Got the original PST when I was 14, accidentally dropped it in the Ocean but was able to see the metal reflection on a calm day, so I got a hold of a pair of very big speakers from a scrapper, took out the magnets and tied them to a very long fishing line (grew up in a costal village where long lining is very common) and I managed to get the magnets to catch the leatherman, and I still have it and use it regularly now 20 years later... It's been along with me to many different countries around the world.
I still believe the Rebar is the best Leatherman pound for pound. It’s only $20 more than the Bond but well worth it for the locking tools and beefier pliers. I own a Bond and think it is a decent tool but it gets zero pocket time. On a side note, you inspired me to add scissors to my Rebar and it is now perfection for me.
I have a Rebar and Charge tti. I modded the rebar with the bit adapter and scissors. One thing I would like is a diamond file but as it sits now I love it.
my dad got me a Bond for christmas as my first Leatherman and its great, it reminded him of the of his PST which was his first leatherman when he was in the navy in 86.
All non locking tools...no thanks. I'd take the Rebar over it easy even though $20 more and knowing about the hardwire cutter issue. Plus you get a saw and serrated knife.
Fantastic video! Firstly, didn't know there's an updated version. Secondly, you just convinced me to get Bond for UK instead of trying to modify Wave+.
If you're OK with having a locking blade, I'd take the Rebar over the Bond every time, because you get the hard wire cutters which are so much better. I can't see an advantage to the Bond apart from a non-locking blade, if that's an issue for you.
@@maxlvledc I haven't seen the new design, so I wouldn't know about that, but I have three Rebars with the old design (there was a clearance sale!), and they've worked fine for me - they can cut bike brake cables, which the non-replaceable cutters really can't do, I've tried them.
I’ve carried a bond since the release. And I absolutely love it. I’ve never had an issue with the “blade movement” but I’m glad that leatherman did address then issue. I DO wish the bond came with a saw instead of the file.
Interesting, I use mine as a urban EDC and if I want a saw I'll carry it with a SAK which has one. Plus I always carry a SAK with scissors as well as the Bond, as it lacks those and I use them more than file, saw, or pliers. I wish LM would release a Bond mk 2 with the addition of scissors and the woodsaw.
Love the original pst. It has been a workhorse for me over the years. I really like the improvements on the bond you shared today. Thanks for the video.
LOVE THIS !! I bought a Bond early on ended up shortening the blade and making it a sheeps foot to avoid accidents. I like the Bond, but never bought another due to not wanting to have to mod again to get rid of a problem that shouldn’t have made it past QC in the first place.. I will probably buy one or two more now!
That's great news! I held off on buying the Bond because of reported issues with the blade. But I think it would pair well with the Victorinox Huntsman. Thanks for keeping on top of things, Max. So helpful!
Back in the early days of the Rebar, before the Wave+ came out, I made myself a Wave with replaceable cutters. I thought it was the bees knees, until I came to actually use it. The non replaceable ones cut better, and the pliers are stronger. I've carried the Kick, Wave, various customs for years. The Bond has been my go to since it was released and I've had one in my pocket every day since then. The others have sat in the box with the Blast, MUT, and friends.
I carried a PST since the late 80s, loaned it to a coworker who broke the plier tip. Leatherman replaced the broken tool for free with a new PST. Carried it for another 20 years and worried how I'd replace it if I lost it. So, when the Bond came out, I immediately bought it. I now have the original PST and the new Bond. I now carry the Bond with the pocket clip, and have loved it. If I wear pants that don't work well with the pocket clip, I get the old PST in it's custom sheath to wear. Perfect combo.
I really like my Bond. Everything works and I've never had any problems with the blade sticking out when folded. Like the weight and comparative compactness. The quality for the price is outstanding. For the general amount of use it gets it will out last me easily. If I take it into the wilderness would miss a notching saw but have 4 SAKs with one and folding scissors in my med kit already. The real test of any knife, multitool or most outdoors items (after a good amount of use) is if you lost it would you replace it as soon as possible? The Bond, definitely.
I’m only at 0:24 and haven’t read any of the comments, but you said something cool that made me want to “predict” what model you are talking about. You’re not saying best value, so that rules out the cheapest options. And a slipstream change that makes the tool better? That could only be the removal of the crimper on the Charge pliers. I don’t remember which models had that, but maybe only the titanium ones? So I’m guessing Charge TTi, in which case YAY! My favorite (although I went out of my way to get the crimp head version after they made that change). Edit: boy was I wrong. Still gonna watch.
