I tested one and it’s seriously impressive. The luxury is notable, so are the gadgets. And Genesis bring you the car plus an expert driver to your house to test it!

Thanks Matt I agree with pretty much everything. I have owned one, in the UK, for eleven months, and I am very happy with it. It's great to have silent luxury when you want it. And then the power of a small rocket when needed. It's been 100% reliable in that time. Yes, it's range is not the best, but that does not bother me at all. I am lucky to have a home charger, and have only used public chargers a few times in nearly a year. I can charge from 20% to 80% overnight for about £4. That will last me a week. There are things that annoy me. The unnecessary bongs when you turn on, for example. And the warning noise for pedestrians at low speed is very audible in the cabin. One thing you did not mention was that there is a five-year warranty and also free servicing for 5 years. They also collect and return your car for you. It also has a UK three-pin mains socket. Very useful when our for a picnic or camping. All in all, a great place to be when travelling.

Great review Matt. Your take on the gap between EVs and the charging infrastructure is spot on. The Government needs to realise this is why the uptake is so slow on EVs not set targets for the manufacturers..

We live in a flat and have a garage in a block. They cannot even split the electric bills by flat so we could install a charger. No way are we relying on the public infrastructure.

And the very next day, the government pushes back the ban on sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 5 years. Nice timing, and recognition that indeed the infrastructure isn't anywhere near ready.

I hired a Polestar for three weeks over summer to go around the Cotswalds and south-west England. I was expecting a disaster but it was actually fine. There are many caveats to that, mostly that I was on holidays and could afford the time, but I was surprised because, as you say, I found the rest of the country has turned into a basket case. Mind you, if I didn't have the ability to charge at home, I wouldn't even consider an EV.
@davidperry3531

It’s obvious that the UK is just not ready for EVs for most car owners so it’s no wonder the date for ban of sale of ICs has blown out by 5 years. Even then, there are so many other factors that come into play during the next few years, the major one being affordability to purchase and the huge depreciation factor and of course the ease (or difficulty ) of charging and of course the range. If I was living in the UK, I would be buying an economical IC car now not an EV.
@jimbandit1250sa

I completely agree with the charging ordeal. Last year I went with my dad to Israel and we swapped homes and cars with these people, I’m from the Netherlands btw. They had a electric Volvo xc40 which was a nice car to use, but when we wanted to make a far trip which required charging we ran in to problems, first we had to download an app (with expensive data) then it was in Hebrew without and option for English. And we weren’t allow to register because we’re Dutch. Then we went to the next one and it didn’t allow a Dutch phone number on their stupid app. We went inside the gas station to ask if we can pay by card and it was impossible. I have no idea why it works like this, just imagine you go to Shell and the force you to use an app, it’s insane.

I own an i3 and I concur the infrastructure is appalling, my i3 meets my local needs but panning a longer journey is stressful due to, charging points listed as available to find they are not or only the trickle charge is available, then there are the - you need to download an app, enter all credentials (hugely time consuming) and no guarantee the account will activate (first hand experience). I charge my i3 at home over night, very inexpensive via the 3 pin plug, and I own a (W209) 2005 CLK for longer journeys or emergency use. Considering the number of EV’s on the road and the government are pushing for more car drivers to switch, the country is not prepared now, it’s already behind.

