Please Read: I want to make sure that you understand that these are two separate shelters. To get a set up like you see in this video, each shelter will need to be purchased individually. I wasn’t sure if I was clear about this in the video. Links to these shelters can be found in the description.

I think that for those who have visited the Joolca website have a clear understanding that the awning or rainfly would need to be purchase apart from the shower tent. But for those who have not might not have understood that when you mentioned that you have the option to pick either the awning, the rainfly or both.

Thanks Drew! Loved the video! That Joolca Triple Ensuite is very nice and spacious. One thought I had while watching this is having a Kammok Crosswing awning with a Joolca Double mounted Ensuite attached below the Crosswing and then get the wall attachment for the Crosswing awning. This would free up storage in your front box and I believe would setup and take down faster too but would sacrifice a little on space and the shower would have to pull double duty as the bathroom as well.

Drew, your videos are always so helpful. The tent itself was already of great interest and I like it. However, it is the shower base that is the key ingredient for me. Japanese campsites will typically have a hissy-fit (with good reason tbh) if you have a shower on the pitch itself (even if a free site) and so that shower base can really help with keeping the pitch dry and allowing flexibility. Brilliant!!

@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks Месяц назад
Hi Tim. Good question. I find it depends on the teardrop. It usually comes down to fenders, roofrails, and then just how the instant up lays square against the specific teardrop. We have had some trailers where almost all instant ups line up nice and tight with the door. But, most require a little modification. Many people go to a tent seamstress and add on an additional piece of canvas with a drawstring inside to put around the door. This often requires adding a rain gutter on the teardrop to hold that drawstring. The easier option is to just add a tiny bit of canvas to the tent that attaches to the trailer as a breezway. Because we use so many different trailers we have an ugly, but effective method. I have a piece of tarp that has a grommet in each corner. I add carbners or adjustable bungees to each grommet. Two attach to the tent and the other two attch to the trailer roof rack. if I don't have a roofrack I just attach guyline to two grommets and run them over the roof and down to an attachment point like the wheel or other protrusion. I know with how you camp, you would do a much cleaner setup. A great example of this would be Cosmo Weems. We all miss that guy. He would take his Clam tents to a canvas repair shop and add or remove segments to attach to his teardrop. He actually created a way for you to use a clam over your galley. GENIUS!

@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks Месяц назад
It works great for that with the trailers I take out. My friend Brad does a similar thing on his Bean trailer with his Kammock awning. I have also seen people hide their bolt on shower enclosures under the awning as well. But, if you had a teardrop that is less than 15" of ground clearance it might be a tight fit. Even at 15 inches I am not sure. I have been using lifted trailers the past few years. This summer I will be getting my base height Bean Stock 2.0. So this will give me a chance to try this at 15" of clearance.
@erickinne5535
@erickinne5535 Месяц назад
Great video, Drew. Like you, we’re picking up a Bean Stock 2.0 this summer. Because of your video on that trailer, we also opted to go for the Kammok awning instead of the 180 or 270. We also bought a Joolca double that we anticipated putting up away from the Bean. But… I LOVE this setup with the triple and didn’t even consider it as an option! So, question for you: on your Bean Stock, did you go for the Kammok awning? If so, are you going to set up the Joolca triple on the driver’s side? We also have an FSR roof top tent for our 10 and 12 year old kids, so we need an “open” side of the trailer for the RTT ladder, which makes me think this triple set-up won’t really work. What do you think? Seems like that passenger side will be a bit busy with the Joolca, an awning, AND the side galley/table we opted for. Thanks, Drew!
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks Месяц назад
Sounds like we think alike! Originally we wanted only the one door on our Stock 2.0. But we went with the second door because we realized we like the option of having the Kammock on one side and a side entry tent on the other. Most outings the Kammok will be enough. But sometimes those longer stays require the side entry tent as well. We aren't sure what side we will be setting up on. I have actually gave that quite a bit of thought. I made sure to get jerry can mounts on both sides of the trailer so I have the option to mount the table on both sides based on the campsite scenario. I think the triple would work great in tandem with the rooftop tent ladder if you did our setup in reverse. Basically awning room up against trailer and the tent furthest away. Many people have suggested that in the comments. I am excited to try it out in reverse. That also might make a great setup with the galley as well. Meaning awning connecting or even over the galley. Hope this helps a little.

The fact that the back half of the awning is supported by the tent, should reduce a lot of those high wind issues. But, time will tell. I plan on using these quite often this year. So I am excited to put it to the test.

Nice. Joolca has been coming out with a lot of products. I think it would be nice if all three sides of the extension part could be rolled up or closed. I mean, you could get all set up and then the direction of the wind could change and you'd have a lot of air blowing right in through the non-existent wall. If all three sides were a roll up wall, you'd have one more option.

I have the single Joolca. The double or triple are nice, but I wouldn't want so much for just me and dog. We discussed the floor sometime back, I dislike the floor and wonder if a person could cut it out of there. Last week, the dog and I be-bopped up the coast a ways. I had a lovely view of the ocean, but my space had wet sand. I put down a tarp to set the Joolca on, but it made a dreadful mess anyway, and I tracked sand all over in there. I need to set it up at home just to clean up the sand and dirt. I tried with my little broom, but could not get it all. I hope I don't regret it, but I've ordered an attached single shower tent to use for toilet. The problem with that is not being able to see out on whichever side of the teardrop it's on, plus I hope the fender won't create too much problem. A person in a facebook group has an attached type, and she has water bags if needed to keep it from blowing in the wind. I sold my ARB awning because I never used it, partly because I'm so often in windy situations. I still have the Kelty Backroads. My Joolca attached single is back-ordered, so I'll be anxious to try it.

