The manga was actually used by Hyuga-sensei to "fix" some parts of the LN. Maomao being terrified and disgusted is more in line with how she generally reacts to Lakan thanks to her first encounter with him. The anime is following the LN in this part.
My interpretation of her saying she is of lowly birth is because she see's the doctor as her dad and wants nothing to do with Lakan. So that's kind of her way of affirming that the doctor is really her dad to her.
You are both right and wrong. Maomao is disgusted by her father. To accept she's a noble means recognizing he's her dad. Regardless, she is a noble, even if she doesn't live like one.
@@andrewsuryali8540 just to add, she is a noble now, too. Lakan has not disowned her, and even wants her to move in with him. Since he accepts her as his daughter, she is rightfully aa noble. This is why he keeps trying to buy her from the Verdigris house.
@@Ncyphen Yes. She is a new noble. My point is that her low birth is literally true. This is not too much of a problem in the European feudal system, but due to the Chinese (and Japanese) caste system, in China traditionally only children born after the ennoblement of their father is considered a proper noble, unless the children themselves then get ennobled (which is impossible for Maomao because she is a woman). In Maomao's case she'd be considered a noble daughter but not one to be sought after unless Lakan has no other heirs. Conversely, as shown in Dreams of Red Mansions, proper noble daughters were highly sought after even when their family was destitute and ruined. Basically, Chinese nobility were very strict about the actual circumstances of a birth. Ironically, Maoamo technically has EXACTLY the right social status to be eligible as a consort in the rear palace.
Maomao is remarkably consistent. She is someone who can take hints and figure out the truth on her own. But she does not want to stick her neck out. Her foster father even raised her to not speak about speculations. That's why she never asks the questions that truly matter and spontaneously denies her own deductions about Jinshi (or anything political ftm).
So well said! Because her adoptive father always told her not to make speculations, she dismisses her theories, not even realizing how close she’s hitting the truth.
Honestly, I love how they animated that scene of maomao. It's way different on how it was drawn from the manga BUT the weight of both are very suspenseful. Really makes you think a lot. But all will be resolved at the end of this arc. 💕
Original Source is still the Light Novel from which it is adapted. Manga adaption, as is often the case, is just used to take reference for Character designs, especially ones who have not gotten a Illustration in the LNs
@@Sheppart92 I never read any light novels but the manga's art style on this one is just soooo detailed and superb. I bet both manga and anime did justice on the LN. 💕
I hear you. I cannot wait for the episode with Go. I can't wait to see (spoilers byond for those who do not know) . . . . . . . . . Lakan break out in hard emotion when he realize the woman he loves is still alive. The story handles it so well, making you hate and detest the guy as some kind of villain, when really he was heartbroken "knowing" the woman he loved was dead and longed to be a father to Maomao. Maomao dancing to celebrate the purchase of her mom felt amazing. Where I'm at in the novels, Maomao's mom has already passed away. Lakan was heartbroken again and lost his mind in grief for several months.
If you recall Lakan's story, back before Maomao was born he didn't have the funds to buy out her mom, but now he's able to casually offer to buy Maomao from Jinshi, plus he hangs out with one of the three princesses like it's nothing. Most likely he wasn't a noble YET back then, so Maomao is right in that she isn't high-born. Lakan only got ennobled through his rise in the imperial military hierarchy, but that happened long after Maomao was already born.
well I wouldn't say that's so much from the power of his position, but just rather how insanely intelligent he is, especially as a strategist.@@belleboni2016
@@runajain5773 In the LN and manga Jinshi equated him to Taikoubou (Taigong Wang / Jiang Ziya). For context, Jiang Ziya in history was the grand strategist and head of the military of the Zhou dynasty who was also co-founder of the dynasty. In fiction, Jiang Ziya was the man who literally "created" the Chinese gods; elevating the great heroes and supernatural beings involved in the Zhou Usurpation to divine status by petitioning Heaven. That is to say, Lakan occupies the post of top military strategist and is in charge of personnel promotions in the army.

Leoman (or Luoman, I can never remember) and the Verdigris house know. They told Maomao to hide because Lakan keeps trying to buy his daughter to be a father to her.
