My biggest reason for avoiding animals products and animals fats have more to do with ethical and environmental reasons, more than health reasons. I mean it’s a little different when you’re able to be self sufficient, but for most of us animals products would come from huge factory farms that are killing the planet and causing so much suffering

About the fuzz on the chicken , my grandma would put the chicken after de feathering it over open fire . So the fire would burn the little fuzz . Then wash the chicken and continue . This procedure would not chqnge the taste of the chicken as the whole operation would be done very quick and the chicken would not be exposed to the fire very closely . I hope you find this helpfull and try this metod

@@brendanmorin9935 I am sorry to have to inform you that all the industrial food is causing animal suffering and death. So if one avoids eating animals one only deprive ones body of much needed nutrients without helping any animals at all. There are absolutely no health reasons to avoid animal foods. Brilliant instagram account that shines light on the hypocricy of veganism: instagram.com/carnivoreisvegan/ But you are right in that the whole food production needs to change for everyones sake!
@WildWhispr
@WildWhispr 3 года назад
@@Talasbuan All industrial food production does cause harm, yes, but we need to eat something. This is absolutely not an excuse for supporting the industrial agriculture industry as this causes many many many times the suffering, environmental damage and death than growing plants, even industrially. Tha land used to support the animals (including to grow their food) is many times more than would be needed to supply the same amount of plant based calories, meaning eating dead animals contributes to many times more the habitat destruction, carbon footprint etc. Also, that article you cited does not even prove we need animal fats; we don't. The article itself actually admits we can get the so-called "missing" nutrients from plant sources (algae), the title is pure clickbait.

We made a similar soup with wild squirrel and wild grouse. Cook it for a day on the wood stove. Then separate the meat from the bones, and add onions, potatoes, carrots, celery, and a few herbs like Thyme and Basil. We eat some every morning, until the soup is gone. We also add cheese to our soup! Never tried Peanut Butter though. :) Great video.

I used to make this all the time back when I was living on a farm. We always had excess roosters. For those that do not know, roosters tend to not eat as much as the hens because they take care of their flock. They're tougher, stringier, and after they are of breeding age, the meat really does toughen up. That's why their breast meat isn't as large. It also depends on the breed of chicken as well. We raised Australorps, Buff Orpington, Black Sex Links, and Rhode Island Red's. We also had the spare few game chickens that would sit well on eggs. The pure breeds always had more meat versus the game chickens.
@miyazakiendo3743
@miyazakiendo3743 3 года назад
We used to cook them longer boil them longer so the meat would be really tender, but it’s pain in the ass to make them really edible after hours of hours boiling the meat.

I, too, went through a complete transformation of my mattress and blanket materials. If you have any awareness of what you eat, then it is only a natural next step to consider what is right next to your skin and your face for such a large portion of your day (or night). In the U.S. the options are also limited, but with research I was able to find organic mattresses and an organic wool mattress cover and sheets/blankets. It was expensive, and I did it one piece at a time over time. I found that it was helpful to shop for things after Christmas time and in late summer, when stores reduce prices to make way for new merchandise. It has been well worth it. Those synthetic materials are made mostly of petroleum, and putting that by my skin every night caused skin problems that disappeared with natural cotton and wool replacements. The mattresses are firmer, yes - but then I noticed my back problems started clearing up, as well! The best part was knowing that, whatever may happen in the future, I was giving my baby a strong and healthy beginning that would be a foundation for future health. It takes time and thought and a great deal of care to make these choices, but easier is not always better. From what I've seen from this channel, it seems that easy is not usually what you concern yourself with the most!

I don’t know if you do this but if you add a couple of tablespoons of vinegar to the pot while you simmer the bones, it will help to release the minerals from the bones and add it to your broth. It makes the broth much better and nutrient dense.

@Talasbuan... hi Tova... funny to hear you say your new mattress is kapok filled. That's what mattresses used to be made of before they turned everything into synthetics. I was born and bred in Sth Otago New Zealand 66yrs ago and all our mattresses were kapok filled. I'd say they are nicer today as ours were very lumpy !!!! Butvthey are said to be better for you as the are mould and bed mites resistant. In Australia where I've lived in the subtropics for 45yrs we call our winter featherdown cover "doonas". They can be synthetic, or cotton or bamboo shells filled with synthetic, or, wool, or feathers. We place them inside a doona cover that we remove and wash weekly in winter. Some people don't use an upper sheet just their doona.