It's a lovely car, we've had one in for a review for about 2 weeks. The beeping is highly annoying, the suspension is too firm for their luxury approach - but other than that, probably one of the best midsize-SUV-EV's out there..
@pomerau
@pomerau 9 месяцев назад
Curious ... which beeping sounds? (I haven't been in one) Parking / door opening / seat belt / fart alerter (one day ... !) Also interested in the ride. Is it on the same EV design wheels? and I presume there is no suspension settings option, whicjh I'll look in to. A Chinese gent I drive for will be looking at an SUV for school runs etc as a second car, but is hooked on a British brand so more likely a Range Rover. (I don't know what the Chinese attitude is to Korean brands!) I like the genesis models I've seen, and spoke to a salesman once in a Westfield SC store.
@onemorelap
@onemorelap 9 месяцев назад
@@pomerau There is a Korean-style 8-bit bell-kinda welcome-tune (you can turn that off), but the driver alerts, trunk operations and many more things beep at you. It's a high pitch beep, so I thought it was annoying. I would have loved to see an air-suspension like in the e-tron - but that's the weak-point for me in the Genesis lineup currently, GV80 and GV70 are too firm and riding "too cheap", like going over potholes and so on, for what the rest of the car is / wants to be. I drove it on Swiss back roads, which are comparable to your b-roads.
@pomerau
@pomerau 9 месяцев назад
@@onemorelap Thanks. I know what you mean now. I would hope they could dial that out, or have silenced most of them for the UK. I don't know. Kinda takes away from the prestige image. "You own our expensive car but it looks like you're an idiot so we'll keep reminding you and when you learn we'll keep reminding you anyway". I drove a standard 3.0 Cayenne for a family on mostly school runs over 3 years from 2018. They / she involved me in configuring it. Smallest wheel size 19" but better alloy design, but they decided against PASM and regretted it. It could really rock diagonally over poor surfaces at town speeds however hard I tried to steer and balance it. Sorry for the meandering autobiography! I'm glad you are mostly enjoying the GV70, and hope that it's just a bit bumpy and hard in a straight line but you can put up with it. I hope they listen to feedback for the next generation, though at your expense. Both the standard Porsche and also the Jaguar I-Pace were terrible at rocking you and your passengers around at low speeds.

Your rant at the end said it all Matt. It's time that there was a roll-out of charging machines at fuel stations and elsewhere where you simply plug in, then pay (by card at the machine or at the same pay desk as everyone else). That'll immediately remove one of the biggest concerns of many of us older, less IT savvy motorists about the switch to electric. Perhaps it should become a legal requirement that all electric cars and car charging points should work this way........

An excellent looking vehicle, glad you’ve run it for a few weeks before giving a review, too many ‘reviews’ are from driving for an hour or two. The only bad bit being the range at 230 its not practical for tripping especially as Genesis don’t have their own charging network, pity. I imagine they will eventually produce the same car with a 400 to 500 mile range, its only a matter of time as things settle down in the electric car market. Having had EV’s since 2014 we settled for our ‘retirement’ car last year, yes its a Tesla the only folk who include charging in their car package !

Evening Matt - Genesis is very popular here in Qatar and both this and the larger GV80 are quite common among those 'in the know' - the larger GV80 is extremely popular. Not available as an EV but at the equivalent of 45p a litre for petrol, EVs are yet to be widely seen, although the charging infrastructure is growing now. Interestingly, it is the luxury EV (Audi eTron, Porsche Taycan, etc) that is mostly seen and these are bought by the wealthy who already have the Land Cruiser, Silverado/Sierra, Porsche and Ferrari tucked up in the garage and are viewed as another toy to own and be seen in. And with Qatar only being 200km north to south and 100km east to west, there is never much need to be concerned about range anxiety - and if you do want to travel the length or breadth of the place (and most do not) then take the Land Cruiser. Excellent vehicles these - great video and nice to see a review that is not focussed on badge snobbery.

Totally agree with your views on EVs Matt in fact from a couple of years back when everyone was focusing on "Range Anxiety", my view was that really wasn't the main problem, it was the time it takes to recharge them. As to why this is the "real problem" is because most people who live in cities won't have the chance of overnight charging at home because they live in flats etc so the amount of public charging points becomes: number of vehicles x charging time equals y thousand charging points per 10,000 cars and that just won't happen :)

