I live in a small building of 10 rental apartments. Our landlord set aside a room where any of us can put items we want to give away, or items left by tenants who move out. I just got some fluffy bath towels, kitchenware and spare light bulbs. In the past, I’ve gotten table lamps, chairs, hand tools and storage bins. Since I don’t own a car, it’s easier for me to put items I no longer want in the community room rather than donate them to a thrift store.

My condominium also has a small area in the recycling room where people leave items they no longer want. I've picked up many amazingly useful things including vacuum attachments, potted plants, a Swiss Gear backpack, and a solid pine chest. I've also left things for others to take. It's like an informal freecycle group for the condo residents.

In our area, you’ll regularly see items set by the side of the road. They’re purposefully set there so someone can take them for free. It saves taking it to a thrift store.

My husband just built a raised garden bed for my herbs out of a free pallet. I wish I could share a picture, it came out so nicely! I have basil, sage, parsley, thyme, and rosemary in it . We planted potatoes, carrots, 3 types of squash, 2 types of onions, chives, broccoli, corn, cucumbers, peppers, lettuce, spinach, with lots of marigolds and German chamomile planted among them. Our strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are looking great. We went big this year.

Hope & Larry - I caught all but the first couple of minutes, and was struck while listening by how creative your subscribers/listeners are! My folks were Depression Era frugalists, but many families now have grown up in an assumed consumerist society with habits that are maybe more convenient but definitely wasteful. It's so nice to see people coming together to share a new wave of care for how we save and spend. My tip for this early June is to carry one or more large, soft-sided coolers in the car, and have a few freezer paks ready to go on grocery shopping days. That way, if going to more than one store is necessary, or the "right turns only" means the groceries are in the car while you hit the pet store or Lowe's, the food stays nice 'n cold. Wishing you both continued healing and strength.
@Joce123

@terryhenderson424
@terryhenderson424 Месяц назад
We are actually doing this. The cooler was supposed to be for taking our own food and drink for what was becoming an increasing number of mandatory trips per month out of our immediate area. We looked at Yeti then for other brands when the Walmart Lifetime coolers hit the shelf in 2022. When questioned about the scan price, the manager was less than solicitous to both he other half and newer associate saying the scan price was accurate. The other half immediately bought the two smallest sizes for a sum that was less than the price of the price tag on the smallest a couple of days later. They have been super and are truly a Yeti knock off. However they look in thier putty gray, weve been keeping our eye out on similar coolers since and prefer the lid latches on the LifeTime brand than any of the others. We are in a pickup truck and use them to both keep items cold but also dry for fewer items in the cab.

I buy plastic wrap (foodservice film), aluminum foil, parchment paper and other items from restaurant supply stores, or online at Amazon. One roll of 2000 feet can last for more than 5 years and it only costs about $25. Plus you can choose wider widths such as 18" and heavy-duty thickness whereas most of the grocery/discount store brands are only 12" wide and flimsy thickness.

I can't stop advising everyone to use reusable toilet 'paper'. I've been using it for years now. It goes in the wash with towels and sanitizer. Plus our now beloved happy po mobile bidet. We use too good to go regularly. We are vegan and often buy fruit and vegetable packs from various large supermarkets or small organic stores. We love that. We get several kilos of fruit and vegetables for €3.90. The packages are very popular. Kind regards from Belgium from a German fan.

I do the same with plastic covers from toilet paper packages. Have for years. I hadn't bought plastic garbage bags for decades, until I moved here and have to have them on the big outside trash cans. Otherwise, I still would not be buying them. You know, I'm in a no-spend year. Yet, today, I had to buy a new washing machine and a new phone and charger. I had the money to do it because of all my other not spending. Worked out just fine this time!

We do this on and off too. I leave the soil level about 1/2"-ish below the top and it helps with both some tuoemofmcut work we can have and slugs when put out. I like to put them standing up snugly in old metal baking pans about 2" deep when indoors; the pans work but are also easy to move the seedlings for hardening off and at planting time.

In Germany, I re-use these small plastic bags from the fruit and veggie section in discounters for my 2 cosmetic garbage bins in both bathrooms. I never buy extra cosmetic bags. Also, I would grab some extra paper bags from the bread and baking section to wrap my freezer bread first before I put it in a plastic bag (to keep the humidity and keep it fresh). Little bread paper bags are great to wrap your snacks when going outdoors. And they are free in the shop. At LIDL they have extra strong cardboard boxes in the veggie section and if I need some I just ask. These are excellent for food storage. Think about what you can grab for free in shops that THEY have already paid for. 😉

Too good to go is also available in the United Kingdom. It is an app where companies such as supermarkets, coffee houses, bakeries, etc. Place the items such as bread products, salad, fruit, and other household items in a bag up the end of the day when they can no longer be sold at the full Sarah price and you collect them from the store for between 3 lb and 3 lb50 often you will get up to 20 lb worth of goods, but most retailers will declare that they will give you a minimum of 10 lb worth of produce for this significantly reduced. Some places that I have often got them from include Tesco Sainsbury's, Morrisons Asda or supermarket outlets but also independent bakeries and Costa coffee. Hope this is helpful to all

"Running" is short for running around or running errands. Collecting tasks to do several in one trip is the only way to go. Saves time, gas, wear and tear (on me and the car). My trips have become a challenge scavenger hunt. Modern day hunting and gathering. How efficient (fast and frugal) can I be?! It can appear to be a complex process but over time I have honed the skills that are now second nature. Start by checking inventory (keep track of what you are looking for so you can pick it up before you actually run out), read the sale ads, make a list, choose a day and time that will be the least busy for traffic and shopping. Come up with an efficient route which focuses on right hand turns and when possible in the order of least perishable first (for food) plus price points in case I can't get what I need at the first choice stop. And remember, you're checking tasks off a list not 'shopping'. Don't doddle - get in, get out, gitter done! Save time, save money, save your sanity!

