I found your video very helpful as I have recently found out about fibafuse tape. Oddly, my local DIY stores (I am in UK) don't sell fibafuse (just paper and fiber mesh) but I managed to get some from Ebay. I shall be attempting to use it soon and now I feel far more confident with your excellent tuition, so thanks again.

If paper tape had a front/back side, then the manufacturer would print it on the material. Such as other products where it says "this side out" or "back towards wall", etc. The crease is there for convenience for corners in order to get a superior finish. From experience of DIY repairs I find it works well either way. The amount of mud behind the tape is what counts.

Diy here- ive found mesh works great for large gaps or cracks. But ive also used it for repairs and it just takes the primer app and waiting to finish application next day. Just took a load bearing wall down and the gaps after drywall placement worked really well. (Layers on layers) I bought the wrong mud (finish) and was wondering why “hot mud” is the finishing while the patch mud is different. (My painter just said it just is) My painter fixed the low/high points from the wall removed between the two rooms; and frankly thats why i pay him for his experience and application of craft. Mic sounds good- and info on point. Thx kilt and keep em coming

One more advantage of fibafuse is that when you sand down to much it will not show signs of torn paper which you have to redo all over with mud

For corners I will use paper, but I used to be old school and put paper on everything. Then I started using mesh tape for everything but corners. Now I use Fibafuse and paper only. If they made Fibafuse for corners I'd love to try it. Honestly mesh tape is only good for patches, but I'd be willing to try Fibafuse for that, but it's not self adhesive. But paper tape is still awesome, it's just temperamental as he basically said.

Great video as usual! We use FIbaFuse on occasion and do like it in certain situations. I was taping a ceiling in a darkened room and using work lights. As I was taping a joint, I noticed that there was a ton of fiber particles falling into the air and floating around. It was enough to scare me into never using the stuff without a mask on. Quick Tip: to keep the FibaFuse from unrolling after use, stick a heavy staple (or something similar) into the end of the tape to hold in place. Just push straight into the roll. Thanks again for all the great content!

I've been using paper and even though there are pitfalls, the results have been good. Mesh is wonderful, but not for corners, this Fiba Fuse had me crying like a baby! Pushing it into the mud would contaminate the mud with fibers from the tape to the point I had to just scrape the excess off into the trash can, rather than back into the tray. Don't think I've cussed so much since my Coast Guard days. Unfortunately, I was using a new knife that I hadn't yet sanded the sharp edges of the blade down, causing too much scraping action on the tape. I'm hesitant to continue using it but I do appreciate the mud saturation avoiding air bubbles. Thanks for posting this!

First and foremost. Thank you for your service. Retired Army here. As for the Mic, Great sound and no distortion. I'm looking for a vid that actually is filling a joint and holes. I've had to cut out walls to replace faucets and drains. A solid wall is sort of like just painting. Nor working the mud to keep from blistering. I am not a pro drywall guy at all. I turn wrenches. I even have a few holes in the drywall in the garage from a "dammit-wrench" Keep up the good work.

Fibafuse used to have a "thin spot" running down the middle that made it easier to crease and put into corners, but it was even easier to cut by mistake than what was shown here. (the graphic you showed of the close up of the Fibafuse shows the thin spot, but I don't think they make that version any longer, but they didn't change the part#) If you use Fibafuse for inside corners, an inside corner roller is a must to eliminate the chance of cutting the tape with a knife. I use it in a banjo with medium thin 90 minute hot mud for the flats and inside corners. I haven't had a chance to try the heavy duty (blue) version yet.

I started out 20 years ago using the mesh tape. It's easy to use, but it always cracks after a couple years (yes, even using hot mud). Properly applied paper tape is always the best option. I look forward to trying the fibafuse!