She knows he's the father, that's why she ALWAYS said, she doesn't wanna go anywhere near the military section of the palace, since her father is the strategist
@@zellrang This is a spoiler, but... Maomao didn't know until Jinshi told her what kind of official Lakan was. Not even Meimei (who actually loved him) did. The crazy thing is that none of the women in Verdigris House ever bothered to ask Lakan what his job was, probably because it's ingrained in their minds to maintain customer confidentiality. Plus, they got used to seeing him as the monocled weirdo villain who hurt one of their own (except Meimei, who knew the full story because she was Fengxian's servant girl). Lakan himself kept everything a secret outside of court. Only Luomen knew (because Lakan is his nephew) but nobody asked him either. Fengxian's whole tragedy stemmed from exactly this ignorance. The reason she thought she'd been abandoned was because she didn't know Lakan was a military officer who had to deploy away from the capital for years. To be fair, most people expected military officers to look like Lihaku and Basen (or Gaoshun), not a sneaky suspicious nerd. The Three Kingdoms trope of military strategists being geeks is a result of the writer of the novel being a Confucianist scholar promoting his biases. IRL most military strategists were more like Zhou Yu than Kong Ming. For that matter, the real-life Kong Ming also led troops from the front while riding a chariot in full armor.
That quick glimpse of maomao’s face after mentioning lakan’s name reminded me of that one scene in “the exorcist” where the face of the demon appeared…both gave me chills 😨
If memory serves in the story, Romeo and Juliet, Juliet was given medicine to make her appear to be dead for a while, and then she would wake back up. Maybe it’s something similar
Maomao isn't dumb. She knows the woman is her mom, she even remember her cutting off her pinky. Also, the women at the Verdigris house would not keep that secret from Maomao. Maomao is eccentric because she grew up at Verdigirs, drinking Pairin's milk as a baby. While the sisters love Maomao, they won't skip work for her and often left her alone. Once Maomao became old enough, she either needed to become a courtesan or leave. This is why she lives with Leoman, only courtesans and hired help may live in the building. Edit: Also, the story does an amazing job making you hate Lakan. The payoff later will be great.
Problem would be whether he would understand it or not. It's quite confusing the first time, because rather than story plot, it's more about individual emotions.
1:30 Typically, events of the traumatic variety are more likely to be remembered by babies. So, if you don't have any memories from early childhood, that's usually a good thing.
They changed the conversation between Jinshi and Lakan a little bit. In the manga, Lakan addressed Jinshi for exactly who he is. Then again, even anime watchers can guess who he is based on the incident with concubine Ah Duo a few episodes back.
Your theory on Surei is not too far off on things. The magnitude of things as you learn them later on will be insane. This season covers LN 1 and 2. The theory you have, it will be covered in season 2 since that should cover LN 3 and 4.
Look at it from her point of view, Her father, in order to reduce the cost of her Mother, got her pregnant. Considering she stayed at the Verdigris house, he then for some reason (i do not wish to spoil this for you) left his daughter at the house. This forced the now disvalued courtesan to take on clients low enough to eventually catch syphilis from one of them. Would you consider someone like that your rightfull father, no matter what reason he had to leave her there and not pay of the courtesan, it changes nothing on the fact that, that is exactly what he did. So for MaoMao, this is not her father, this is a disgusting man that misused her mother and brought her to the brink of sanity and health.
@@Sup_D Spoiler: No it is not, she does tell in the manga that the reason is that since she was young he daily visited the verdigris house in order to meet her, giving her the wrong vibes about the reason why he wanted it, and he was really insinstent even though he was told off... over time she learned to despise him based on the reactions of all the other ocupants of the verdigris house. in the light novel this is stated to be only part of the issue, the real problem is that she never forgave what he did to her mother. This revelation comes much later.
@@m3divh I have read the Manga, so i know. It's more to do that, when Lakan first appeared in front of Maomao (who was a child), he was quite bloody (because Madam had beaten him priorly) and was acting like a manic/madman. That scared the heck out of Maomao which also instilled a sense of disgust she has toward him. And he kept appearing like that infront of Maomao continuously regularly (aka., getting beaten by Madam to the point of being bloody and then laughing like a manic in-front of young Maomao, and it was this that desensitization her towards him).