Lovely thank you for sharing your beautiful family and home - all the words you used for bedding is correct in English - we use them all interchangeably - bed clothes is generic old fashion words used to describe all bedding (bedding is the more common phrase I use) duvet/quilt, quilt covers, - some friends use Kapok mattresses - we live in the tropics and they wanted natural fibred mattress that could breathe on hot humid nights - and laughed to see the book bubba was reading - I'm an Australian and every morning the Kookaburras can be heard in the trees - also the cockatoos (both black and Sulphur crested whites), curlews, crows, magpies, Torres Strait Doves, willie wagtails and the parrots (fruit bats overhead at night)- I love the daily routine shown in each episode and great to see what you are learning and experiencing - last time i commented i said we had a tropical low forming but luckily it did not form into a cyclone but we eventually got 210mm of rain that week

I have a bamboo and 100% cotton mattress made in the U.S. and all my bedding are made from natural materials . Including my pillows which are bamboo. I have asthma and using natural materials is better for my allergies and lungs. My pulmonologist was pleased with my choices. They actually aren’t more expensive and last longer. Makes a big difference in air quality. I live in a four season location and the natural materials are soft and warm but also cool and breathable. My mattress is super comfortable and cozy. You’re smart to change over to all natural materials. I also don’t have a lot of rugs. I have hard wood floors and only use the rugs in specific places to keep warm in winter. Rugs collect dust which is not good for my lungs. I also try not to have a cluttered home. It’s cozy and I don’t have breathing issues with these steps I’ve taken. I haven’t sacrificed any comfort or aesthetic. If anything...it’s added to my cozy aesthetic. I live by the ocean and open the windows in spring and summer for fresh sea breezes. I also use clean natural washing products without fragrance. It’s made such a difference to my allergies and asthma control. I enjoy your channel very much. Thank you 🌎🌍

Guys I'm very pleased you utilise as much food as is possible, well done and yes the chicken is so nice with the skin and soup and the bones. As a child I helped my grandmother in Jamaica to de-feather chickens we raised and we lived a very reminisent style of life you live now although not off grid and in far better weather conditions than that you experience in northern Sweden. I remember we used to sear off any remaining feather 'stubble ' in the fire, from the chicken, which didn't smell very nice but was quite effective and the only thing we threw away was the head. Ivar is growing so fast....he will be proud of alll the skills he will learn from you. Thumbs up to you all 3. I should also say I am very impressed with you both , so relatively young and extremely determined and capable of living the lifesytle that you have. Kapok does have a tendency to harbour dust over time So its a good idea in the summer to air it . The french made wool mattresses are wonderful to sleep on , they are made by craftspeople in the traditional way , they use carded organic sheeps wool which is the filling , and cotton ticking for the outside . They are stitched thru with needles and so quite firm In NZ we use lambskins for the babies to sleep on , it soothes them and they sleep so well on them . I used these with my daughter 40 years ago , and all four of my children loved their" sheepies " . When we travelled it was great as they could sleep anywhere as long as they had their sheepy and some nursing .

Soups are so good for both body and soul. I make a lot of them and freeze them. I used to buy whole chickens and break them down myself but the commercial chicken is so scary and the CoOp too expensive these days so The other day I made a big pot of Greek Fish snd Lemon soup which brings back many fine memories of our favorite Greek restaurant, The Acropole, on the Danforth in Toronto.I remember when, back in the early '70s, my friend Spooly ( he had a huge head of curly hair) and I went first to the Acropole. We entered and chose a table, sat down and awaited a server....eventually a waiter pointed to the kitchen door and , in broken English, 'You go' directed us into the kitchen where the chef had many large pots of food...soups, lamb, orzo... so delicious and aromatic. Much of my cooking comes from that experience, pointing to the pots , he ladling the contents onto soup plates and the server bringing the steaming foods to our table.I too add cheese to mu soups. I am so at home with you all.

The tiny and stubborn to remove feathers on a chicken in English are called pin feathers. I've seen some people use fish bone tweezers, but you could even use regular eyebrow tweezers. I sleep under a duvet, which is a type of blanket filled with natural or synthetic fibers that is then placed inside of a second cover. The duvet is only to be washed once every 3 months, so the secondary cover is used to protect the duvet from getting dirty and the second cover can be washed more regularly than the first.

We became the proverbial fly on the wall as we viewed film of feather plucking...the two of you peacefully whispering while your fingers nimbly scattered feathers.. So peaceful ! These are the memories I still clearly feel & relate to . Having this focused active yet simple 'hand & eye period' focusing upon the bird that once awoke us, slept upon our lap, & followed our every step. This history then leads to cooking then viewing on our meal plate..all adding up to such a tremendously rich venue

Ivar looks so strong and healthy, it is fun to watch him grow. In America I call the bed covering a comforter. Mine is filled with goose down and very warm. Quilt is a good word for a bed topper but also refers to a pieced quilt.

Your Rooster Soup looks delicious & rich in nutrients. I too like a rich broth for my soup as well. I add celery, with my carrots & onions. I also will add some wide egg noodles or rice. I've never had Rooster Soup. I use black pepper, & salt. Sometimes poultry seasoning. Depends what I have in. I love using the white pepper in my chicken salad. A sliver of cheese is great in soup. Do you make home made bread? It always seemed like a good pair. Do you like potato soup? Do you plant potatoes? I love Ivar! So curious contented & happy. Loved seeing Grandma come to visit Ivar. Beautiful drone footage with the sunset. Almost Spring. I see your snow is melting. I love your outdoor kitchen. Enjoyed your video and seeing how you make Rooster Soup. Thank you for sharing. I have a comforter for my bed.

