Great video, well done, no waffle just a skilled man with his dog getting on with the job with economy of effort. The best advert i've seen for this axe which is a joy to use for general purpose woodland work. Punches above its weight but light to carry too.

Every axe is constructed for certain tasks. The GB Scandi was specifically designed for softwood pine forests. To be doing the work and the kind of trees he's doing in the video you'd definitely want something bigger and different like an American felling axe. (Though the capability of the Scandi is clearly shown) All that said, I have a GB Scandi and love it. It really is a quality axe and capable of larger work and hardwoods no problems. I've split larger hardwood rounds with it that I initially thought it wouldn't be able to handle. Only con is the handle is a bit on the thicker side. But if you're going out into the woods to do this kind of thing you want something different for sure. The Scandi makes a great pack axe where you have enough axe to do larger work but don't want to be lugging around a full sized felling axe. 99.9% of people will never be doing or have to be doing what this guy does in this video their entire lives. I'm an avid outdoorsman, camper, hunter, and bushcrafter....I'm not a lumberjack or aborist...😉 And I'd suspect most others aren't either. The GB Scandi is plenty of axe for your average person....though definitely overpriced these days.
@NatureBetsLast
@NatureBetsLast 2 года назад
@@pennsyltuckyreb9800 best description of this scandinavian thus far. If I'm walking into the woods for some part time fun with a pack on my back, this is the ax I want. Hell if I'm hiding in the apocalypse this is probably the ax I have. If I have a homestead. This ax will also be with me but next to a few others.

@@damienvanhalen Just that council tool axes come with some of the best stock handles. They hardly need any thinning done to them, if at all. While other axed may be better, their handles come super thick like clubs, which need a lot of rasping and and fine tuning to be comfortable. Especially if you plan on working with them for hours at a time. Council tool just makes great axes for affordable prices. I wouldn't call them cheap, but they are inexpensive.

Did you thin the handle on this? I know they do come quite thick don't they. I thinned mine a bit, but it could still do with a bit more. They're still usable out of the box and a lot better than the hultafors or Husqvarna axes , but you still need to put a good hour or two in before they're up to scratch. I've got my Husqvarna dialled in lovely now though, nice slim handles make all the difference.
@elemental4rce

Yea thinned out the grind and the grind on the head a bit. Approximately 18° in this video. Sold the axe shortly after this. Too light and too narrow for my liking.

@RhysTucker2603 Год назад
@@elemental4rce after I wrote this comment I thinned the handle down even more to my liking. Mine is not too bad, pretty decent profile. I sold one that was really thin and a strange concave shape. The one I have now seems like it has a nice little profile. Luck of the draw I think.

Provided you dont hit any rocks or chip the edge on a super hard knot, it would most likely still be reasonably sharp afterwards. GBA steel is pretty hard and holds an edge relatively decently.
