In this video we discuss what I consider to be the best ferrocerium rod striker I have used, turning what would be considered marginal tinder into viable tinder. speedysharp.com/
Alone season 10 winner carried the speedy sharpe. I would have taken it as well, it does take off alot of metal when sharpenig blades but would work just fine.
Personally, I think a good striker is more important than a good ferro rod. I use a high speed steel striker and it's a game changer. I'm going to buy this Speedy Sharp and see if it's just as good. Great vid!
And oh BTW PULL THRU carbide V sharpeners SUCK. Just DONT. Get a DMT Trifold Diamond rat tail style sharpener and a round ceramic rod to carry in field. Great video!😁
Great recommendation. I carry a diamond sharpener in my kit, but it is not configured to strike a rod. Have just bought a speedy sharp. Old sharpeners will go in my car kits.
I remember seeing ads for these things as knife sharpeners and thinking it was just another garbage low effort tungsten knife sharpener. I just bought a ferro rod for the first time and after testing it out with the included tiny striker was thinking these might be good strikers for them. Ill have to reconsider the usefullness of these. Still think they are trash as far as a sharpener is concerned aside from like you said emergency situation but they definitely look like really good ferro rod strikers.
West Coast Warriors Archive. I think like any other tool you need to learn how to use it. I've just put a Shaving!! edge on Two knackered abused knives. Well impressed.
@@howardvarley8795 I figured they were crap since they are basically a one sided carbide sharpener and those are hot garbage. I may have to give mine a try and see how it compares to my sharpening stones.
Was impressed by your demonstration so thought 'Yeah, I'll have one of them' .. and then was shocked at the price (€50!!). Fortunately by diligent searching found a supplier at an acceptable cost and bit the bullet. Got it today and it does exactly what you say. Only reservation is how quickly will it go through a ferrorod? Silly concern actually if you really need a fire.
These things make great strikers but I’ve found they cause a lot of chattering on the ferro rod that really impacts the effectiveness of the rod have you found this and if so how did you mitigate it?
The key with the Speedy Sharp or Corona type shears sharpener is the amount of pressure you use. If you dig into your knife blades like you would most ferrocerium? Brother I'm telling you, its going to SCREW your knife up so bad you'll be chewing up railroad spikes and spitting out anvils, using language you wouldn't use in front of your mother😂😂If you know how to use different shaped stones and ceramic and diamond rods by HAND and EYE, you'll very easily figure out how to hone your tools with one. But a Ferro rod?? These things will make the hardest cheap EBAY Ferro talk. Be very careful with softer ferrocerium with a Speedy Sharp, use less oressure, more speed and run length, because if you don't its gonna eat that rod for lunch. They're great for scraping magnesium and making extremely fine fat wood shavings too! Saves the spine of my knives for when I really need it
