I review the very rare and very special 2019 Subaru WRX STI S209. A nice bump in horsepower to 341 hp along with other track-focused improvements combine for a nice change over a regular STI, but the real magic comes from the wider fenders and tires that turns the S209 into the best handling car I've reviewed all year. But with only 209 being made and a price of $64,880 these improvements will sadly only get to be enjoyed by the few that are willing to pay 65k for a WRX. What do you think of the S209 and its price?

Man I love the 209s. The HKS turbo, wider fenders, perfect wheels and carbon roof make it unreal. However I can't fathom paying 4k more for a S209 than I did my 2019 gt350. So cool tho

I have a 2016 STI and I paid 40k with all the addons such as NAV, lip kit, exhaust. I understand people desire rarity in the car world but to spend 25-40k over a stock sticker STI for 35hp and some aerodynamic parts is insane. You could pretty much build your dream STI for that additional money. You could have a reliable 500-600hp, build the wildest audio system, have 2-4 sets of wheels, some great coilovers or a bagd setup, and all of the roof rack accesories you could want. All of that on a New STI thats not the S209 or spend all that money on the rarity. I saw a s209 sell for 74k recently. Crazy! Good review though, its been awhile since I heard subaruwrxfan!

Unpopular opinion here but, honestly the sti looks generic. Like most 4 dr cars I dont understand the pricetag on a 300hp car that has awd. I see sti's going for 40k+ and I just dont see how anyone would pay 40k for it when you can go to other cars (audi s4, camaro ss, 5.0, shit even a civic type r, focus RS, q50s, 370z base or even nismo, bmw 5 series, 3 series, a used m3, etc etc...) I'd take any of those cars over this sti. Especially with the head gasket issues, yeah I'm good. Lol

Yes. It is really cool, but this should be the standard STI and special editions should be even more high performance. It's probably why Subaru changed their mind and didn't name it the 25B.

I own a 2006 STI with a intercooler water sprayer and I can say that the sprayer does make a huge difference in power on those hot summer days even for daily driving. You can feel the engine not work as hard to make boost after the intercooler cools off, I also have a 3" exhaust, suspension upgrades, and a cobb intake so it makes the power more noticeable.

Its got everything someone would upgrade for track use, and more. Its got upgrades to power, wheels and tires, brakes, subframe reinforcement, suspension, plus canards, widebody and wing. Plus all that with OEM quality . Its expensive but real track cars arent cheap

70k is expensive but the kicker is.. it's value will still be 70k 10 yrs from now because it's "exclusive"... to a real car enthusiast the feeling of being involved and in control of your vehicle is priceless...

If Subaru is only Making 209 of those then I do see the sense in making the price high unlike the civic Type R and the Toyota Supra which are both being mass produced and will probably be around 50,000 cars when production is done 65k is a lot but at least you might get some of it back when you want to sell unlike the two I mentioned

A $50,000 Camaro SS 1LE will destroy that $65,000 STi around a road course. That's just a fact. I've owned 2 Subaru STis (modified them and raced them) so I know what I'm talking about. I love Subies, but $65K is a ridiculous price for the performance it offers. If you want a road/track car, there are so many cars in that price range that are sooooo much faster. A new model STi making 350-375 hp should cost around $40 - 45K (fully optioned). A new model WRX making around 300 -310 hp should cost around $30 -35K (fully optioned).

If you want to pay that kind of money, buy base, take out 25k on that loan you could literally blow it out of the water. Just RPF1s and pilot sport 4S's would be a big improvement.

I like Subaru but just am not feeling this car at all. It looks tacky and the price is insane. I just paid $48K and change for a 2018 GT350 with Recaro seats and electronics pack and the car only had 1400 miles. I was looking at new Grand Sports that cost less than this STI and barely used Z06’s cost less. I just don’t see these cars holding their value.

@@BobThe9534 not with 4 inches of ground clearnce it cant. i owned an sti for years and the last thing i'd want to do is offroad it. it would get destroyed in short order. you have a really weird imagination of what a stock sti can do. offroading isn't one of them. its so low you need special low clearance ramps just to change the fucking oil without tearing the front bumper off.

Oh they will for sure hold their value because only 209 of them are being made. Normal wrx/stis hold their value like crazy and Subaru practically mass produces those. But yes there are definitely better performance car bargains, this is overpriced for what you get performance and amenities wise, but it is a good collector car and will definitely hold value or appreciate.

@@randomsubscriber52 No, they don't hold their value like crazy. I don't know why people perpetuate this myth. It simply isn't true. WRX and STI frequently lose value WORSE than other cars because people expect them to be thoroughly and completely thrashed and abused.

Would love a comparison of the S209 and the Type R. What are your thoughts between the two?

S209 is a better off-roader but Type R is faster

I compare them a little towards the end. The Type R comes close to the handling of the S209, but it's not quite as good in my opinion. The STI also feels a little faster too. The Type R has the more comfortable ride, better seats and more practical hatch though. And likely a more reliable engine than the Subaru too.
