Hey Chris, honest question. Which one is better?. Your previous recommendation of the WLED with the sound reactive built-in or this WLED controller?. To me, the difference is if you want sound reactive vs non-sound reactive WLED. Second question, can you use these Cob LEDs with the previous WLED with the sound reactive controller on your previous video?. And lastly, which combination will be the best in colors, controls and budget?. FYI, I want to upgrade my entire living room LEDs and control with WLED. I require at least 90 ft. Thank you for your advice. Big fan!.
Both are great! I would go with the domestic automation one for 5v led strips and this one for 12 or 24 volt strips. This controller also has a built in mic for sound reactive animations so you still would have that as an option. I have yet to try using the 12v cob lights with the domestic automation controller but it is something I want to try seeing if there is an easy workaround! The unfortunate thing about led strips is that there is not a perfect solution so it really comes down to what your main goal is. Colors will all be about the same but pixel density varies. Then it also depends on if you are using a diffuser channel or not an if you want to have a good looking white. Its fun trying different lights out but I think my overall favorite is still the sk6812 strips with 60leds per meter with the neutral white diod. I love having the dedicated white! Hope that helps and thanks for the support!
@@ChrisMaherDIYthanks for the feedback bro. The SK6812 looks nice with your demonstration. However, I believe you can see the gaps even when you use a diffuser because of 60 LEDs per meter. I like Cob LEDs smoothness, the density is really nice. I don't think I can achieve the same smoothness with the sk6812 even if I use a diffuser?. Also, the SK6812 is 5 volt. Which means I have to do at least three power injections with my 90ft project. Oh yeah I also watch your other video and this WLED indeed has a microphone just like the other one, but this controller is better put together vs the other one which is exposed. Also I like this one because it has 24 volt power which means you can power long LEDs strip better than the 12v or the 5v. The only question I have is which one gives better individual colors and saturation, The Cob or Sk6812. Thanks.
All these comments about wanting just specific DIY content is a bit odd. This is a part of figuring out which setup will look best for your project. He is spending the time and effort to show you so you don’t buy the wrong thing and get an end result you wouldn’t be happy with. Thanks for doing what you do Chris. It is greatly appreciated. God bless!
I love your videos, I’m 59 years old and after watching several of your videos, I know I’m also capable of doing some great things with LEDs. My next project is ikea shelves with led lights on top to show off the glassware. Thanks and have a blessed day.
Another great vid Chris. One thing I'll mention is that the light intensity effects the diffusion as well, so it matters if you're testing max brightness vs. real-world applications (for those who have space constraints)
Thanks buddy! Very true! I adjusted the brightness down so that the camera picked it up as true to life as possible. On max brightness, cameras wont be able to pick up much color and everything just looks crazy bright. Good call out! Thanks for the comment!
Nice, thank you. I actually used black aluminum corner profiles (with black diffusers) and a COB RGBA strip and put that all around the edges of my gaming table. When off they're stealthy, just blending in with the table itself. And when turned on it's like the entire edge glows. Those COB strips are trivial to diffuse, since they almost don't need them (especially on a higher brightness level/also consider there are different levels of density on those COB strips as well).
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! That sounds like a great setup! What black channel did you use? The only ones I found I was able to see through the black diffuser pretty easily. Yeah considering the 4.8mm diffuser actually did a pretty good job, you certainly don't need much and I would assume a good number of people would be completely happy with no channel at all. Thanks for the great information!
Since i have started watching your videos, i want to do Led projects as a side hustle. Your projects encouraged me to install Led all over my room and i am so satisfied. Thanks for producing such amazing content. You are a blessing. Have you any recommendations how to get started?
Thanks so much!! That's a great question! I just do this for fun so I wouldn't know where to begin if I was trying to turn it into a business. But one thing I would maybe try doing is going around to small local shops and asking if you could do something at their location and ask that if anyone comments on your work that they give them your contact information if they want something similar done. Lol maybe that's a bad idea but its one that just popped into my head.
I have used these strip lights in all my projects. I was thinking of trying this as well. I could not afford to buy them and test them myself so ty. I used 2 1 meter strips in the spotless corner diffuser. Those cost more. To make sure it worked out. It does they are a little wide for 2 strips but work well and very bright. I was just sure to line the segments up well so it looks like 1. The ones you testested here will save alot of my cost when using them over spotless. Ty again.
Lol that's awesome! I'm late to the party but they are finally reasonably priced that I think a lot of people will try getting some to try out for themselves!
So first and foremost- I'm more excited than you know that you're posting videos using COB Lights!!! Govee is coming out with their own COB Light! PLEASE order it as soon as you can so you can be one of the first to post about it!!! You usually always do such a great job keeping up to date. As I always say, you continue to inspire me with every video and with that I'm honestly grateful for your content. I mean it bro!!!! Have a great day Chris 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Thanks so much and I know I'm very late to the cob party but better late than never lol. I did hear about the govee ones coming out and hopefully i'll be able to get my hands on a few to test out!! I'll for sure make a video if I do! Thanks again and hope you have a great day as well!
