I'd probably take out the Vibe or the Recon and add a Crescent, either the Lite Tackle or the Crew, but agree on the Sportsman 120 as the top in this category.

You could argue to trade the vibe for the crescent due to its paddling performance and because you can't get the vibe under 1500 anymore. But the Recon might be the best valued boat on the list.

Great job! I think your top 5 is pretty solid. I currently have a Bonafide RS117 and like it a lot. I just saw the Recon 120 in person and now it has me thinking about replacing my RS117 for it lol.

Yea I really like the boat and the concept of adding a pedal drive later if you decide you want one. I wish more companies would take that approach.

Great reviews...weighing options and appreciate the info about the boats you can add items to later (like pedal). QUESTION - majority of my use will be sound side of OBX North Carolina. Its certainly gets choppy/windy but can hide from the wind for sure. Also will take into ocean on calm days. Any of these boats you have on this list stand out for this application? Or are all viable?

I too fish the sound of OBX on our vacations every year. What I can tell you is I’ve had the Hobie Outback, Compass, the Old Town 106MK, Autopilot 120. From these boats I preferred the Old Towns they were more stable and dryer. With that being said many of the boats on this list have go a up in price. I’d definitely check out The Wilderness System Recon because you can add the pedal drive or one of the PDL options from old town thinking 106, 120, or the Salty. But the 106 Minn Kota is a dream and it gets more shallow than the PDLs, although it much more expensive.

Maybe do a little more research next time. The shearwater is $1499 plus $599 for the pedal pod

I know that, I did the research. You can buy it without the pedal drive and just paddle it. The Pedal drive is optional lol but it gives you a kayak that can grow with you from paddle to pedal to power.

My bad I rewatched it and I just misheard u. I thought u said pedal version for 1499. Nice video now that that's cleared up lol. I have been researching kayaks for months now and thought I made up my mind countless times amd I still don't know what to do. Budget is the main factor or else I would get my dream kayak a Hobie PA 360. I am considering a Recon 120 hd or a Native slayer propel max 12.5. I was gonna get the shearwater but I've read so many bad things about them. Basically you have to fix it and upgrade it as soon as you get it. Too many decisions!!!!!

No worries it happens. The Recon 120 and Slayer Max 12.5 are great option for bang for buck. I’d also take a look at the Lightning Strike HD and Old Towns PDL 120 both are under $2000.
