Excellent review, very informative for us amateurs. My 50 year old son years ago sold the Mizunos I gave him, did not play for a number of years, and now wants to get back in the game. I have strongly recommended that he buy Takomo irons, most probably the 101s since he told me he doesn't want to go back to blades. Every review I have seen of Takomo has found them to be extremely playable, high quality clubs.
The nice part of Takomos is they sell the heads by themselves. I had some Elevate 95 shafts and used the 101 heads-- and presto, game improvement irons for my travel set (and pretty much the same as my Hot Metal 921s with the same shafts).
I would happily do them, if they would entertain my request to send a single 7 iron to me. I've seen one review of them (a very very popular RU-vidr) and am worried over the forgiveness of them as they don't seem that helpful from off centre hits.... Maybe due to how I test and the unique way I test golf clubs, that this may well be the reason why they are being so reluctant to send me a single iron for testing 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Current price is US$589 for a set 4 through PW with a KBS shaft. Unbeatable value. Would like to see you test all of their irons as they are distinctly different and all good.
Please swing full speed on some, I have a swing speed very similar to your swing speed and that is one of the main reasons I like your channel. Gives me a very good idea of how far and spin I can expect from the clubs
I think the last 7 iron swing on camera was one at normal speed also I captured a swing at nornal speed on the 5 iron data to show peak heights and descent angles 👍🏻
You already eluded to going to the 101 for the longer irons if you hit a 7 iron around 78 mi/hr. Should you change the lofts of the 101 to match the 101t in the 5 or 6 iron for gapping and decent angle? Unfortunately no place to test direct to consumer irons. Thanks, Ric
At 78mph 7 iron I'd definitely be thinking about weakening the lofts on a 101 to match the T's for additional launch help in the 5 and 6. Possibly even go to a 5 hybrid instead of running a 5 iron but that's absolutely an individual decision that the golfer can make. I go to a Hybrid in the 4 and 3 but have regularly wondered even at my speed of 95mph 5 iron that going to a Hybrid or more helpful iron (like this test) would work better..... Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut thanks for the feedback. I currently go from a 6i to a 5 hybrid. The gap between the two is about 20 yds. I need an iron that will either fill that gap or at least provide a lower ball flight for situations were I need to keep the ball flight low. The hybrid launches pretty high. Good for decent angle into greens. This is why I have considered putting a 5i or a utility iron in my bag. I have room since I only carry a 5w, not the 3w. Any thoughts on that would be helpful. Thanks, Ric
@@AskGolfNutsounds good. I was looking at Mizuno 245 irons for Spring 2024. The price (around £1200) plus the PW being 43 degrees put me off. The Takomo 101T has 46 degree PW which I love. The 201 might be like the Mizuno 223 (243 from next year) with the micro-slot. I'm still using Mizuno driver, 3 wood, H5 2 & 3 iron and Mizuno wedges. Planning on another 2x S23 wedges next year. The Takomo 101T have replaced my Mizuno MP-4 irons in the bag. Just superb irons and really forgiving.
Would you recommend these for a 14 handicap? I currently have a 2013 set of TaylorMade cavity back that I hit well but I was thinking of upgrading. I’m in your category of those who don’t have the $ to spend on some P790s.
Love the look of these and considered them, but i dont need the 4 or 5 iron, so cost per useable iron suddenly spikes up. Also having just had a fitting for the ZX5 irons i tried the KBS tour lite which looks like a stock shaft and in theory should suit me as per the Mizuno swing analyser, and the one i would have chosen. But after hitting it i hated it, compared to the Nippon 105 tour the difference in feel and performance for me was massive!! So i would have wasted £518 plus import tax!! I just think you are taking a chance with direct to consumer unless you know the shaft offered is 100% right for you. Other than that another great review :)
Absolutely agree and yes also to the comment reply by another viewer but then yes you would have to then source shafts and get them built etc which unless you are a tinkerer the whole process can be frustrating. I'd always suggest people know their fitting specs before undertaking any purchase at what ever cost level as any money spent that's wasted is wasted regardless of the amount. They DTC brands offer a different option in the market and a very very welcome one, but one still has to be aware of their own requirements and if a DTC brand is an answer for them individually 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Looking to buy soon and Takomo is high on the list. I wonder if you have heard anything about the new Macgregor offerings and Benross or Vice? It's crazy to me that they are putting out such high quality products at so much less than big brands! Love how insightful all your reviews are. Keep up the good work!
Without testing them I'd say that that is a fair assumption. Sometimes you get a strange one in a set, like an i230 being as forgiving as its bigger brother the i525 but under normal circumstances I'd suggest your initial thoughts would be sensible 👍🏻👍🏻
Honestly I would say apart from the lofts, every other part of the design is much more down the line of the P790s. The blade length is smaller like the P770 but the technology and size of them are in line with the P790s 👍🏻
Spot on review, not so much into all the numbers, but they made sense given the way you present. Nice work! You pretty much have me thinking they’ll be in the bag come spring. Thanks!
