“I couldn’t get to grips with my own lesbianism because people just wouldn’t believe I’m gay” omg this! Nobody prepared me for the fact that when u come out of the closet other people can try to put u back in 😭
I may be a bisexual woman myself, but I really appreciate books and other media that depict lesbians specifically. Like, sure it’s nice sometimes when a character is made to be bi for representation, but it’s more rare for stories to specifically be lesbian and I think that inclusion is just as important!
thank you SO much for your service!! I wasn't much of a reader when I was younger, and recently I've been starting to get more into books and I adore romance, but all I ever get recommended are straight or gay books, some are great but as a lesbian girl I want to read lesbian books, anyway I came across your channel today and it's literally what I've been looking for, I'll definitely read your recommendations 🫶🏻
This might sound like an oxymoron, but I'm always looking for lesbian rep that isn't romance, because I don't really like the romance genre. Our Wives Under the Sea is a fantastic example of this; it's beautiful, complex sapphic rep but not a romance or romcom story. I also love Telegraph Club. I'm super open to any recs anyone has! Edit: Especially nonfiction, that's my favorite genre. When I asked about queer nonfic at my local rural conservative library, they offered me Ellen Degeneres's books 😒
I mean I wouldn’t call it a romance but it is a love story in it own way and the writing is incredible: This is how you lose the time war! It’s sci-fi and letters and sapphics and ugh it’s really good! These are a couple you might like if you don’t want romance but they are wives, one of them is disabled and it’s dystopian apocalypse: survival kit by a.h. Haga. If you want ya that a bit creepy and has a strong protagonist then: the songbirds refrain by Jillian Maria. I highly suggest going into this blind and just following the narrative, hooks you in. And if you want mg gn, that wholesome and beautiful then: tea dragon society by k.O’Neil. If you want speculative fiction with a somewhat divorce arc then: the seep by Chana porter. It’s trans, bittersweet, and easy writing. And for fantasy I second Gideon!! But they are these gems you might like as well: -the singing hills cycle by nghi vo -girls of paper and fire by Natasha ngan -the midnight girls by Alicia Janiska -spear by Nicola grifith For nonfiction: -dear Sappho: a legacy of lesbian love letters, collected by Kay turner. -you better be lightening by Andrea Gibson (poetry) -we have always been here by Samira habib -brace for impact by gabe montesanti -love letters: vita and Virginia Some of these books I don’t remember but they were all pretty good but obviously at the end of the day it’s about your enjoyment and your preference, hope any of these comes to your liking!
thank you for this video!! for anyone looking for more recs, i loved “not my problem” by ciara smyth (the same author as the falling in love montage) and it’s more focused on the platonic relationships than the romantic one!! “she gets the girl by rachael lippincott is also a cute ya college romcom where both of the main characters explicitly call themselves lesbians in the book, very exciting stuff
I’ve read several of these- in fact last night at the telegraph club is one of my favorite books ever but I’ll have to give the remaining ones a try !!
As someone who has been an out member of the community for 27 years now, I applaud you for being a champion of queer history and recommending books that reflect that varied, often turbulent, but still beautiful history. With that said, have you read Beyond the Pale by Elana Dykewomon? It follows a group of Jewish lesbians, as well as a family, who flee the pogroms in Russia and go to NY. So beautiful. Highly recommend.
And then there's me, married to the man I've been with for over 8 years, and people literally cough "lesbian!" at me... The buzzcut confuses men I guess 😂 Very excited for the books you'll recommend!
So glad you picked up on the weird vibe in the new The Colour Purple movie! It felt very off to me. Like the movie wanted to ignore it. Was a huge frustration for me
I found it SO odd! I know it's based on the musical but I haven't seen that personally so not sure how much they changed, it just felt so weird going straight off reading the book which is so explicitly gay.
Please do a video about The Color Purple! I'm meaning to read it, and maybe knowing that video exists on your channel will be the incentive I need to finally pick it up. 😂 I think it'd be so cool to have an analysis on this and to see someone go through it layer by layer.
Happy lesbian day Georgia. Would could be more lesbian than living with your a lesbian partner/fiance? Really anyone can wear docs & get an under cut. As a trans man, sending solidarity to my queer fam across the pond. Also I'm complete sold on Our Wives & will be requesting it from my local library.
Highly recommend Great & Valdin by Rebecca R Reilly and Ophelia After All (although I forget if she comes out as a lesbian or bisexual or just queer...)
Of you're into fantasy I have a few recommendations. Gideon the ninth I strongly recommend. It is necromancer lesbians in space. The titular Gideon is a proud lesbian and a sort of mess. The Tiger's Daughter is a cute fantasy's about how these two young ladies fall in love. Has an interesting writing structure. It's part of a trilogy. Not fantasy but has horror elements, Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle. Tells a story about how a religious lesbian girl finds out what's going on in her town and it all seems to center around Camp Damascus.
Any suggestions? I’m a first time writer, I found a deep passion for writing and as I am lesbian, I wanted to give my community the books they deserve. I’d like to disclose that as the author, I will probably be biased since it’s my own creation so please keep in mind that getting my book to a wanting audience is my goal and I’ll be transparent by that but genuinely, I could see myself benching it on my period in a heartbeat. Though my book is not yet published, it’s at page 327 out of I have no idea how many thousands of pages there will be and I would love to get some ideas or suggestions of what the community would like to read! Short context without major spoilers, it’s a dark romance wlw with a tad bit of thriller and physiological stuff sprinkled in as a bonus. The relationship between the characters is rather intense, meant to keep the reader on their toes, any thoughts? I’d love to hear them! It’ll be published under the name of Hit me like a woman which might give off some hints of the direction it’s going to sass its way over to.
Lmfao the beginning rant about not being believed to be a lesbian is so strange to me as an extremely visible lesbian lmfao. I can’t be around women (including my own mother!!!!) without being assumed to be dating them. My fem best friend does get it kick out of it though.
being a queer femme is so annoying especially when you "look straight" it's like you have to wear a lesbian flag at all times for people to believe you. (i'm pansexual but i relate to this lol)
