Billiken originated as a god of happiness that American female artist Florence Pretz saw in a dream in 1908. It is a naked statue with a pointed head, raised eyebrows, and a halo on its back that resembles that of a Buddha. It was believed that carrying it would bring good fortune, and it became popular all over the world. This lucky mascot, which was a huge hit around the world at the time, spread all the way to Shinsekai, a downtown area in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, where it is enshrined in a tower called Tsutenkaku and is still loved as a god for the common people.