I have a wingman that is about 10 years old I believe. I used it for pliers and some tools. Never as a knife. Thank you very much for sharing. Have a wonderful day.
i had the wingman in my pocket every single day for at least ten years. It eventually got to the point that the knife lock was so worn down it failed a few times and cut me. So I retired it and bought a wave+. Its pretty interesting to see the new wingman in the stores for $90 when I bought mine new at walmart for $40
@@maxlvledc when I first got the wingman for $24 I thought it was great. The wire cutters just kind of squished the wire rather than cut it. But the size was nice
I never buy a non locking blade on a multitool anymore. Had one close under pressure on my hand. I received a really bad laceration to my hand. I only buy locking blades now.

I agree, IMO the Bond is the last good tool from Leatherman that hits the sweet spot in the triangle of price, weight and available tools. Bought my PST 1996 and retired it for the Rebar (2018) that i got at the price the Bond costs today. The small flat screwdriver on the PST was mostly used for the tiny Philips in electronic devices in my circles (electrical engineers) and eye glasses of course. 😎
Brilliant video! Thank you. I have a Leatherman Rebar, but as I live in the UK it's not legal carry - so I don't use it much. In fact I have done a couple of videos with a Mini toolkit to replace the Rebar IMPROVED Urban POCKET TOOLKIT for 2024: VIPERADE VE10 #EDC #everydaycarry ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p404U4It_iY.html I ruled out the Bond due to the issue with poor retention of the main blade, giving a high risk of slicing my fingers when opening (@jongadget's video). Now this is fixed I'll look again. Great to see it paired with an SAK!!!
Long philips makes ALL the difference. From brass doorknobs to plastic toys I have a sack full of tools from Victorinox, Letherman, Gerber, SOG etc that were useless where my original LM, later OHT, Victorinox Outrider, and even the puny Victorinox Classic SDs long nail file flat/half philips never fail to make quicker work of things than just going to find a better tool. There are those gear porn types with a kit of all sorts of elaborate bits and bobs and by the time they unpack and pack it back up they could have found a better tool and been done easier, better, faster and you have got it done with your kiss (keep it simple stupid) robust throw tool.
How do you distinguish between “new” and “old” editions…. There are deals on eBay, $50, $60, etc, but not sure if they are improved versions or not…. Can you help???? Mahalo, Joel P
I wasn’t aware that they redesigned the blade on the bond. I have an original bond, I just stuck two thin neodymium magnets inside the handle that actually holds the blade in place no problem. And it’s still easy to deploy when wanted. but definitely can agree and see how it has high value. Plus the nostalgia factor.
I've had my original leatherman since the mid 90's, and one thing I've noticed over the years is that there is something about the shape of the phillips head driver that allows it to bite well into nearly any phillips head screw around. Has anyone else noticed that?
I have an old Schrade multi-tool where the blade pops-up -- NOT GOOD! it has TASTED MY BLOOD... always add a sharpening notch on knives that don't have it Dremel with a cut-off wheel! still have my original Leatherman PST and that's good enough for me can't afford to buy a new multi-tool every other month
I have an old Super Tool that was from my uncle's stuff when he passed away in 2011 and it's been part of my EDC since. It's very similar to that survival tool but it has a lock (you have to open one of the other tools partially to lift the lock). Yeah, that micro flat head is really messed up. I really like the toolset of that bond, that file and the phillips driver have me sold, I'm going to have to wait for the local retailer in my country to have stock. On another note, that super tool with that same design wasn't the first one I had. Back in 2003 I found one under a bridge lying next to a pile of fish guts, the handles were so loose you could flip it like a Balisong. I've never spent any money on actually buying a Leatherman so when that Bond is back in stock I'll finally pay for one for once.
glad they are improving their tools and competing with the chinese knockoffs. I always try to buy american, but I was planning on buying a chinese one because of the bit system. I will probably buy the bond instead now. Less functionality but probably higher quality and supporting american industry.
I've always wanted Leatherman to make an updated version of the Fuse with spring action pliers that had replaceable wire cutting blades and for it to have an upgraded S30V blade🙏🏼
The curl is where it’s at. One handed locking blade and scissors. Hear you on victorinox for sure. Comes with pocket clip. Better file by leaps and bounds. Still light. Bit driver take it or leave it, but you will eventually trash the Phillips on the one you are showing if you use it. Speaking of screwdrivers, I have been carrying a matador 0694 in place of my PB 6464. Pretty neat tool. Very inexpensive in Europe.
@@maxlvledcI waffle on that. On one hand, I like a “real” PH2 screwdriver, on the other hand they wear out and that renders the multitool much less useful. The flat bits are ok (especially if you swap in the PH2 PH1 bit as opposed to the one with the Phillips 1 and 2 hybrid and 3/16 that comes in them), but a real driver or even real bit they are not. Hence I have been pocketing that matador recently. PH2 and 1/4 slotted in about the lightest usable form factor and has 8mm and 10mm nut drivers (I think that’s what they are, I have not used them). Sometimes you need to poke or prod something. 😂
I think the best Leatherman today is the Curl. Full size one hand blade, bit holder, scissors, a great file that you can easily replace if you prefer the saw, and all of this in a tool that is a perfect EDC in size and weight...
