I've watched a lot of laptop reviews, but I've never felt compelled to leave a comment. However, this particular video was so informative and useful that I felt I had to share my appreciation. I've been looking for this type of video for a while, and I hope to see more content like this in the future. It would be great to also see reviews in the $600-$800 price range.

I feel neglecting battery life was a big downside. Battery life is one of the pillars of any laptop. Laptops are designed to work on the go. Even if the laptop is old, you could have considered it’s new battery capacity or life as someone can easily buy a new battery and replace it later. I feel it was the most important criteria.

If you’re buying used incredibly hard to compare battery life. But regardless if that’s SO important to you then get a M1/M2 and call it a day

For that price, I would use a different scoring system. I would make a short list of check boxes to be all fulfilled. If used, no obvious flaws and working hinges? Replaceable battery? Batteries still available? Possible fan maintenance? Acceptable keyboard? Acceptable display? At least 8GB RAM? With SSD? With Windows? At least 10th gen Intel or Zen 2? Forget about dGPU but if lucky accept 680M or an acceptable dGPU. --robert jasiek

This is awesome, can’t wait to see the next part. I recently got a good deal, $1200 for a Blade 15 3070 ti. It was basically brand new except for the bent screen (fixed that and it’s like new) and slight bend on the top right keyboard deck, but otherwise, no other nicks or marks and it performs like brand new and no issues at all when pushing it.

I definitely think battery life should be one of the criterias, and it would be one key aspect to consider a new vs a used laptop. In an extreme case, is it really a "portable" laptop if the battery last less than 1 hour?

Yeah I also think it could be scored like this (for very light task scenario): 10+ hours: Excellent (4) 8-9 hours: Good (3) 6-7 hours: Okay (2) 4-5 hours: Meh (1) < 3 hours: Terrible (0) No battery/failed battery: Just skip, unless you can spend extra money to buy the replacement battery yourself (-1)

Hi Josh, I really appreciate what you are trying to do here and Grats on the channel birthday. That said there are some legitimately good laptops for $400 new and I for one would certainly like to see a slew of reviews for ideapads and hp 245 G8/g9s and all sorts of new more budget laptops as not everyone is going to want to deal with the used market, especially these days. Battery life is definitely important in this segment, whether the laptop has a backlit keyboard or not, maybe chrome OS laptops may be a better buy for $400 new? I feel like there's a load of stuff that could be covered in this space. I do enjoy watching your channel but there are very few laptops you feature that I could ever afford and I'd love to see that change. All the best and keep up the good work!

I would have picked the Ryzen 5 5625U laptop. It's exactly the processor I bought this december (although the model being HP 255 G9 and with 16GB RAM / 1TB SSD). The screen is pretty terrible but again, it's not worse than my previous laptop. Thus I can't complain too much. Excited for the next video!

I found a laptop on ebay for 389USD for an ideapad pro 5 with an i5-11300H, MX450 graphics, 8gb Memory, and 512gb storage. It also has a QHD display, with 350nitts of brightness. Overall, that would be my pick. Let me know if you think that is a good buy.

if used is on the table, there's going to be a bit of disparity right from the get go with the Australian market, but also with the dedicated graphics vs Mac. Most importantly, there's going to be a disparity with the 8GB of RAM models found on the used market and this is a key reason why you want to buy used with replaceable RAM, 2 sticks preferably. Also, right now I would argue there are some STUPID GOOD Ryzen 3000-4000 machines out there which are going to be absolutely lovely for productivity while also packing a punch gaming, even on Vega graphics.

At this budget, the best I've seen is an asus Zenbook with ryzen 5 5600u and mx450(used) in my country. Overall, it's great with a decent screen and battery life, only problem is the 8gb of ram isn't upgradeable and i think it's the same for it's 256gb storage, although an external ssd can help with that part

its obvious Jarrod is gonna win since the ranking system is mostly on performance, and the Macbook has trash IO. Andrew's laptop is really just sad... It doesnt even support Windows 11 and its gonna be outdated in 2 years... The dude really did just overpay for a 6 year old laptop. However, if the ranking was based on durability and nice to haves, id say the Macbook would have won due to its metal build and its trusted software support. It really comes down to whether you are a gamer or an apple fan. I wish they took more normal laptops to compare, like stuff that is actually a good investment. A Thinkpad X1 Carbon gen 6 goes for around 400$ and those are fantastic (albeit the performance is a bit outdated).
