I helped my friends with a three-day yard sale over Memorial Day….there’s nothing like seeing all the junk people have paid good money for that they’re selling at a yard sale for twenty-five cents to make one realize what you DON’T need. I’ve been on a semi-minimalist journey and this just affirmed for me why and how much I just can’t deal with the excessive consumerism we face every day.

I did a LARRY and HOPE THING TODAY. MY BISSELL floor cleaner died. No more steam. Well, having all new floors this means I need a mop or cleaner stylus. I did the unthinkable lol. Except for no steam I still have a mop, with 2 cleaner pads that are washable. So yes, I got the scissors and cut the cord. I now have a non steam manual BISSEL floor mop !!

About nine years or so ago, pregnant with my first child, I began considering whether being a bit of a prepper might be prudent. When covid hit, I knew I really needed to be prepared for my family’s sake. So we have enough food to get our family through six months, enough candles to light our darkness for about a year, etc. But now I find that I keep buying out of fear. And I really loath that “trigger”. This is where I really need help - when is enough, enough?

Consider redirecting your concerns to Managing your things. Write down everything you have and the quantities. Decide a quantity of each thing or type of thing that is "enough for months" (green), "enough for 2 weeks to 1 month" (amber), and "none or almost none" (red). Some things may have a tiny number for green (like spices) or a bigger number (like canned tomatoes). Set yourself a small budget each week to buy a few items. Focus on only buying Red pantry items with the small budget, then move them to the Green list. Also, show your list to your spouse and get him to help decide which red items you don't need and if things on the amber list are actually green. Whenever you get concerned that you need something, remind youself "its OK, its on the green list". Over time you can decide if there are things you never want to have in bulk again.

Just heard you equate poverty with a feeling of deprivation. In my life, I've lived with a lot and I've lived with a little... financially speaking. Now, I have very little. Recently, Jane, of the Frugal Queen in France channel, pointed out that it sounds like I live in poverty. I'd never thought of that, but as I thought of it, I had to agree; I do live in poverty now. But that REALLY surprised me!!! I thought of it as just living within my means... and relying on God for all the rest. I didn't feel deprived at all, and still don't. I know I'll have what I need. Period. I don't know exactly how or when I'll have what I need, but I'm sure it'll come when necessary. I've lived for decades and decades content with what I have, and doing the best I can to use what I have the most just judicious way. I haven't always managed to do that very well. I make mistakes, but use those as learning opportunities. I recently made a HUGE and EXPENSIVE mistake in trying to fix a broken washing machine. Since I'd made the decision to try to fix it, and had put money toward that, it was hard to know when to keep putting more and more money into the repair (because I'd have a basically "new" washer), and when to give it up, accept the loss and go buy a new washer. I missed that cut-off point by miles!! It surprised me that I did, because I normally make better decisions than that. I was so focused on saving money by repairing that thing that I spent WAY too much money on it. Trying to save money led me to overspend drastically. I don't know when I lost my frugal spidey senses! Sorry, I got off track. I just wanted to say that poverty doesn't always make one feel depeived. This washing machine fiasco is just such a sore spot right now...!!
@UndertheMedian
@UndertheMedian 2 месяца назад
So sorry about the washing machine. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, DIY does not work out. What I said in the video is living with a "spirit of poverty" not living in poverty. Doesn't have so much to do with how much you make. It's more an attitude. We had a friend who was a young widow. She raised her children with very little income. Yet, she lived within her means, kept a neat and tidy home, expressed gratitude for what she did have, and had a spirit of joy and abundance. That is the opposite of a "spirit of poverty" - not matter how much you make.

I have a framed cross stitch piece a friend gave in 1995. It has an outline of a barn and silo with gently sloped hills and the saying “He who lives with little, possesses everything.” It is one of my favorites and your positive remarks/attitude reminded me of it. Thank you for sharing. oops - lol, I realized I left outthe best part of that quote - it is actually "He who lives content with little, possesses everything." -- Now, that makes a difference! 😀

I know what you mean, living "officially poor" by statistic income in Germany. Phil 4:11-13: "Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Blessings your way! 🙏❤️

I was so nervoud before surgery to be prepaired and almost bought a "cheep" recliner. It 2 phonecalls to an NGO for the disabled to find out they will lend me a recliner for as long as I need, only payment is for the shipment! The NGO is based on donations. If I only need the item for several weeks, and don't need to clutter my home. Always worth wnile to ckeck local espeacially in the field of support for ill or diaabled people. In Israel these NGO's are usually jewish religious organiztions- that help all, no matter if you are of faith or muslim etc. I am on the recliner right now. Also Miele vacuum part broke $320, vacuum was $1K in 2009 (bought for HEPA filters as asthmatic). $225 for repair but bought $135 used one on eBay as I don't know longevity of vacuum or future ownership. So, saving so many hundreds with some research & effort.

I managed yesterday to talk myself out of a beautiful, large gas grill. (the goats destroyed the last one). Instead I bought the large, heavy plastic wagon that will let me clean out my barn and chicken coop, put the "droppings" into the wagon directly, take it to the raised gardens and dump it where I need it. Same price but the wagon will get used much more often! I love steak, but it isn't in the budget as often as cleaning the animal quarters! 😂

Absolutely freaking out about money rn... huge 30+ feet 200yr old tree fell on our street... our city said it was our problem even though it was on their easement and fell into their street. 🤑 we decided to remove it ourselves it's costing almost as much as our estimates for removal... Now finding out said tree smashed a sewer line under the street... again city doesn't care and it's our problem... we have savings for such accounts but estimates today are $20,000 to $55,000 we don't even owe that much on our house 😢 waiting to hear from insurance and praying we are covered... bc if not we're already broke... have a large family only have maybe half that in savings & don't really want to waste it all in case of other emergencies 😵‍💫😭 Any suggestions? See if a local lumber company would want the wood or even a group of wood carvers. For the small stuff, see if you can rent or borrow a chipper/mulcher and either give the chips away (maybe for a small donation) or see if homeowners would like to buy it. You won't get all the money back, but it might help some. Neighbors may have fireplaces and wood would be useful. I'm trying to find ways to afford to clear the woods on 6 acres of my land.

You might want to consider going to the city council with documents proving that you don't own the easement or the tree. There may be an administrator who is denying help because the tree removal and sewer repair would blow their budget. Go to the mayor if you have to. If it's an election year, they might be more willing to help to avoid bad publicity. They probably have no idea that this problem is being pushed on to a constituent when it shouldn't be. Also consider consulting a lawyer. Or at the very least check city bylaws to make sure they are actually following them and not lying to you.