I think out of all the leatherman tools you have to have the supertool 300 and the rebar as the best value for money. They are just simply great. I love my surge but it’s not exactly 50$ better than the supertool.
The bond looks awesome and I want one, however my old wave is still going strong and I can't see unseating it from my belt. I do also carry a vic sak classic sd on my keys.
@@maxlvledc I use a Victorinox for about 5 years i don`t haver any plier issues i also never hear any one before who has plier issues. besides my Victorinox i also use a Leatherman Charge TTI But in my opinion the victorinox is better aand more comfortable to hold
I bought my bond first and loved the premium feel and EDC ability of the bond. Its just so pocketable and compliments my other knives that I edc like the Victorinox executive and Liong Mah #5 so well. I then bought a wave expecting for the higher price and features that it would feel like a superior tool but it doesn't. Theres just something about the simple classic lines and crisp fit and finish of the Bond that the Wave doesn't meet.
really good arguments made here. I've never been to europe (or any global region with locking blade laws), but if I ever did go, I would absolutely get a Bond just for that trip because I needs me a multitool in my pocket
I took my original PST to Europe once, and went to the Reichstag Building in Berlin. They made me surrender it to the authorities. They put it into a numbered drawer, and gave me a claim check for it. I figgered I'd never see it again. Upon exiting the building, I took my claim check to the desk, they went to the little drawer and pulled it back out and gave it to me! The Germans are very efficient.
Overpriced, outdated design, stuck in pretty much the same simple design for the last 50 years. I would never ever give this mockery of a mt company a dime. Reviews like this with free tools are offensive to viewers intelligence to begin with
The other aspect to the new Bond's Phillips Screwdriver is that the ergonomics have been improved by bringing the driver into the centerline as opposed to the older design which put it off-center and harder to use.
Totally agree with you, if this would be my first and only Leatherman, but after I used more than 10 multitools from Leatherman I will stick with the Wave+ , best value for money and best all around tools.
Unfortunately, multitools aren't actually legal here in Italy. Technically, any object that could be used to harm is automatically considered an improvised weapon under Italian law. MT and SAKs aren't considered bladed weapons (those have 3 specific prerequisites), but the presence of a blade and other harmful implements might get you in trouble. Common sense does make LEOs ignore small SAKs most of the time, unless you do something stupid, but I think my 84mm Victorinox Cadet could be a harder sell should it be found on my person during an inspection...be careful if you visit our country!!
Non locking tools on ANY multitool is totally unacceptable in this day and age. ESPECIALLY leathermans at the price they demand. There is nothing more dangerous than non locking knifeblade or even a scewdriver/ bit driver that requires torque? No way no how. And I was an Army aviator for 22 years. helicopter crewchief, shops leader and bn safety.
Hi, I'm new to multi-tool and will need your recommendations. Primarily I'm riding MTB and would like to have a tool that can cleanly cut the brake/ shifting cables. They are those stranded hard steel wire cables in the hoses (1.2-1.6mm thick). I notice Supertool 300 and Surge has the stranded wire cutter but their size is huge for EDC on a mountain bike ride. Please do recommend me an affordable light weight model that can do the job of cutting cable cleanly on the trails. Thanks.
Bond? not hardly. I have a charge plus tti, and an Arc.....both have upgraded blades, better ergonomics, and a better tool set. yes s30v and magnacut steel are more expensive but, well worth it. Are they overpriced? Maybe. But this day and age what isn't? Get the best and don't worry about this silly stuff any more.
Leatherman as a company is a lot like Boeing these days. Over-priced and spotty quality. I am still happy with my Sidekick that I got for a steal a few years back, but I have definitely moved on from Leatherman.
I prefer the Rebar. The large flat screw driver broke on my Rebar, and I was able to swap it out with some scissors for about $12. Now it has pretty much everything I need in a work EDC. I keep a Surge in my truck and a victorinox Huntsman in my pocket most of the time. My wife has a Wave+.
The Leatherman Leap is impressive as well (your video was probably the most comprehensive, explaining why the Leap stands out as a proper tool). It's akin to a Supertool disguised as a child's toy. While the Bond might include one or two less practical tools, merely to fill the quota, every tool on the Leap serves a practical purpose. Additionally, the Leap's pricing is quite reasonable, likely attributed to its toy-like appearance, which doesn't compromise its functionality.
I have the PSTII that I have carried for years in the compact leather sheath. I guess I thought “multi”tool meant I needed a dozen of them Leatherman, Gerber, Sog, etc. my PSTII remains my edc. Speaking of the file, it has the diamond side with the groove for fishhook sharpening and deem it a necessary multitool option. Knife steel sucks unless it is at least 154cm.
