My jaw about hit the floor when I first saw Cal's ingenious frankenstein guitar that makes this possible, that's some serious 200 IQ shit. I followed this project closely and I'm so damn happy that he was able to pull it off, it's a well-deserved accolade.
@@rastas_4221 that would be modded software though. Modding the guitar is literally the only way that this song can be FCed on NTSC on unmodded software.
@@patstaysuckafreeboss8006 damn you didn't listen what the video said. It's impossible bro without slight modification and he confused the system to think it's a xbox360 controller, and you still think it's cheating. That's like me plugged in my mouse and keyboard to my Xbox so I can can play PC games like wtf are you trying to say
2:47 Clarification: Some parts of Japan use NTSC, namely the western half, while others use PAL, but software was generally developed under NTSC, and standardization started to switch to 60Hz around the time PAL60 became a thing: which was coincidentally during the PlayStation 2 era since hardware was no longer just raw-downclocked for 50Hz rendering.
@@zavtparticles6828 That's because first instalations were done by two separate firms: in 1895 German AEG (50 Hz) started in Tokyo, year later - American GE (60 Hz) started in Osaka. Later their systems were developed and finally, when it become nationalwide - costs of changing it were far too big. And decades later tsunami hitted in Fukushima nuclear power plant, as a result of wave almost half of Japan lost their power and second half couldn't help them but that's another story...
This is just crazy. How the hell do you come up with something like that? The GH community must be really dedicated to create this Frankenstein monstrosity for the sole purpose of getting an FC on a single song.
Absolutely genius to basically force "gamepad mode" with a non-guitar pcb/chip or whatever, but make the strum bar trigger the fret presses. I'm honestly blown away.
ngl i clicked on this video only anticipating to watch the first 2 minutes because i have stuff to do right now but the pacing, editing, and story telling of the video kept me engaged the ENTIRE time (whoops). what an absolute banger video 11/10
I remember back in the day arguing with LocalH and Fyighfreak on whether Obsidian was possible to FC, and Scott said himself "The only FC that is truly impossible is Trogdor on NTSC." this is definitely one of those accomplishments where along with being an iconic fc, it's a "mystery solved" type situation with how an fc like this could happen.
Amazing. I remember the debate on the Scorehero forums like, almost fifteen years ago, about the possibility of this. One question that remains: why exactly is that condition in the code about the guitar controllers implying a strum limit? What purpose does that serve?
There is no definite answer because Harmonix quite literally denied the existence of the strum limit and pretty much told people to get better at the game and stop coping (there's an interview somewhere on youtube, it's pretty hilarious in retrospect). Many believe it was implemented in the early phase where the controllers used for testing might not have been very reliable. It would effectively prevent overstrums on bad hardware. It's just a theory but it seems the most viable.
Did the strum bars on early hardware have Schmitt triggers or debouncing capacitors? If not, it would make sense to have a strum limit like that. Instead of retooling the hardware, retool the software.
Back in the day we used to take non dualshock ps1 controllers and modify them into broken guitars because the up and down could be used as strum. Literally never once thought it was a beneficial thing other than just being able to play the game. As a 14 year old I didn't have money for guitars, so if a guitar died, I did whatever it took to play. It's wild to see all these years later there's a real reason to use it
This is insane. I hadn't heard that this FC happened, but I was around the GH community back in the day and knew that it was labeled as impossible. Absolutely nuts to know that it actually got taken down.
I know this video is two years old at this point, but sometimes I think about this and wish rock band 1 had controller support for guitar so some psychopath could try and do Green Grass and High Tides NTCS like this
God, GH2 was the best. I remember when it was gradually discovered that this was impossible on NTSC. So frustrating. So many of the top players like Lo7 or HellAshes had 63/64 FCs due to this song (I THINK that Lo7 got Beast and the Harlot, but don’t quote me on that).
@@SanicStudios Think he meant spamming solo buttons along with strumming normaly [so id ugess holding top fret, strumming, and spamming solo buttons tho i only see a 3 armed person doing that]
@@SanicStudios If you didn't know on the Strat guitars from rockband, the small row of frets are called "solo frets" and those work the same as a controller during solo sections (you only need to tap them)
This is interesting, in my case I wanted to add an autostrum button to my ps2 controller just for fun but I didn't know how to, and I guess he would know how.
If you play clone hero, there is a setting called gamepad mode (same menu as note speed) which is essentially this (though I believe it behaves like GH3 and not GH2, there are differences in what can and cannot be done between the two).
6:26 I'm one of the idiots who wasted hours on this solo. got to around the last note of the "human limit" zone on NTSC twice in MANY hours of attempts. At the time, I couldn't understand why this solo was so hard.
My first guitar hero was 2, and in my opinion Guitar hero 2 is the greatest guitar hero game ever made. I own every main title guitar hero game from GH1 all the way up to WOR and everything between, while GH3 is considered the best and have improved from gh2 greatly. I would still say that gh2 is my personal favorite since the songs are way better and hitting notes were a bit more satisfying.