First of all, it looks awesome Chris, you always take your set up to the next level, I did a project with some shelves using that corner profile with 144 leds per meter ws2812b but I'm still getting the hot spots, so now I know how to fix it, once again thanks for the inspiration
@@ChrisMaherDIY yeah it's pretty close with those 144 leds per meter but you can always do better right? and those COB leds look awesome can't wait to get them
the first video I watched in a long time that blew me away. 😮 I never knew this existed and your content is great without all the fluff no time wasted here. I subscribed
Fantastic review! I love these types of videos. Do you have any recommendations for those COB leds (addressable) that also include cool white/warm white?
Nice video Chris as always! I was wondering how you managed to get your colors to fit so perfectly with the displayed pictures during the demo at the end? Is it by trial and error or you have some special tool to help?
Hi Chris. Thanks for the video. I have a couple of projects planned and this will help me out. While looking for the COB LED on BTF seller profile in Aliexpress, these exact same strips are advertised as not compatible with WLED/ESP32 controllers and require their own controller BTF lighting. I am pretty sure it is just a way to force you to buy their own ontroller but wanted to make sure. I see you are using WLED, so should not be an issue.
Thanks for watching and glad you liked it! Its a ust projector with a 120 inch alr screen. The projector is from paris rhone and the screen is from elite screen. I'll try updating the description here when I get a chance to the links!
I prefer the shallowest non-flexible channels for COB. But with COB, a diffuser cuts the light by 30% and really hampers your maximum brightness. So when I use channel with COB I leave the diffuser off. (I've only been doing kitchen under cabinet where it doesn't matter)
Still waiting for Govee to jump on those Cob rgbic strips with reasonable lengths. The great thing about cobs is that you can use really low profile diffusers that don't stick out like a sore thumb from the wall. And corner diffusers can be lower profiled too. From my own research, I figured out that you need 60+ leds/m for a 16mm high profile. For corner diffusers, you either need big ones that have enough clearance or need more than 120leds/m for smaller diffusers.
Loving your videos! I just did my first LED project mostly following your tutorials. Have you ever tried a mini ESP32 controller? Like a D1 mini ESP32. I'm searching for something like that that would allow me to pack things in a tiny box as most of these controllers and power supplies take up quite a bit of space.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! I have yet to try one of those mini controllers but I would imagine it would work about the same! if you do try it out, let me know how it goes!
Good review. For me, the minor hotspots on the shorter channels do not matter as I'm mounting these as under cabinet lights and you will not be looking at them directly. I just want a channel to mount the lights to and cover them for easy cleaning and a contained finished look.
Thanks as always buddy! appreciate the support! Its holding up great! Our tv actually broke so I'm carrying the ust around the house but mostly it stays in our living room and has been fun to have. The screen is holding up great as well but I'm glad that is downstairs otherwise my kids would have already destroyed it. It would be fun to try a high end ust projector to see if there is a big difference but this one is more than good enough for my standards!
Hi Chris, I'm brand new to LED lighting. I'm curious about 2 things. First, I really like the movement effects of the lights in the video, and I'm not sure if that is sound reactive, or a program? Second, I want to install a similar system outside (70' in 10 foot sections). Are the LED's you used suitable for outside? If not, what would you recommend? I mostly want white, but the color effects are awesome! Thanks for the awesome video! I didn't even know about diffusers until I watched it!
Hey Chris, Enjoying your vids, watched almost all of them. On this project did you just use one ESP 32 Conttoller ? I'm about to do a LED multi-strip horizontal display and was going to use an ESP 32 per strip. The way you have done works well for me, I'm just not sure how you got it all done (+- 15 meters) all with on ESP #@ and those great unsync'd and sync'd effects.
Heya Chris, question for ya: The width of the LED COB strips per BTFs specs are 12m, but the Muzata channel width for the Corner (V shaped) channel diffusers are spec'd at 10mm. Your video shows how well they work regardless, but did you have any trouble installing the COB strips in the V channel diffuser frame?
Thanks for watching and great question! You are absolutely correct. The strip is slightly bigger than the flat part of the diffuser that the strip goes to but they stick just fine and doesn't effect the performance at all.
Be a lot cooler if those were "real" plants. Thanks for this video, really good comparison, final build looks clean and reasonable. Excellent work for the community.
hello. i have some questions about the sihoo chair you have, firstly would you still recommend it, now after 6 months? - if so - how suitable would it be for tall (6ft+)/thin/light people? is it comfortable to sit cross legged or any other way that requires both your feet on the chair - such as having your elbow on knee?
I would probably go with the 4.8mm one for under the cabinet and if the light is somewhat hidden, I wouldn't even put on the diffuser covers. At least for me, if its in the kitchen, I'm wanting things to get as bright as possible. But if your just wanting some nice soft light but don't need it as bright as it can possibly go, then I would still go with the 4.8mm kit. That's actually what I used in my undercabinet kitchen video I did a while back and its still working great today!