In regards to the bed materials, I have a thick blanket with down in it called a comforter/duvet, then a thinner blanket which I just call a blanket, and then finally a thin sheet. On the bed, I have a fitted sheet, which is a thin covering that you put on the mattress. Below that, I have a mattress cover to protect the actual mattress. I hope this helps, and other people probably call it different things.

I know you work very hard to produce these videos. Take care!

When we lived on a farm in Sicily , some farmers gave us a mattress filled with wool and it was really comfortable. They said to take out the wool every year and wash it in a big tub, then lay it out in the sun to dry and re stuff the mattress .

I was so interested in all the subjects you discussed in this video. I have memories as a child growing up similar to how you live, although we did have electricity. I remember our dad killing a chicken in our basement and it running around with its head off! We had our whole back yard filled with veggies in the summer and my mom canned alot and dad had potatoes stored in a bin in the basement. ... Just wanted to mention to you that in 1979 I had the best night's sleep on a mattress filled with straw, in a convent in Venice Italy, while we were backing in Europe. I'm not sure how they cleaned or sterilized the hay, (it was covered with cotton), but it was so clean everywhere in the building. Maybe you could research this for the future if you are interested in making a mattress like this.

In my region, a plain thick covering for a bed is called a blanket. A quilt is a specific kind of blanket, where fabric is stitched through the middle of a thick something..(usually "batting", but could be a blanket) . Most often, a quilt is made of very precise pieces, cut out, then sewn together in patterns, on one side of the blanket/batting. Then, the other side is plain single color fabric. The edges are finished in cloth. The word "quilting" is also a verb, and can refer to any random, or specific pieces of fabric sewn together to make a larger piece of fabric (with or without batting). A quilt made of a single layer of yarn, and no thread, is an Afghan. A blanket can also be called a comforter, but a comforter is usually stuffed with something, often down. Eiderdown was not used where I grew up, but it is a synonym for down comforter.

hi guys! we are watching your new episode together. watching your episodes is a fun evening for us both! we look forward to it! my husband's mom raised chickens in france. what a job! to take the feathers off of a chicken is defeather, but more commonly, the word is to pluck! pluck a chicken. lol duvet = down, couette= quilt, quilt are the squares of leftover material sewn together and filled with layers, then a design is sown on the patchwork. our aunt used to make mattresses in wool (in northern italy). i believe they are the best materials for organic mattress.

Hi, we used to make similar soup at my grandparents in the countryside, made specially on Sundays. My grandpa used to pick one of the roosters, I don't know what key he had for that, but the chosen rooster received a special treatment for the week up till Saturday. On Saturday rooster was butchered and prepared for the cooking. I remember my grandma at beginning didn't want me to look on the killing process but I was too curious so I usually peeked and so she just let me after some time. Taking feathers out was so boring and for the small feathers I remember they were burned over stove or something. What I don't remember was my grandparents using heads and legs as usually they were treats for the dog. Anyway your videos are bringing back the good memories from my and they are very relaxing to watch. Thank you for making them :)

You can just say "blanket/blankets" for bed covers that aren't sheets. A quilt is a blanket that is made by a person with shapes and patterns and might have a picture on it - often with lots of hand stitching. A duvet is a blanket, it's just a french word. In New Zealand we tend to say blanket and duvet. A duvet tends to be thicker, more for winter, but that being said, we'd call one full of down/feathers a "feather blanket" more often than not. I hope that makes some sense! EDIT: actually we call it a "feather duvet" more often I don't know what I was saying earlier!

On the topic of natural fibers, it's important but difficult and expensive to change. This is a wonderful topic to discuss. Ivar is growing so fast and such a darling happy little lad! Thanks for another wonderful 'visit' with your family!

Oh all the words! A friend who is a professional quilter in America and has studied the history of these items said the following: “A quilt is made of three layers all fastened together in some manner. These days, the middle layer is usually cotton, wool or a blended batting (“wadding” in Europe). Quilts are thinner than comforters. Comforters were usually filled with down feathers, and covered the top of the bed - unlike quilts, comforters didn’t hang over the sides of the bed.” I’ll add that we use the word “duvet” to refer to a non-decorative quilt or comforter that you insert into a more easily removable “duvet cover,”’ and refer to a “bedspread” as a thinner layer of fabric that covers the pillows and hangs over the bed and to the floor that is primarily decorative (not usually warm). From spending quite a bit of time in Sweden as an American, we slept in top of a sheet, but then the duvet (inside the duvet cover) was what went directly on top of our body, and my partner and I each had their own. It was for warmth and was not particularly decorative. When we made the bed in the morning we pulled up the 2 duvets next to each other and then put a larger bedspread across the top of both. In the US we also use a separate top sheet in top of us before the duvet or comforter.