I watch Leave it to Beaver. In one episode it showed the boys emptying the trash from inside the house to the outside can. There were no bags at all. Then it showed the trash truck coming along to pick it up. The trash man placed the can on a lift on the back of the truck. It emptied the can into the truck, and then the trash man placed the can back by their garage. Yes, we would have to wash our cans more, but it still could be done that way. I however, use any old bag that fits. I also buy bags. If I was really struggling I would forgo the bags. I find it interesting to see how things used to be, and I love looking at how the homes looked then.

We travel on some industrial park roads where we rubber neck to see what is out for people to take (for free). Just this week there was a place with 2 wooden shipping crates. By the time we passed by on our return trip, the smaller foot print, taller one was still there; about 24"x45" floor and 30" high. We put it in the back of the truck, brought it home, placed with the nice side out, sifted last years compost pile in one area, and began to fill it with the only half composted stuff. Soon as it stops raining, we will be removing the florescent orang tag. This year we will be putting only certain types of weeds and grasses in it and using it as a compost holder. Over the summer we will be figuring out what to use for deer caging which is also free to cheap and aesthetically pleasing. Sometime in the spring well be figuring out what to add so that we can grow in it. We have gotten a number of free wood shipping crates over the years to use for ourselves and others as planters amd raised beds.

Our electrical provider here in Lawton Oklahoma has different rates depending on the time of day the rate increases about five times between the hours of 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. in the months of June through October. During those hours I do not wash or dry clothes or run a dishwasher or anything that uses a lot of electricity

I ride the bus so I have no gas bill for a vehicle except my motorized bicycle On my gas bike I think gas costs me no more than 10 bucks a month All my groceries meat and produce I buy on clearance or reduced to quick sale My cat and dog foods I try to get a quality dry and wet food for them and I also am able to find their food fairly often on clearance I buy clothes at the end of the season when they're reduced to clearance same as shoes. Most importantly I stay away from dollar tree and dollar general Those stores will break the bank

I use Too Good To Go a few times mainly for when I have a bread craving. I found a bakery 3 neighborhoods over that gives a ton of items for 4.32. My first time there I got 3 bagettes, 2 rounds, a few bagels, couple of small olive loafs and couple of other house breas. All of this was in a very large shopping bag that I repackaged taking out what I wanted and then began trying to give the rest away since it was way too much for me. I also tried a couple of pastry shops but none where as generous as Teranova Bakery here in the Bronx, NY. It all depends upon the participating stores and is a way to sample a couple of items in a store before paying full price. THre only drawback is that you can't pick what you want.

The flash food app is available in the United States also. But it depends on where you're located and if you have any stores that are participating. In my area, southeast Wisconsin, Meijer is the main store that participates. Worth checking out in your area as it continues to grow

Stores were suppose to start charging for the plastic, "single use", grocery tee shirt bags in 2020 and then that got held off due to the pandemic. We had been using them for an assortment of purposes including all of the kitchen and other garbage. We ended up collecting more than we thought in 2020 and still do use them for household garbage. They gather up then tie off smaller amounts of garbage which means the garbage goes outside quicker and sooner. If/ when our stockpile ends, we know others with stockpiles and also those who are still getting them from the stores.

I have to paint and add mouldings to my porch,,I am trying hard to empty my small freezer so I can move it out of the porch and of course defrost it too,,,I am using my left over renovation supplies ,paint and mouldings to finish my last room in my house . Plus if I am batch baking I make sure I fill up the oven or use the toaster oven ,,plus I also lately been using my small crockpot in my bedroom for moisture ,,it’s wattage is 65 compared to humidifier which average 1500 watts 😅😊 Yes Flashfood is in Canada I have not used it but a friend does ,she showed me the produce she got large box for $6 well worth the money 🤓 they sell more then produce,,

Flash Food originated in Canada. I don't use it, but I do make a beeline to the markdown produce rack before looking at the regular produce. The thrill I get finding a half price cauliflower or a 99cent pack of cremini mushrooms is similar to the thrill I get finding a pair of Lululemon yoga pants for $8 at the Thrift store. 😄

Hiya Hope and Larry, I love your videos, I've been watching then for about 18 months now and have found them to be both inspirational and informative. Just wanted to tell you we have "Too Good To Go" in the UK too. I get a bag from our local bakers every week for only £3.25 (about $4). They give you both savoury and sweet things, its such a bargain. Plus coffee shops and Aldi do bags too for around £4 (about $5). Thanks Guys :0)

I pay my car payment biweekly but when we bought our house 10 years ago, we went with a bank that did not offer biweekly payments because the interest rate was almost a full percentage point less than the bank that did offer biweekly payments. We figured out that for us, The lower interest rate trumped the biweekly payment. And we always pay extra toward principal anyway.