It could happen very easily actually but the government is too concerned with destroying the NHS, giving tax breaks to the ultra rich and screwing over regular people. Enablers and pessimists like you are part of the problem. After World War Two, this country built affordable houses for millions, created a national health service and social security and totally revolutionised society for the better. Nowadays, these idiots can't even tie their own shoelaces. Sunak just this week has invented the idea that there's a war on motorists 😂 and that our climate change commitments are no longer needed. This is after a year in which they've been allowing the water companies to pollute every river in Britain. No doubt morons like you will be voting for them at the next election. If you ever get the Lexus UX 250h F Sport in then I'd love to see a video on it. Had it as a hire car when my actual car was crashed into and even though I only had it for a week, I fell in love with it to the point I'm going to consider a Lexus when I'm ready to step up from a hatchback

You have provided an excellent explanation as to what EVs are yet to take hold. There are too many issues that go beyond the vehicle itself.

I completely agree with you Matt. Way to much faffing about to tempt me away from my petrol car. No wonder Rishi has pushed back the date for petrol cars ⭐️

Faffing about? I spend way less time plugging in and unplugging my EV at home, than you do just *driving* to petrol stations to fill up.

Great review and totally agree with your take on the ownership experience / infrastructure - it currently ruins what are becoming really good cars - I have tried running three separate EV’s (E-Tron / Q4 E-Tron & ipace) great cars in themselves but the experience is ruined by being full of range anxiety and stress to charge up…. sadly the equation just does not work so not for me 😊

Have to agree with you on the current infrastructure, nowhere near good enough! When used as a city/second car though nothing can beat them, I absolutely love mine!

Brilliant review and kudos to Genesis for climbing to the top of the ladder. Could you review a 2018 and above used BMW 7 series, preferably diesel. Seriously considering one.

That is simply stunning! But I agree in the charging issues. I have basically stopped charging my hybrid Volvo, which is quite a shame.

EVs make a lot of sense if you have a large roof you can install solar on and a wall box.

Well it's a good job we have been given an extra 5 years before we need the buy one. I have a Toyota Corolla Hybrid. In my opinion Hybrid is still the best option at this time. The GV 70 does look nice, Could be an option for a used one in serval years.

Very balanced review of a lovely car. As someone who does over 200 miles a day I just could not, sadly, rely on this car to keep me to some very tight schedules so, its still diesel for me until the infrastructure, range and speed of charging improves.

Great review Matt. A very impressive car but well beyond my budget by a country mile and then some! The range and all the charging nonsense puts me right off I just couldn't put up with the "faff" involved!

A really interesting video 👏👏 The boost button looks dangerously fun! Interior just gorgeous, other manufacturers please take a look and understand that it’s not necessary to have depressing all black interiors. Totally agree regarding electric charging etc. ‘Harry’s Garage’ said similar things. Charging cables/plugs etc need to be standardised.

I'm a fully paid up petrol head and proud of it. I love the automobile have done since I was 10. Now, old age ( I'M 75 at Christmas) and getting into my E class coupe is frankly comical add to this my beloved struggles to push the door open far enough to get out! So my choice of a 500SL as my last car is out of the question. My motoring needs as opposed to want says small SUV, my usage ie 40 miles per week average an electric car is my best option.

1:15 Luxury divisions of a brand comes about when a company's name has been devalued by cheap tat ... (Citroen and DS are the main case in point). Going the other way, Mazda never needed Xedos and quickly killed it off. Cars being sold under aliases doesn't cut it with me.

I was behind one of these coming back from work the other day: comes in under the radar, not too ostentatious from the outside and round my way it’d be way less likely to get nicked than something like a Range or Bentayga! You’d think if the continent can get everyone using USB-C for mobile devices they’d be able to get some charging standards in place for cars (unless you have/can use the Tesla network which is still a distant 1st for mile munchers) but early days still hence the delay on the petrol/diesel ban in the news today.

I saw one today in Leeds for the first time and i loved the look especially the rear shoulders where the chrome trim and and windows come round the C pillar, nice and i agree the infrastructure isn't in place ! And the costs involved are mad 😔
