I have been asked many times ‘What is the best fish and chips in Cornwall’.. I have pondered over this, torturing myself through many a sleepless night. I have narrowed my favourites down to a shortlist of two. Here I visit Lewis Fish and Chips in Newlyn. It’s a stones throw from the famous working harbour in the village and quite simply phenomenal. The cost of fryers to run with current energy costs, I don't expect fish'n'chips for under a tenner now, so that seems the right price for what - even on camera - seems like the genuine article. You've made me hungry again, Wendall. I haven't got over the last pasty vid! God, I'm missing Cornwall.

Lewis's fry with industrially processed Palm oil. That stuff is oxidised and should come with a public health warning. That's just as bad as Warren's Pasty shop across the road using Margarine instead of Butter. Much better to go over to High Lanes in Hayle where they use Natural Beef Dripping. Tastier too.

Sorry but one criticism - any chippy that serves their food in a cardboard box gets a down score from me! I grew up in the Midlands which, even though being furthest from the sea, has the best chippys in the UK imho and they serve wrapped in newspaper. You get more and it’s the traditional way - not some crappy posh box with about 10chips inside lol

I lived about 100yds from High Lanes chippy back in the late 50s/early 60s. They were wonderful (and 3d a bag!) I revisited the chippy a year or so back- after a gap of 60 odd years- and they were still wonderful.

I find immense enjoyment from watching unsuspecting tourists being eyed up for dive bombing from local seagulls, eat your fish and chips inside, seagulls have learned long ago from us humans the best places to feast, keep on doing what you’re doing Wendall!

Great video buddy.. as always, I would hate to guess how much Rick Steins in padstow are charging now, we paid £17.50 for 1 fish n chips back in 2010, my local chippy was charging £4.50 at that time. Hi whendle you realy realy have to fo the meadery newlyn. Medieval restaurant you eat with your fingers. Food absolutely delicious the chicken in the rough is highest on menu. Waitresses dressed up to lovely staff. A must try 👌

I love beef dripping, so always seek out those chippies. I remember as a lad, we used to eat the chips on the way home on a cold night and the dripping would congeal inside our cheeks, couldn't bleddy chew, let alone clunk en!

Ahhh, I got really hungry watching this 😋 Especially when you let us hear the crunchy fish 😊 I rarely buy fish & chips as take-away. But I had something similar to this in the old pub Fountain Inn in Mevagissey on Monday. And I believe we paid less than £15 each. It is great to get a really good serving of crunchy and moist flaky beer battered cod, and chips and mashed peas and a tad of tartar sauce ❤ Thank you for the review! 👏🏻

I moved to Cornwall early 90's, maybe 92.... fishing family, so a lot of time in and around the harbour. Back in those days the chippy used to SHUT FOR LUNCH! 🤣🤣🤣. Come lunchtime, fish n' chips be great, but no the gaff was shut for a bit. Still makes me giggle some 30 or so years later.

I think you'll find the cod comes from the North Atlantic, not the local waters. Another great place for fish and chips is Greg & Lou's in Redruth.

I was hoping you would say Highlanes. I love their fish and chips, but Lewis's has some interesting choices you don't find elsewhere, John Dory, Skate Wings etc. It is funny how two of my favourites are also yours.

Get yourself to the West Coast of Cumbria, mainly Whitehaven! We have great Chippys and you can eat them whilst looking at some great views or while checking out our rich local history (John Paul Jones. Mining etc). We have a fantastic museum right on the harbour called the Beacon. I’d bet you any money that any fish n chips you got up here would smash that cardboard box enclosed excuse for “fish n chips” out of the water. Also, We get ours in PAPER😂. Cool vid, man🤟🏻

To be honest. It's not exactly croatia lol. By the adriactic sea, we've just come back of holiday and 123 euros for a meal and wine. We'll worth it. The English could learn alot about service etc. Well worth the 1300 euros we spent in a week! Love you croatia ❤

Had the best fnc in my life at waterfront bar in polzeath THIS VERY WEEKEND! Also had calamari to start (cos I’m cosmo) which was orgasmic. Check em out.

Do you really think that the cod comes from Cornwall? I’ve been working on beam trawlers for the past 20 years based in Brixham… the cod is from the the North Sea and is fillet iced and boxed at sea mainly from Scottish trawlers and Dutch .. it’s good quality but definitely not from Cornwall..

By the time you get bear the sea they will be cold and soggy with all that vinegar. Never have vinegar for that same reason, they go all soggy. That is a very small portion. In my local chippie you get twice as much as that and a bigger piece of fish for the same price.

I will let you in to a secret but don't tell anyone. If a chippy has " home made fishcakes " on the menu, walk away. It means they weigh each fillet and trim down bigger ones.

There is only one way to make good fish and chips and that is using LARD to cook it. They all use seed oils which are so bad for you after being used and reused. Most shops are now run by Muslim owners who would never use pig fat because of their religion. We had one shop in Dover which had the best food in the country but they closed him down because he used lard and the council said it was against health regulations to not use seed oils.
