Marillion is the most underrated band in music buisness. The sound is amazing. It goes to the brain and to 100% to the heart. No other band can touch me like this band. That was in 1984 in the fish era and especially in the hogarth era. Marillion is number one. I am now 55 years old and no other band is on that high musical level, for such a long time. Cheers.
Hey. Same feeling. Sometimes I volontary don't listen to them, to stay in a superficial state of mind for my day. Because when I hear them, my mind goes so far, too far in emotion.....
Brilliant guitarist. Incredible feel to his playing. Gilmore once said it's not always about the notes you play, sometimes it's about the space you leave. Steve gets it.
Always listened to Steve Rothery, Dave Gilmour and Steve Hackett. All masters of their instruments and all legends. Rothery plays with awesome control, never in a hurry and so, so accurate and clean. You can feel the passion that he puts into each note. Total Brilliance!! Thanks for putting this video together.
Went to see him and his band last night at Cambridge Junction. Amazing!!! His tone, feel and liquidity of playing still blow me away. And such a nice bloke - he hung around after the gig and spoke to everyone who wanted to meet him. One of the most underrated guitarists!
Listened with tears in my eyes, so beautiful. Brings back many memories. Thanks for this great selection. Steve Rothery is truly one of the most inspiering guitarists in the prog rock scene.

Steve Rothery, what a legend. The sound he has created is amazing, but the best thing about it is that imho it is totally unique. He doesn't race around the fingerboard, but can if he wants to. He controls and feels every note he plays and the rests in between are just as important. I have tried to play some of the solos and even if I eventually get the notes I can never nail the timing or sound.
Come on guys! No angry comments! You came here to listen to the wonderful Steve Rothery play fantastic solos, not to criticize and bitch at each other! Calm down, and listen to the music. Thank you. :)
Gig man wrote: "For me, Rothery is the greatest guitar player that's ever lived. Why? Because no one else plays with the same feel and emotion. Most guitar players believe shredding and shoving more notes into a bar is cool and musical... It isn't." Agreed 99 %; the other 1% is: with the exception of David Gilmour.
I'm with you on that one, Andy Latimer, Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, Paul Kossoff, Malcolm Jones and Snowy White, all have that amazing talent of not overplaying and yet somehow in the end seem to get more out.
it is the solo from " three boats from the candy", a song which was played very rarely by Marillion before and after 1989... The song is really worth listening...One of the most shorter ever played by Marillion. Phil, a Marillion fan since 1983
Absolutely bloody awesome, every one. Makes me want to weep. Nothing moves me like Rothery. This is music at it's best. Thanks for this compilation, love it.
Steve's Guitar Solos are a great finalpart of each Marillion Songs . My favorite is from "Grendel" . Marillion has endet for me 1988 . The Fish-Era is the time of my life.
Thanks for putting this together. I am not sure that Steve would appreciate that only one piece of his work between 1987 and 2011 makes your top ten ! We loved the fish days as well, but his playing style and dexterity have developed massively since then.
No one plays so emotionally.... I could always cry! And I loved him with Fish and love him with Hogarth and with his solo projects. He is an outstanding musician and every gig goes directly into the heart
Ranking of artists always make me smile.I don't know who's the best but Rothery has some magic in his hands and the gift to easily recognize his touch . He's a superb guitarist who gave me huge emotions with his music. For me it's enough
Mine too - in fact it is probably that solo, which I first heard at a boyfriend's house on Real to Reel that made me fall in Love with Marillion back in 84 as a young 14 year old. It's sublime.
Thank you for this! Rothery i.m.h.o. is the ultimate guitar player. When he touches the strings, it feels like angels are cradling my heart and I just wanna cry. No one ever has gotten his timing and feeling for the melody and the intuition of where to start and where to end. I know and also have jammed with very gifted guitarists, but they always end up showing off their skills, endlessly fiddling about with their strings, trying (willingly or being just naive and ignorant) to outshine the rest of the band instead of casting all members into a perfect musical sculpture of art - and the latter is exactly what Rothery does. He's a hero! Rothery is the perfect embodiment of the phrase "less is more"...
without rothery there would be no marillion.. the solos of this man is genius.. so simple in his ways, no ego just total class, and can wipe the floor over anyone.. i play myself and he truly is an inspiration...
Brilliant..absolutely brilliant.Listened to Marillion a lot back in the days of Fish.Still do and yes he is a great guitarists. Some of them riffs grip you and draw you in.Listen to Jigsaw..fantastic solo by Rothery.
Just plain awesome! Saw them in concert 3 times in Grand Rapids Michigan, Clutching at Straws, Seasons End, and Holidays in Eden. Love to watch him play, he is just so in tune with the feeling and translates it with his guitar! Lovely man!
This guy just embarrasses me... He makes a grown, reasonably well balanced, reasonably intelligent man want to cry. I really cannot think of any other guitarist who can draw out such emotion from an instrument like Mr. Rothery can. Amazing. Heart wrenching. Gut twisting. Sublime. Incredible. And embarrassing!!
Listening to this just makes me want to dig out those old albums 😌😌😌 Incubus is tops with Fish's vocals, and Jigsaw just took me away when I was 19 (still does 👂💛)
Every great solo has a solid bass at the back of it!! Steve Rothery is, for me, the greatest ever guitarist.. how wonderful is it he has Pete to back him up!! Love Marillion
ascolti per caso un loro brano e rimani catturato nella fantastica spirale musicale che solo Steve e' capace di creare.25 anni di marillion e non ti basta mai! The best...
Great list, nice to see them back to back. You can really notice the ferociousness that Rothery uses on the solos and the way he utilizes bending of the strings. Definitely colors the songs with his brush and palette.
Awesome guitarist and very humble man it does not matter what is number one it is an appreciation of the artist itself, thank you for posting your top ten
I love Steve's guitar playing. He's in the mold of that band like Brian May is in Queen. Even if you lose a very strong singer you can continue because you have an even stronger guitar sound no matter what
this mans guitar style conjures up feeling and emotions, that guitar sounds like its talking to me, especially on assasing. excellent, no one else quite like him.