@@ChrisMaherDIY Awesome! I have that video saved so I can reference once I get some free time to get that project rolling. Thank you for your amazing videos. Inspiring and super informative!!!
Hey Chris 👋 Im not sure that you're aware of Govees new "Strip light with cover" as it is the latest product from Govee.. I personally just received one myself and I absolutely love it but id love to hear your thoughts on the product in a future video! Love what you do! -Ryan-
You were using a 12V LED strip which means that one IC controls 36 LEDs. That's why one segment of several centimeters always have the same color. If you use a 5V LED Strip instead, one IC only controls 2 (!) LEDs. This would give you even a better result. However, depending on the length of the strip, the current could become a problem...
I'm new to LED lighting and looking for a permanent outdoor option that is minimal and not easily noticed during the day. Is this applicable for outdoors and/or what do you suggest?
How would i use one driver/controller feeding x4 alcove ahelve lights? Is it just take the x2 wires from each light into a crimp connector then the controller? Thanks
Thanks for watching! Possibly if you could find one that's more opaque. The one I'm using is milky white but maybe there is something else out there that is a little thicker or opaque.
I know you didn't mention it, but how much do the diffusers affect perceived brightness? I ask because I'm planning a 12M+3M*4 (12M is perimeter, 3M*4 is corners) and right now my total cost using the 96LED/M Muzata strip you showed is just around $300 depending on the prices of the day. Since I'm planning on running the perimeter strips where the wall meets (10ft) I've been debating buying COB no diffusion since the strip will be hard to see that high to save money and gain brightness. But, since you have everything in hand: If all the strips will be white most of the time to be used as main lighting (yes I want it dim) and effects will be used some of the time do feel that the Muzata is the best bang for the buck or do you have a different recommendation for that? Also big thanks for all the videos you do with this stuff. I was able to use your Govee perm light guide to install mine this year without any issues, and I'll be getting into WLED using the same lessons with this project!
Thanks so much for watching and great questions! The muzata strips are a great bang for your buck. But if your main goal is to have them be white and your main lighting source, I would probably look at a strip that has a dedicated white led built in like the sk6812 leds. Or maybe at the very least order 1 of the muzata ones to see what you think of the white color. I also believe there is a cob strip out there now that does have a dedicated white light that Ill have to see if I can find. So many options to consider! I know its overwhelming at times.
Hello Chris. Quick question. Do you think that a combination of 6mm around a standing desk (like yours gaming setup) and Muzata U Shapes u108 on the walls (with sk6812) are gonna look good? I mean the lighting is gonna be equal/same or maybe you can see the difference because of different channels? Your setup has muzata everywhere.
Do you know if Muzata has started making continuous diffusers for the V-shape channel? Also, I signed up for Aura with your link a while back. Seems to have helped with the political spam text messages.
I was looking for that myself but didn't see anything for the v shaped channels unfortunately :( Thats awesome! Glad the app actually does what they claim to do! Appreciate the support my friend!
Thanks for watching and that's a great question. I have not seen anything that small for a corner profile. If I ever come across one though I'll let you know!
@@ChrisMaherDIY That would be great. I have Detolf display cases from Ikea that I would like to light along the side edges instead of the typical per shelf. The space is limited though. Love your videos and they've taught me a lot. Keep it up!
Go to btf lighting select the strip you want and in the description it will tell you the maximum watts it draws per meter at 100% brightness white. Then times that by 25. Make sure to match the power supply voltage to your strip.
Have you ever done an installation that the LED's on/off can be controlled by a light switch? Walk into the room, flip a switch, and multiple different led applications light up at the same time.
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! I would first check the ground connection and if everything seems good there I would try a larger power supply to see if that makes a difference.
why does some audio come in so loud on some videos more so the others when the volume on user end remains the same? It doesn't make any sense to me on just how loud some can blast the speakers even while at a low volume.
These COB strips go about things differently than the typical 5/12v do. Quindor has a great in depth breakdown video on these “addressable neon” strips (quick search here on YT). Each cut point is just about an inch apart and there are 100 per 5m strip. They are great in long runs being 12 or 24 volt. I lined my roofline this year with these in the corner channel Chris showed in this video. I waterproofed them with caulk and packaging tape (these are not outdoor IP65+ rated). Worked out well and all the neighbors have commented about my permanent LED lights.
Unfortunately most 12 and 24v strips are not individually addressable. I'm sure there is a good reason but I couldn't tell you why. I'm not the smartest guy in the world. But I would check out Quindor's channel. He is incredibly smart and i'm sure would know!
Nice comparison. Just out of curiousity (re. your sponsor) ... do we really think that the "marketing companies" who are breaching people's privacy, have stolen personal details and are sharing / selling this information are really likely to pay attention to a request from Aura to delete data from their records? It's a bit like when you receive spam email: DO NOT REPLY TO IT OR UNSUBSCRIBE (unless it's from a well-known provider) as all you're doing is confirming that your email address exists ... which means that email address gets added / sold for another spam initiative. Technically, YES, Aura does what it promises to ... but their approach is not actually a good strategy.