This is only my deep thoughts: I think that Suirei is the Lakan's nephew (someone talk about Lakan has a nephew, so Suiren can be the nephew in disguise). Then Mao Mao and Suirei are cousins.
its weird that my hunch was correct on fact maomao is connected to royalty in some regard i guessed it since episode 3 so yea to find out that thats a mindscrew and a half.. but now i wonder on something else... if she actually had any connection to the first queen dowinger and if so... hmm would explain so much
Maomao is truly a cat, shes cute and loving but will turn into a lion if she's mad,idk why i feel theres more about her parents story and maomao dont know the full story maybe that's why she hates me i guess
Even if Lakan is a noble she is an illegitimate daughter born from a prostitute. She IS lowborn. I love this about her. She is involved in this weird noble world in multiple way but contrary to most series where she would be that pretty, naïve and gentle princess who would behave like one even if she doesn't know it, Mao Mao speak, act and think like a commoner at heart. She don't feel like a noble and she don't dream to be one. And that's this mindset that make her so unique in the court palace.
1:19 I mean, technically an Eunuch can still use his finger and his tongue... If an Eunuch still has a sex drive is a different matter.. But man, that MaoMao scene was really something... Also, I kind of doubt she knows that the sick lady is her mother base on how she spoke of that incident. I have more the feeling the others in the establishment are keeping it secret from her and told her some fabricated story. And the preview to the next episode was absolutely wild; ending with an ambiguous cliffhanger....
am putting out my theory, only a theory bc I haven't read the manga & i don't want to hear if i'm right/wrong, i don't want to be spoiled, but... Suirei really looks like Maomao to me: similar blue eyes & dark hair. What if they're half siblings? Suirei is Lakan's first daughter from whoever agreed to marry that freak (similar dark blue hair & eyes), and Maomao is his illegitamite daughter from that courtesan. Maybe Suirei knows/suspects that Lakan had an illegitamite child, knows/suspects it's Maomao & that's why she seems to dislike her.
Nope. Lakan has legally recognized Maomao as his daughter and she is thereby a noble, even if Maomao does not want to be associated with the creep. Later in the books, beyond the scope of this arc, Jinshi abuses Maomao's noble status to drag her along on a journey. I won't go into more detail to avoid spoilers.
If you wonder how much maomao hates lakan, remember she could have had an easy noble life if she accepted him as her dad. Yet she prefers to be a commoner and live with luomen
Not fucking kidding I knew it was coming but I didn't expect it to be fast and scary I felt my blood run cold. I'm being so frickin serious, only a couple of people where able to make me feel like that but never an anime character 😅 would I have thought would make me feel that again
I don't think the lady with syphilis is Maomao's mom. Between Maomao's dream and her saying she wants a medicine that will cause someone to come back to life more than anything, I think her mom tried to kill her and then killed herself, which would also explain why she hates Lakan
that lady is clearly mao's mom, how clear do u want it to be. she is a high level courtesan, lakan took her virginiy and she get pregnant with mao. she is reduced to nothing as what mao said in this episode because of that. her name is FengXian.
7:41 Suirei 翠苓 Colors like leaves of grass and trees +cerastium Suiren 水蓮 water lily It is easy to tell the difference in kanji, but it is difficult to tell the difference in English.😢 12:15 It was also mentioned in Romeo and Juliet, so perhaps surprisingly it is not a fantasy, but a realistic medicine in ancient times. 12:18 Tanya Senki would be the train!😂 12:46 morning glory? If that glare could kill, whole city would be dead. I am sorry to everyone hyping Frieren, solo leveling etc. but This is number 1 anime of this season.
I get how anime only people don't have a reason to do Ike Lakan, but PLEASE wait to judge him till the end of the season, he's nothing like you think he is
Trust me you do not want a too good memory. I have HSAM and it is really shit. First of all it is hardly of any use in my job, since I do not remember trivia and information, it has to do more with the ability to recall details after you take a certain distance from that moment (sleep it off so to say) and second sadly you do mostly remember the bad parts of your life in vivid detail, especially injuries. -> It makes me prone to depressions.
