Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian Forest Axe Review - Bushcraft Axe Field Test - Woodshed Wednesday!
I've had this axe for five years & used it quite a bit. Here is a bushcraft field test review, with just about everything I know about this very popular axe from Gransfors Bruk.

Thank you for a well made review of the scandinavian forest axe! I have one scandinavian forest axe myself, made by Lennart Pettersson. I bought my axe for 21 years ago. From Tobias Thelin I have a splitting maul, and I must say it is impressive how good quality it is. Once a late autumn night I happened to forgot the scandinavian forest axe, it was a winter season under the snow. The year after I went looking for it, it was hidden under some fir branches. To my surprise it only had some powder rust on some small parts, besides that it was like new. I was so impressed that the axe handle hadn't start its process to become decomposed, actually, it was like I have forgotten it yesterday. Even the leather protection was intact. I agree with you, this type of axes are better than a Rolex wrist watch, at least some of them are. I live in Sweden, so I have bought quite many of Gränsfors bruks axes as well. 🇸🇪

Pete H. it sound nice to have Gransfors Bruk for a neighbor. It so nice the way they have passed down this craftsmanship to a new generation of smiths. I have never lost an axe in the woods, but one time I shot a buck deer, and left my rifle up in the mountains. I didn't notice until the end of the trip! Thanks for getting in touch. See you on the next trail!

"Don't try this at home..." That shaving sequence was good for a belly laugh. Probably some great screen shot opportunities there for the ultimate avatar (16:09). Great stuff. I'm really enjoying the Woodshed Wednesdays!

I admire your discipline. Most videos I see have people trying to make their fortune on RU-vid swinging wildly, and directly at their legs. I'm humbled sir.

Looks to be a really great, quality axe. She'll take a good edge alright...shaving! Nice review and a fun video.

Wow!! You are the man Kevin. That was about as much fun as a RU-vid video can be. My favorite line was “now I know why a lot of those woodsmen were bearded.” lol What an amazing anniversary gift and kudos to your wife on getting you the best gift of all in my opinion. I’d like to ask your opinion on splitting axes. I have a small stove in my shop I use daily in the winter. I cut my firewood around 14-16 inches in length and normally the diameter is around 10-14 inches. In this situation, what would you recommend for splitting? Thanks so much for sharing my friend. Your videos are great and just keep getting better.

hahaha Howdy Shane! You need a house axe. I would be happy to cover this topic next Wednesday. However, right now Bailey's online has 18" Council Tool Hudson Bay Axes on sale for $39.99. Excellent value for a 2 lb axe. I use the long handle version, but the hickory catches on your legs when you walk by the chopping block. This head design does a good job for splitting firewood into smaller sizes. I sanded the black paint of mine, and it has developed a nice patina.

@@WestForkWoodsman I’d like to hear you talk about it next Wednesday if it’s not too much trouble. I’ll check it out right now at Baileys and I really appreciate it!

Shane, if you really want to splurge... Gransfors Bruk makes a splitting hatchet that is a real dandy. I'm almost tempted to thin my herd and buy one! 😁

@@WestForkWoodsman you got a point there. I could stand to part with a few things myself and you only go around once right? Got my candle order yesterday and everything was just excellent! My girlfriend just loves them and I put aside a couple for bowstring waxing so everybody is happy! Thanks Kevin

I have the Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian Forest Axe and Small Forest Axe, one day I'd like to the Gransfors Bruk American Felling Axe to complete my collection. I also have the Aqua Quest Safari 10x10 camo tarp, and you sir, have great taste in gear. If you don't mind me asking, what's your go to belt knife. At the moment I'm testing the Mora Carbon Garberg, but one day I'd like to get a custom bushcraft knife in the woodlore style. Congratulations on the anniversary and the gift. Take care man.
@WestForkWoodsman
@WestForkWoodsman 2 года назад
Thanks so much Joey. I love my aqua quest tarp. I change knives all the time, but have really gone back to plain old carbon steel lately. Cleaned up an old Goodell butcher knife which in 1095 steel. My all time favorite steel. Razor edge in minutes, and holds it good. I have a few mora's, but don't overlook Old Hickory 1095 5.5" hunting knives. $25 with sheath is a steal. A sharp knife is a good knife IMHO. Happy trails, my friend.

I should've watched the whole thing before commenting, your inane (yes, inane) ramblings while "shaving" gave me a belly laugh too. Brewing a tea afterwards, sounds good (really good) to me. You should try some black rifle coffee company chainsaw, it's really good too.
