This might actually be the best acoustic guitar under $5k. I went looking for a new acoustic recently and played pretty much everything under $7k. The Slash J-45 hands down was the best feeling, sounding and playing. I don’t know what magic they sprinkled on this thing but it definitely worked. My god! I left the store and tried to put it out of my mind for several weeks. I mean I have a Guild D55, Martin OOO, and J2000 already. Needless to say, I figured out a way to buy the Slash and I literally wake up every day with the strongest desire to play it until I can’t anymore. I haven’t felt that for a guitar since I was 14. That, in and of itself, is worth any price. It’s like that one girlfriend you cannot keep your hands off of. Damn you Gibson!!!

I also have the slash j45 and a j45 standard ,I never would’ve thought they could make the 45 sound and play better with it being my favorite acoustic of all time but somehow they have , I absolutely love both but the slash model has a little extra something that brings it to the forefront, amazing instrument

I just got the Epiphone version of this from Anderton's on sale for GBP599. I tried about 15 different large body guitars there in the 400-1500 range - J45s, 200s, Hummingbirds, etc from Gibson, Epiphone, Sigma, Fender, etc. I'd never heard of this one and didn't have a clue what it was until after I'd played it and then looked at the tag. It just blew me away. A massive, rich sound with thumping bass and defined, bell-like top notes. One or two of the competition looked nicer and some felt more expensive with satin necks, etc but nothing even came close to the sound, not even the other Epiphone and standard Gibson J45s. I tried out 3 of the Slash ones and struggled to tell which was best as all had different aged strings, but they all sounded superb to me. It's a pig to play with a huge V at the neck end, flattening to a C at the body. The action is bit high so I need to set it up to suit me. I've seen reviews saying the pickup is no good, but I got this for song writing and mic recording so don't much care. It's heavy and solid like a tank. The look of it is fine but not the most beautiful for me. But I simply don't care, the unplugged sound is just something else and recalled so many famous recordings to me that I can't wait to use myself. It's massive and articulate, far more than any of the others I tried. I can only assume that the thick neck and low V, much chunkier then anything else I tried, really does have an impact on the sound, which makes sense to me. Maybe Slash and Gibson know a bit about guitars? Can't wait to get to work with it. I'll sand the neck to satin, lower the action and put on thinner strings, then... FUN!

I owned a J-45 for 6 years. It sounded fantastic and smelled amazing, but it would not stay in tune and had awful intonation. I eventually sold it, but I'd love to get my hands another one day. The Slash model is definitely NOT the one I would get though. They're pricey, but the custom shop models are enticing.

@lynncarter4964

You should have had your guitar tech file and lube the nut slots. Also when restringing you must give them a good tug 3 times during the tuning. 3 separate times. Otherwise they wont stay set
@reverb508
@reverb508 Год назад
@@lynncarter4964 I agree that the nut probably contributed to the tuning issues, but the intonation is an entirely different issue. It shipped with a compensated bridge already, so I'm not really sure why the guitar was so out of tune up the neck. Anyway, I ended up buying a Martin J-40 a couple years ago and it is perfect. It doesn't do the "J-45" thing, but it sounds wonderful, stays in tune, and intonates perfectly.

I compared them both today and chose the Slash version. It sounded demonstrably better than the Standard; fuller, richer, and better balanced. In comparison, the Standard model sound thinner. The plugged-in sound wasn't too bad on this. I've seen a video of Ian Meadows (?) demoing an L-00 Studio with the same pickup and the plugged-in sound was dire; horribly broken-up tinny bitty sound, more like a bad computer approximation of an acoustic guitar than the real thing.

See, fat neck / thin neck tonal differences makes a Parton-tits-worth more sense to me than the frigging lacquer making a difference to tone. The strings are tied to one end of a neck, and tensioned along it, the amount of mass there and where on the neck it is seems bound to affect the sound, to me. You should look at a long bow being tuned, a bowyer can adjust the way a bow flexes and its draw weight by taking shavings from the stave at various places.
@Username89039
@Username89039 2 года назад
So true. The V to C shape and general chunkyness reminds me of the variety in cricket bat shapes, with thicker bits in the sweet spot. I think the tone difference if a thick neck would be far less on an electric, mainly just more sustain, but on an unplugged acoustic the difference is very noticeable.

Regarding 'flatpicking' (mentioned at 6:35): the great Doc Watson popularised the style in the 1960s (I remember the huge impact he made in those days!), but there are other great players, each with their own innovative distinctive style. I'd never say that one is better than another. Listen for example to Don Reno, Clarence White, Dan Crary, Norman Blake, George Shuffler, Mark O'Connor, Trey Hensley and Jake Workman as well as Billy Strings, Tony Rice, Molly Tuttle and Steve Kaufman. Here's 14-year old (yes, 14!) A google search for "Gibson J-185 scale length" revealed the following featured snippet: "The Gibson J-185 is proof that guitars, like baseball, are a game of inches. When Gibson introduced it in 1951, they intended to offer flat-top lovers a jumbo guitar with a slightly different flavor from the J-200. So, they shortened the scale length from 25.5" to 24.75" and made the body slightly smaller."

Paying for the name. Could probably get something as good 1/3 the price.

The standard J-45 sounds way better

Surely not having a pick guard makes a bigger difference than the size of the neck. Still, in my experience standard J45s are like snowflakes, if snowflakes were mostly utter shite. I’ve always wanted one but the only decent ones lately are the Vintage models, which are eye-wateringly expensive. There’s so much variation in the standard that picking just one to compare with is like A/B-ing Kanye West interviews. I can’t think of a better smack down of Gibson quality control than this right here. Same spec, and yet they sound so different that it doesn’t even sound like the same model. They should just take a bunch of standards and call them the Axl Rose model: random as the lottery and just not as good as the old version.

Why do they demo with amplification. Such a waste of a demo.

The pickup isn't in play until close to the end of the video. Prior to that the guitars are plugged in, but the amp is turned down.

very BAD miked, I've watched several videos of this guitar that sounds awesome, here sounds thin and lifeless and twangy EDIT (I exaggerated a little bit but still my point still kind of stands).
