I think this movie has the best of Natasha Romanoff, Nick Fury, and Steve Rogers across the entire MCU. And the way that this movie sets up ideas and carries them through the entire duration is great; Nat trying to set Steve up for a date, Fury and Pierce’s mission history, “what is Sitwell doing on a satellite ship,” etc.

In an era where so many heroes had to be some variety of snarky or brooding, I love how we had one who was just good and nice 😊
@knightbot4052
@knightbot4052 6 месяцев назад
This is a trend I'm glad to see we're in the early stages of leaving behind. Creatives have begun to realize that characters can be earnest and kind while still being capable and engaging. There are other ways to show intelligence beside snark, quips, and sass. I think My Adventures With Superman was what really made me hopeful we had turned a corner away from the irreverent heroes of the last decade.
@callmev3531
@callmev3531 5 месяцев назад
While still having that character be willing to back up their honor and morality with the ability to fight for their ideals. Steve is repeatedly tested physically and morally, and in the best of situations his moral sensibilities allow him to inspire and lead others. However, they also allow him to be flawed, his rigid values occasionally veering into stubbornness and (at least in the first Avengers film), sanctimony, which can contribute towards his failures, especially when working with others that aren’t as rigid as him. But his grief over his all that he has sacrificed, his desire to keep Bucky in his life, is his greatest vulnerability, the thing that compels him to act selfishly and forget his “mission”, showing that despite all his virtues, he is still a mortal man deep down.

Winter Soldier is my favorite stand alone MCU film. That being said, I'll defend the first Captain America film to the bitter end. I'd argue that movie HAD to be the way it was and it executed what it set out to do - which was establish Caps back story and prep his character to be pulled forward into the modern era.
@kevinw712

hey ya don't gotta tell me brother, I have always had exactly the same pick for "most underrated MCU movie", and that pick is FIRST AVENGER. It's only the most "inferior" of the Cap trilogy by way of the second two simply being that friggin good. It's like trying to compare BTTF 1 and 2. (edit) in fact now I think about it, it feels like a very similar example to me of THE WOLVERINE and LOGAN. Because I'd probably say THE WOLVERINE is the most underrated of all Fox X-Men flicks, and I think automatically gets looked upon less because the stone cold classic LOGAN is.
@popuri48
@popuri48 4 месяца назад
I agree! I adore First Avenger and its focus on properly developing Steve and showcasing his personality. Since Captain America started as propaganda, the first issue of his comics have nothing in the way of backstory for him. First Avenger, however, gives great insight into who Steve is and why you should care. Not to mention I love that they made the movie into sort of a period piece too, which stands out in contrast to the other MCU movies (kind of in a way that Winter Soldier stands out as a bit of a spy thriller). It’s definitely an extremely underrated movie.

First cap reminds me of Batman Begins. I think the first half of the film was absolutely brilliant for an origin story. I think the second half was a bit clunky, particularly with a pretty generic “evil” villain that wasn’t that captivating. The second and third Caps are awesome and helped by the fact that at various times you had wonderful antagonists: Bucky, Zemo, Tony and even T’Challa for a certain part.

It seems revisionism has turned its ugly head towards Cap: Winter Soldier, I’ve been seeing on Twitter loads of people saying the action in this film is overly choppy in its editing & you can’t see what’s happening. It’s not, the action in this film is brilliant, if you want overly choppy editing, watch anything by Paul W.S. Anderson, the editing in his movies is ridiculous, particularly his last Resident Evil movie. You can clearly see what’s happening in the action of Winter Soldier, you don’t have 3 seconds of footage & there’s about 9 cuts in it.

people on twitter have nothing better to do than to make up shit to be mad about. captws is nearly the perfect superhero movie and the only thing that lets it down is making everything hydra's fault at the last minute. hydra can still be involved but i think it's a huge cop out to remove all the government surveillence stuff in favour of don't worry it was just the nazis we don't need to have themes. everything else is literally perfect. the action is still some of the best i've ever seen. that first bucky/steve fight where steve loses his shield still hits it's completely perfect. i genuinely think this movie has the best fight choreography of any mcu movie.