I like to close my eyes and point to keep it random and also it's a bit of fun.... Don't always land on an easy hole which I guess is true in real life also 👍🏻
Really good video Jay. I watch most of your stuff but when you say the 101T’s are very good but not class leading I’m not sure what you mean in the sense of how much performance (efficiency?) gain there is in the difference? I do understand the possible benefits of greater choices on premium brands). Keep up the good work!
Hi Anthony, what i mean is that with the most up to date designs and metals used, that the premium manufactures are eeking out every bit of performance and also forgiveness from their designs. DTC's are generally a couple of years behind in their designs and thus may not suit golfers miss strike location. In true terms many golfers wouldn't even see the difference and only when critiqued on the likes of GCQaud could you pick them apart. Especially for the gulf in cost between them, the main stumbling black for golfers would be the lack of shaft option availability. 👍
@@AskGolfNutan example being that the 101T irons do not have any tungsten weighing in them, like Mizuno 225 and TaylorMade P770. Not forged either. In practise they are really forgiving. I've done some really dodgy ball striking with the 101Ts and found them really forgiving.
Ones again a superb review!! Would love to se some comparison videos with the 101T, for example P790, mizuno jpx forged? And show the size comparison and detail foto? Can be real helpful when you cant see the Takomos in real life before you order :)
Agree, Takomo could do a better job on their website showing a bit more in real life images of the irons rather than those computer generated pictures 👍🏻👍🏻
😊 They may say that but when you look at them in real life and compare tech and physical size, the 101T are definitely closer to the P790 than the P770, maybe only blade length is the only dimension that they are close on 👍🏻
Absolutely and yes they won't have the custom options in shaft for instance that the premium manufacturers have, but this definitely can be seen as a very much so now affordable stepping stone whilst they grow their game 👍🏻
@@AskGolfNut I’m really stuck between the 2 irons, I currently play t100s and fancy a change, both these irons look great and are half the price, there are a few reviews out there for each one but nothing head to head to help me decide
Without knowing your strike tendencies I would never really be able to give an honest answer. Basically the more varied your strike and the more help with launch required then the more helpful the iron needs to be. Although I have taught and Custom fit many high handicapper golfers that hit the middle fairly well so they don't need the additional help from a bigger model, they just need help understanding where they point the club face and what path they need to swing the club on 👍🏻👍🏻
Seems like so many of these hitting the market lately. Tacomo. Caley. New level. Sub 70. Stix. Birdie golf. Plus we still have PXG and Ben Hogan. I’m sure they are all decent (also wonder how many are made at the same factory?)😊
@BrettWaldemar very good point, although the 431 stainless is a quite hard wearing steel, good for rust resistance etc so shouldn't be too bad. That being said, it's only an educated guess 😊
That looks like the most forgiving players distance iron to date, I’m shocked at how well this is, only 5 yards short with a 16mm toe strike is amazing
It has done pretty well of big misses, nominal misses are ok (not class leading but very very good considering the cost). Kit balanced in its forgiveness and not necessarily biased heel or toe for it's off centre help 👍🏻
Buyer beware. I sent an inquire recently by email and got an auto reply saying someone will get to the inquiry after Christmas..😅😅. I wonder if the clubs are AI produced and there is only a couple of people who handle the whole operation.
Yes!! That's it!! It's "AI"!! AI's just standing around in Finland making golf clubs!!... What the hell is wrong with you people. Please loosen the tin foil hat. It's constricting blood flow to your three remaining brain cells.
These irons feel great at first, but they are very pooly made. If you don't pick it clean, the heads start bending back and then break off. They're good for about 12-18 months, but I've had them start bending in less than a month. I sent them back, thinking bad batch, it happens. Nope, replacements also bend and break. They actually had the audacity to blame KBS, which is the shaft that they come with. I let KBS know and they had a word with Takomo about throwing their name under the bus. Stay away from these clubs unless you want to be buying new clubs every year or two.
First I have heard about this, would be interested to see hear what the defect looked like and also what where the reasons for the bending back. I'm assuming you mean that the heads were bending in servere loft decrease with the heads impacting the ground? I'm very surprised that these have reported to bend in this way. They are made of fairly soft steel bmin relation to golf clubs but not the absolute softest so would be intrigued to get to the bottom of the actual reason why the broke? 👍🏻 👍🏻
The report above is the only time I have ever heard of any issues with them, and without confirmation of such and an official statement of reasons why, any report like the above has to be taken with a pinch of salt until verified 👍🏻 I certainly wouldn't make any decisions based on a singular account either good or bad 👍🏻
Bro is copying and pasting that same bait comment on every single video talking about these clubs. Can’t find these complaints anywhere else. You’re ball striking must be ass
