If you think there's something wrong with freecad, it's because you've never had to actually build any of the parts you designed. CNC and 3d printing is a very different world than manual fabrication. These programs might be more fun to design with, and they're fine for a machine that's going to perform ten thousand operations no matter what you do, but excessive complexity can get out of hand very quickly for any kind of hand work. Plus that kind of design process, without a lot of extra work, tends to introduce lots of stress risers and disproportionate cross sectional areas. Just look at the thing in the thing in the video. For a poorly designed part that will be made once on someone's 3d printer and will have extremely light service conditions? Maybe it's fine like it is. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it or that you can't create functional parts with it, but I don't see how the design process has any advantages in more common and practical applications.

Are you kidding me? A 7 year old video does a better job at introducing and teaching how to use the program than some of the newer videos - all in 10 minutes. GREAT JOB Hoffman Engineering. And thank you.

Even though you did this video 3 years ago it is still very timely. I just started trying DSM about two days ago and I am amazed at hows easy it is to make some complicated drawings. I use it for my 3D printer. I appreciate your video. I can see I am going to have to watch it several times with many pauses to pick up everything you covered. It appears there may be some changes in the program over the last three years but I think I can get around those. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

Oh man , I can’t agree more. I’ve done 10’s of designs using Design Spark Mechanical, most in under 30 mins, and then 3D printed them. I honestly thought there was something wrong with me because I like the program more than Fusion 360, and it’s much easier to master.

Compared to many other CAD programs, this one is not only very powerful tool, it is very intuitive to learn. What it lacks, is good video tutorials. Your presentation here has taught me features I did not know how to use till now. This program is based on the professional CAD by SpaceClaim, but cost about $10k for a license and $50 for a student license. Thank you so much.

I have been using the program for a little over a year, and I've been very impressed with it. So much so I ended up buying a seat of the full Spaceclaim to give me 3D export options (along with a few of the Spaceclaim tools) to fit in a workflow together with DesignSpark, as well as Inventor for parametric design and detailing. DesignSpark is also a very good STEP file viewer, and the measure tool is excellent as well. What makes it even better is the fact you can actually unlock STEP files with a little workaround, and make them fully editable within DesignSpark: - Open a STEP file (the import dialogue will warn that it will be read only) - Draw a rectangle anywhere in the model, and switch to 3D edit mode; the rectangle will become a surface. - Right click on the top level of the assembly in the structure tree, and you can now untick the 'lock' that was placed on the entire assembly. - The model is now unlocked and fully editable, you can delete the surface created earlier as it is no longer required.
@HoffmanEngineering
@HoffmanEngineering 9 лет назад
David van der Meer That is an amazing workaround! I was working with some STEP files recently, and had to jump into Solidworks to deal with them! I'll give that method a try next time!

@MaxHancock
@MaxHancock 2 года назад
@@ikrambouhouch6400 If you want to get a job as a 3D modeler at any major company, then I would learn Maya, since that's the standard. Smaller studios are switching to Blender, so it's a good one if you are starting out. I used Hexagon for the longest time, but switched to Blender, which is my main application for modeling now. I also use 3D-Coat and DAZ Studio quite a bit too!

The thing that really stole my heart (among other things) is the pull/push facility (among other things, obviously). Very similar to Sketchup's push/pull function but just on steroids here. Now you are not limited to flat faces only, you can add and "scrape" away to heart's content.

thanks for making this video. it helped in my decision to give this a try and recommending it to others. there really isn't anything for 3d modeling for printing that fills the void between tinkercad and solidworks/ad fusion 360 with respect to learning curves. this has the benefit of being free while retaining powerful features.

Wow....that is impressive! I've been using AutoCAD since version 2 and it has been a great 2D CAD....but never was a simple 3D program. I spent more time working around 3D problems than I did on a drawing. I gave up on it a few years ago when I would need to buy it again (~$4000) after not purchasing yearly updates for several years. I've been trying free SketchUp but there just aren't enough tools or drawing procedures available (like left crossing) to easily select or make objects. Thank you for this outstanding video!!! Crap! Be aware that this is actually a restricted version of a Spaceclaim commercial package. It won't export STEP files or any files with decent resolution so if you want to drive a CNC machine or export to other CAD packages you'll have to pay for the export module which isn't cheap (~$795). There are apparently some assembly features missing too. It's fine for hobbyists doing 3D printing using STL files though.