@kevinw712 4 месяца назад
@@lazaroskarmaniolas7410 yeah but to be fair, for that matter you could say "your problem is taking what RU-vid users say seriously", that would be just as valid. You're gonna get your share of poor and/or bad faith arguments for comic book stuff (or really movies in general) across any social media, I'm honestly not sure that twitter is necessarily better or worse in that regard (those being VERY relative terms in this case lol). I'm not all surprised by the OP's observations, not even just by way of the time on the calendar, but it feels like there's been a certain level of backlash to the Russos in general now the last couple years. And I'm not even sure it's all that unfairly, between both the quality of all of their non-MCU output so far, and some of their opinions on film in general, AI, and other emerging technologies. I've loved them since Arrested Development but I have wondered if it's been a case of them loving the smell of their own farts, so to speak lol

In the time period between Winter Soldier and Endgame they were putting out consistent bangers every year that all interlinked to serve the overall infinity narrative. In the time period between Endgame and now, we've gotten maybe 3 gems sprinkled in amongst a flood of truly awful mass produced drivel that has no overall cohesion or direction. Winter Soldier is still peak MCU and while continuing to build or even sustain that quality is extremely difficult, as long as the plot and character elements stay consistent you can reach those highs again as we nearly did for Civil War and Infinity War but Marvel lost the lynchpins to that timeline. To recapture my interest I need a new model: plot (the writing, storyboarding) and character ( particularly casting). They've done more to harm the brand in the last 5 years than they have to transition.

I'm not a MCU hater at all. Hell, I loved literally everything MCU put out till Endgame. But the movie that I've went back to re-watch multiple times has only been this one! Captain America: The Winter Soldier! Crisp action, gripping story plus Cap'n is just kicking some straight ass man! Love it!

One of the things I love about this movie is the time it was released and the perception of the character at that time. Before "The First Avenger" I was not such a fan of Cap (16 yo at the time) mostly out of ignorance, I was more into Deadpool. I started to read Cap's comics and got a better idea of him. In "The Avengers" everyone loved Stark and his snarky lines, while Steve, as Honest Trailers puts it, was "nobody's favorite Avenger", but he was my favorite already. I knew that Cap had more to offer, that he wasn't just a stiff, boring self-righteous dude throwing around a shield. CA:TWS arrived. And boy did Cap shut some mouths. It gave me so much pleasure to see the character in all of his glory. It was what I always knew it could be. Honest Trailers said at the end of their TWS video "He's Cool now". He always was, you just didn't know that.

I always compared Bucky to The Joker. Both characters were mysterious. You never saw them in between their chaotic action scenes, they just showed up, caused mayhem and disappeared until the next one. And every time they showed up they had this eerie theme playing. And they were both disfigured and were total opposites of the protagonist but that's par for the course for most bad guys.

This was the best movie because it had some sense of MATURITY. There was depth and a cohesive story line. Marvel has lost its way bcuz it completely caters to 6th graders.

Totally agree, 2014 is my favorite year, not just for the MCU but movies in general. I remember when Winter Soldier came out, I watched it with a friend and it was so good I told him he van go home first as I watched it a second time that night. Besides Winter Soldier and GotG though, notable movies I remember from then are Days of Futures Past and Edge of Tomorrow, The Lego Movie and Kingsman.

Excellent video! This film still stands out as being top tier MCU even 10 years later so its always good to see it get the praise it thoroughly deserves, this film has aged like a fine wine Please do the GOTG video for August as well! I would love to see your thoughts on that film and the completed Guardians Saga

A little after Winter Soldier came out, I ran into an older gentleman that wasn't interested in the MCU. I listened to his reasoning, and it was sound. I hear a lot of his complaints in other people now. But I told him to watch this movie. I explained that it's a spy movie, and a commentary on the USA trading freedom for safety during 9/11. I then added that Cap is the embodiment of Classic America's ideals, while Iron Man is Modern America's ideals.

This was way better than Civil War. Literally no stakes. Bucky was literally mind-wiped and had no free will. Tony KNEW this and still tried merdering Bucky. That’s the whole point of Winter Soldier. Also, why do ppl not realize that NATASHA KNEW THIS BEFORE STEVE? Zemo too btw. Cap didn’t know what the man did while he was in ice for 70+ years. It’s why I will never consider it a CA movie, bc it was an Avengers film, that poorly adapted the comic book story. Stick to one film.

Another thing you totally forgot to mention is the commentary that the movie provides on the theme of freedom vs. security in an increasingly digital age.
@englishlady9797
@englishlady9797 15 дней назад
Captain America: Civil War is also a commentary on that too, in that Tony basically is prepared to exchange freedom for security. The trouble is that people have problems understanding how that is wrong in the context of the movie. In TWS its more obvious because the antagonist Pierce is HYDRA whereas Ross is not known to be so antagonistic unless you watch other MCU material.