@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks Месяц назад
From some angles it looks like a Subaru and others it looks like a Jeep. But, it's actually a Sorento. But, we did use the Outback Wilderness extensively when it first came out. We towed the Bean Stock trailer with it as well as the Escapod, and the Colorado Teardrop. It was a fun little vehicle, but had a number of cons. The biggest is the CVT transmission. I had no issue with it, but many people say it is not designed for towing. Subaru owners seem to not mind it, but everyone else says towing is much too hard on a CVT over time. Also, like my Sorento the Subaru has really soft rear suspension. If you were towing often you would probably require some airbags to reduce that rear sag. I tell folks if you have a Subaru they are a good tow vehicle. But if you are in the market for a tow vehicle, I would probably look for something else.

Floors. Tent Floors generally serve as a bug shield, they prevent bugs from getting in. They also protect against ground water saturation.... after heavy rains, even the ground under the tent can get wet, muddy and such. this is why bathtub bottom floors are a big deal in many area. they protect not just you but your gear from getting wet. Downside to floors is they often require you clearing the ground area to make sure you don't rip and tear them. They may not be the best in very rocky areas. to mitigate this a heavy ground sheet is often placed under the tent, which his more gear and more stuff to stake out. no floors - this is far more common in winter camping when there are no bugs. in winter camping more "gear" tends to be raised off the ground, cots, chairs, and of course wood stoves. this would increase the risk of damaging the floor material. in response most winter tents don't come with floors and campers will pack in either special floors for them use ground sheets/tarps to provide partial floors. or simply work with no floors. and stand on snow, ice, or frozen ground. Tent poles. Ok most tents are made to be very very temp used. They are meant for weekends, short term. "regular use" to manufacturers is 15-20 days a year, set up and broken down maybe 5 times, in low wind/storm conditions. this often leads to poles failing, breaking, etc under heavy use, especially in bad weather events. Some tent structures are available that have SERIOUS poles... that can handle 1000 lb snow loading and will not likely deform or break in extreme wind events. In cases like this though, you are trading quick set up time... for a camp system that will last for years constant use. 24/7 living. Course again, this is also 41 lbs of weight for aluminum and 71 pounds for steel tent frame for an 8-10 tent.
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks Месяц назад
It's those darnn trade-offs isn't it! So hard in this camping world to find something that does it all. Seems like everything comes with some major trade-offs. I find with a sleeping tent I require a floor. But, with a side entry bugs and mud become less of an issue. Many times I use them with shoes on. But, I also camp in areas that have fairly low bug and mud issues. I am realizing I have been very fortunate with the campsites that I tend to stay in. I need to start traveling outside of my little bubble to see how these gear holds up to different topography.

Mixed message: You do not like a tent with a floor yet you deploy an outdoor carpet?
@PlayingwithSticks
@PlayingwithSticks Месяц назад
Nope, not a mixed message. But, I see how it can come across that way. With a floor you have many potential issues. #1 and my main issue is that items on the floor are really hard to gather up when taking down the tent. Cleaning out food and debris is not easy like a home. They tend to catch in corners, hide in wrinkles, etc. Bottoms also hold sugar and smells, not great in bear country. #2 Bottoms are very susceptible to damage. Any rock or twig left unturned is a potential for floor tear out. #3 Floors hold moisture, moisture if not dealt with ruins tents. #4 That annoying crinkly sound all day. Haha. #5 Slick awkward surface to walk on. The list probably can go on. A carpet gives you the best of both worlds. Nice padded separation from the ground, but none of the 5 issues mentioned above. Cleans really quick in a river, drys quick, no sound, hard to damage, lightweight, foldable, easy to deploy when home if for some reason it did get wet. And just looks better asthetically. Food and debris doesn't hide in corners. LOVE MY CARPETS! Haha. Hope that helps a little Peter.

Please don't waste water, especially since many cities like Mexico city are running out fresh water. Or if you want some more adult reading, I’d suggest reading about city planning. Creating a civilization in an area with a limited water supply is always a risk people have to decide if they’re willing to take or not. I get your concern for the environment, and I appreciate it. But if you want to make a difference, I don’t think the best place to start is water at the campsite. But again, I appreciate you fighting the battles big and small.

P.S. that setup looked long, painful and way too much work.

@PlayingwithSticks Месяц назад
Basically it is time. I love the ARB awnings, but I still prefer an instant up room. We have used many awnings similar to ARB that require adding sidewalls. It doesn't take a lot of time, but there are many instances where I want it up immediately. That's why I mentioned in this video that I primarily would use the instant up tent, but if needed I can easily add the awning attachment for longer stays. This is similar to how I approach the ARB awning attachments. So yes, I still prefer something like your Gazelle over ARB. Not because of quality, but more because of functionality. And yes, I also agree that the gazelle is built much better than this. They all have trade-offs. You just need to find what works best for your camping style.