I have had a Wave V1, and then Wave+ on my belt everyday pretty much since they came out with it. I think it would be fun to buy these other models, but I can't imagine carrying anything other than the Wave, other than maybe a Charge, on my person, so it would really be an inefficient use of limited funds for me. Especially since wages haven't been raising with this rampant inflation.
Thanks to videos like this I purchased the Daicamping DL2 and DL30 and have no regrets. No way will I ever pay the higher price for any brand of anything if a suitable alternative exists. Both model Daicamping DL's I have have replaced my 20 plus yr. always on me SOG Power Lock, and I love that multi tool as well as my Gerber Titanium Suspension which I also love.Your channel and Jon Gadgets channel helped me make a better informed decision on what to buy.I do own 2 Leatherman 80's original,me one and got one for my beautiful blessing that is my wife years ago.All the best to you.
I don't normally pocket carry the Bond and it's not a standalone tool for me as it lacks scissors. I did buy and fit the Free series pocket clip to it though. However being in the UK it's the only Leatherman in production now, apart from the Rebar knifeless (which wouldn't be a standalone carry either as it lacks a blade), which I can legally carry. I generally carry it in a bag, in it's pouch alongside which I squeezed in a 4 inch Bahco adjustable spanner/wrench (original vintage made in Sweden), and in my pocket I have either the Victorinox Climber or Farmer X, as I do need and use scissors on a regular basis.
It was a toss up between the Leatherman Bond and the Leatherman Rebar…l chose the Rebar…but it was close and if I didn’t have my original PST it probably would’ve been the Bond. I even liked the name. Cheers.
So happy you picked the Bond! I got one in Feb 2022 and have carried it almost every day since. For context, I work in the trades and own several other full sized Leathermans + a Swisstool. Very big fan of the LM Bond. Really have no complaints; love the simplicity. It fills the role of a MT perfectly.. has enough capability for the quick work, but not so much that it makes you think it's capable of work that you really should be using other tools for.
i bought the bond 3 months ago at $60 and it came with the old blade :c. Also I recently discovered the sog powerpint and i think i kinda like that one more but I have no way to actually compare. However i'm still very happy with the bond, it is made very good quality indeed, i have put it to the test in real life use cases and it just works, i don't know if the powerpint would be able to keep up the same tho
The Rebar might have a design flaw and possibly the Bond due to the similar handle design. When applying a decent amount of torque to the screwdrivers my Rebar handle would twist open so wide that the locks would pop out of the tool. It happened soo many times I retired it. Being that the Bond has nearly the same handle but no lock I'm not sure how it'll perform under medium to hard torque but just thought I'd share the experience with the screwdriver.
Didn't know they sorted out the blade issue on the Bond, definitely now on the acquisition list to add to my seemingly ever growing collection of Multi-Tools. The Fiskars folding scissors from your scissor list would be my companion scissors for the Bond over the Jet Setter. Although the Jet Setter is quite a nice little option.
When I want to go low profile and simple, I’ll leave my Charge+ at home and carry my Bond. It’s not too flashy. Not as meaty as my Rebar, but still a very capable tool.
Leatherman Curl is my "big" multitool, commonly lives in my bag or on my work desk. Similar to the Bond I think but has interchangable driver bits and has scissors.
Thank you for this video. I was leaning towards a different multitool until I saw this. I purchases a Leatherman Bond and its perfect for me. All the tools I really need.
I really love my bond and have had zero issues with it. I noticed the changes to the bond on their site a few weeks back and was surprised that they didn't mention anything about it. I think they should have made the blade a sheeps foot or coping blade instead of whatever the hell that is, but otherwise I would still call it a perfect multitool. Personally for me the Bond is the only model leatherman currently makes that I'd ever buy or recommend ( I'd probably recommend the rebar I guess ) , I consider introducing the rebar to be the only good decision they've made in the past 15 years. I truly hate every other decision they've made. Btw I've noticed that they changed the file to that weird tanto tip looking file from the rebar, but it's not in any of the stock photos .
That original one, is the reason I never bought a leatherman. I was in a store i think 20 years ago, and that was the only leatherman they had. I squeezed the handle and it hurt my hand. I then bought a geber. I now have several gerbers, sogs, etc. I carry a swisstool daily since a few years. I got about 20 multitools, not a single leatherman.
I bought that original PST leatherman in early 90s then they brought out a socket and bit attachment set , lovely all set i leather pouches.. i did manage to loose those and other tools .. i did engrave my name on the side of it so if someone is using an original leatherman with steven connor engraved on it its mine! 😄 unless your another steven connor 😀 I use the wave nowadays but miss the PST
