't seem to get it to work. I get stuck on the survey, unable to submit. Is it down or do I have a problem on my side??

Curious if it’s possible to expand this design to make it more sound isolating? Eg if you just tripled the amount of blankets presumably that would help? And maybe put something in between each layer of blankets? And then something on the floor too? Any suggestions to use the same design but increase the sound isolation? I’m moving into a unit and going to be running a studio out of there but it’s noisy so I need the most sound protection possible on a budget. I’m not bothered about total sound isolation but as much as I can get without going over say $1000

Hey Julius, did you ever figure out a solution? The biggest reason I'm looking to get a vocal booth is that I need to be able to practice singing in my apartment bedroom without disturbing my roommate or my neighbors.

I clicked on the link, why is it take me to a video instead of the blueprint?

I am stuck at the moment because I've been doing my vocal practice in my apartment, and due to COVID, my neighbour is now working from home. The issue with me "disturbing" her is escalating. I've tried to negotiate practicing at the end of her work day, when she walks her dog, but today, she hadn't left yet, and in a passive aggressive way, she turned her radio way up, right underneath me (kitchens) I don't know what to do. Even this set up is too much, and too expensive!

where can you buy these acoustic blankets in the philippines?

I just looked up the blankets on the website you mentioned and the cheapest option is $214 each...

You can go even cheaper with a ply wood frame and some material (I used old jeans) with glue for hinges. The bonus to using material hinges is that if you space them out enough you can fold the whole booth up.

Mattresses are too dense. The lower frequencies are not absorbed and bounce back. You need porous material with air pockets like rock wool.

My closet is about the same size as that vocal booth... could I just layer the walls and roof with blankets and get the same effect?

What about dampening the sound. I sing Metal and have some annoying issues with the neighbours.. Will mattresses do the trick?