I first did drywall for a living in the late 70s and for the last 20 years I have specialized in nothing but repairs and applied over 500 rolls of mesh tape with no callbacks. There’s more to it than just hot mud and mesh tape. Have even gone back to many jobs years later and they still hadn’t cracked. One job I even repaired over 90 feet of cracks with mesh tape and four years later they were all still fine. But it’s probably best for people who understand how to make it work. The other Joint tapes are better for everyone in general. Good luck

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY I love your content, and I agree with a lot of your methods, as I am a current drywall finishing contractor. However, you are wrong about mesh tape. FibaFuse is strong AF. Great product! 2 disadvantages: 1) the itchiness caused by the tape is disturbing; 2) in my country is costing 20% more than paper tape; But I'm still an enthusiast of FibaFuse, I'm pretty much using machinery like bazooka and flushers so the risk of tearing the tape is very low. I learned the hard way that the fibafuse tape does not work in corners. Like you said, it won't easily bend and wants to flix back to flat. And 2, your knife will easily cut the tape and you may not notice it happen until its dry and too late. With it embedded throughout the tape, it won't come off. I had to redo all the corners with paper on top of the fibafuse. IMO, there should be a red warning on the tape, "not for corners". However, I think it's great for the flats.

Another disadvantage of FibaFuse is that it can clog up a bazooka on a bigger job. Those fiberglass splinters can be pretty devastating, too. Being able to see your potential blisters, though, is a huge advantage. Tip: To remove fiberglass particles (from insulation mostly) from your clothes and/or skin, 'reverse roll' a piece of masking/painter's/duct tape around one hand and roll it over the affected area. Now you don't have to wait 2-3 wash cycles to get that itch outcha shirts!

@@advanceg2116 Yeah...as TKG mentioned, use it for hand-taping flats. Paper's best for inside corners. Just make sure you have thin enough mud (not drippy, though) and get the mud smashed into the corner and cover/coat EVERY LAST INCH of both sides of a corner before applying the tape. Also, crease the tape *slightly* before putting it on the corner AND slide the flat edge of your knife down the corner of the tape to set it into the corner better before wiping it down.

Some time ago I finished my basement and used paper tape. Had a problem with the occasional blister, but thought it was due to super low humidity (Colorado Springs = semi-arid and high altitude), by the time I got mud top-to-bottom in the corner and tried to apply the tape, the mud had started to dry. I discovered I could spritz the tape with water in a spray bottle and that fixed my problem. So why hot mix for the yellow self-stick? So it doesn't shrink in the seam under the tape? At least for me I don't have to worry about drying time with the regular premix. I could work continuously in a single room. By the time I got around, the mud at the start was fully dry and I could keep working. Anyway, I got a roll of the paper, and a roll of the yellow self-stick left from past projects. And I've got a basement to finish this summer. Maybe I'll do the paper and dilute my mud a bit. Should be fun. I was leveling a wooden floor and tried latex mud. WOW that took a long time to dry, like over 24 hours. And it was hell to sand as the setup product was rubbery. Ended up peeling up and using thin coats of regular mud alternating with coats of pigment-free latex primer (penetrates better than paint). The primer would soak through the dry mud and bond it to the layer below, and waterproof it. And where I needed more thickness I added layers of the yellow self-stick. Then linoleum over the top. Worked great.

I prefer regular weight all purpose for taping as it has more adhesive. But in a pinch I’ll use +3 with a squirt of Drywall mud glue or just some wood glue.

Thank you for the link, wish I had seen this before I had started but I already used a vinyl bead on one corner. Looks like I'll be heading to the local wallboard company. As a DIY'er who doesn't have a lot of drywall expertise or tools, the biggest problem was learning the proper consistency of hot mud. I probably still don't have it right yet but close enough for government work.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 3 года назад
A general rule of thumb is that for taping we use a little bit thinner, and for the first coat a little bit thicker, and then each successive coat gets slightly thinner but never so thin that it wants to drip off your knife constantly.

I prefer paper for factory joints and corners, love Fiba Fuse for butt joints and repairing bad mesh tape jobs (my house is full of additions with mesh tape over empty joints aka no prefill). They even used mesh for corners 😩 I use mesh for patches, that's about it. But I always prefill. Mesh isn't bad, just use some common sense.
@travisk5589
@travisk5589 3 года назад
Wait a minute. You dont do inside corners with crease outwards, do you? As for sticking or right or wrong. The paper tape is the same material all the way through. One side will not adhere better than the other. But I would think that burying that 32nd of an inch paper hump will take more work than not having to bury it.
