I do like that a lot of companies are starting to add USB-C ports to the battery itself for charging. Just a huge convenience all around. And I do like the added GPS functionality of that radio. I don't have that in any of my GMRS radios, which is becoming a bit of a collection since I got the license. Lol.

With the USB-c on the battery itself, I've seen alot of complaints about it but I actually like it alot, say you have 1 or more batteries, you can charge it while using another, doesn't have to be on the radio to charge.

Great radio. Planning to buy another for my son. The compass calibration was frustrating at first, but easy after you get it right once. While in calibration mode an infinity symbol / number "8" will appear in the center of the compass. Hold HT at arms length, perpendicular to your arm, and trace a figure-8 pattern where the antenna traces the path and the radio body follows along. This takes me ~5 seconds every time.

@temporarilyoffline
@temporarilyoffline 11 месяцев назад
Welcome @WildFlowerBlessings ! GMRS works because you only need once license for your whole family to share on as many radios as you buy - you won't need to convince anybody else to get a license. There are a world of friends out there on either service (HAM/GMRS). Since the GMRS license is just a one time family fee - get that license, get 2+ radios and talk to your family members. That will help you gain confidence over that baofeng too. What area are you in? There might be somebody in our group that would be happy to make a radio contact with you to get over that mic fright.

We need a letter writing campaign to petition the FCC to give GMRS an extra channel designated for data. Therefore dual band radios could send their digital location and text information without disturbing the rest of the world with their beeps and squeaks. This particular radio is using the APRS protocol for data. If they assigned a UHF APRS frequency we could send SMS text messages back home from our camping trip informing the family that we are safe.

Hey Terry - good question. I'd first take a look around your area on repeaterbook.com (ham) or mygmrs.com/ (gmrs) and see what is active - is it GMRS or is it Ham? If its Ham, then see if its (DMR, D-Star, Fusion or just 2m FM) - once you get that squared away then I'd be looking to spend that medium money you're talking about - That's a lot to unpack, so another way would be to grab some friends and pick one based on what activities you do. GMRS is easier to get into, Ham has more features in the long run.