As far as MCU solos go, this is undoubtedly the best movie. It was the first movie I was able to see in IMAX and I was at the edge of my seat the ENTIRE time. I’m just really upset how horribly nerfed Bucky was after this movie. I get he was fighting his own mind for a while but damn, they made him into nothing after this. Couldn’t 1v1 anyone anymore and was only used for 2 second clips of shooting a gun…. 😐

This movie was meticulously build. Every character, every interaction had you on your edge. Packed upto perfection. Black Widow was best used here. It was disappointing to see how her own movie couldn't even manage to do this much. Also Ironman won't be such a strong figure if WS wasn't this good bcs whole foundation of Civil War gets build here. We understood why both choose what they believe. The whole Infinity Saga got saved by this movie and it was extreme luck that CW turned another solid movie. I think audience actually took MCU seriously and not just toys fighting on big screen bcs of psychology warfare and betrayal went in WS. That Zola scene is absolutely haunting and had everyone in the audience re-think of our own reality. It was amazing!

I will always love CA:TWS, but I will also die on the hill that it was the last Steve Rogers movie. CA:CW wasn't a Cap movie, and boy do I wish it had been. I will always wonder what would have happened if we got a true final solo movie about Cap - one that wasn't also Iron Man 4. This movie set the bar incredibly high for what they could do with Cap's character, but then they didn’t follow through with CW. The Cap Squad - Steve, Sam, Nat, and eventually Bucky - should have had more time to shine. But Iron Man replaced them, and not in a good way. It's been close to a decade and I'm still bitter. But at least we'll always have this movie.

My personal favorite MCU movie is Civil War followed by Winter Soldier then Endgame and Infinity War tied for 3rd. All of those films are peak to me, but I also love Ragnarok, The Avengers, the GOTG Trilogy, No Way Home, and Iron Man 3. I love Winter Soldier because the action is amazing but it also made me love Cap as my favorite MCU character. The Cap films truly were fantastic and one of the greatest trilogies ever made!

Let’s be honest, 2014’s Winter Soldier and Guardians were most of the quality of the MCU besides Guardians 2 and Civil War right before Infinity War and Endgame. Every other Marvel film was either decent or just good enough to add to the overall story but nothing like the movies I mentioned above. The infinity saga’s quality can be summed up by stating: “Captain America and the Guardians heavily carried until the last two Avengers films” The only exception was Black Panther but I digress

My dad despises superhero films, but when he saw this film, he said it didn’t feel like a superhero film, which is why he enjoyed it. It’s my favourite MCU film because it’s more grounded for an MCU film (I haven’t seen it in a while, so I might be misremembering it 😅)

There are NO super villain in this movie! Human is Cap's worst enemy because you don't know who is bad or good. Nick Fury was bad ass, he was not pushover. His car scene was surprisely good. The Lift scene is like watching Hong Kong action movie, how he dancing out of it. No CGI!!. Just man to men. Punch his way out. Beautiful :)

It is so depressing how the MCU went from THIS to...this? In 10 years we deserve a truly deep dive into what the f*ck went wrong. How to get from such highs to such lows in such a short amount of time. I realize that every franchise has to have a heartbeat. Some good, some not as great. But do you remember when Thor 2 and Ironman 3 were considered bad? If they came out today we'd declare the MCU back. If I didn't have kids there's not a chance in hell I'd pay for Disney plus. Which is ok. Maybe they should focus on a younger audience again for awhile. I don't need another shitty MCU or Star Wars show/movie. I'd keep my subscription for 1 or 2 new Encanto level movies a year.

On the end point. I still think the MCU wasn't just special for some magical reasons. I just think they made better movies, and good comic book movies can still happen. I loved The Batman a lot and I think James Gunn's Superman is going to be special. I know those specifically are DC, but the point is that the movies themselves are more a product of time, passion and vision. If Marvel can just turn the slop crank back a bit they can still make some special movies again. Really wish Moon Knight got a chance to shine outside of post endgame disney production hell.

The biggest video edit (by far) that I've ever done was in the following year when I took the entirety of WINTER SOLDIER and mixed all throughout it different bits of the last 7 episodes of AGENTS OF SHIELD season 1 to render a 4hr film of it with everything in chronological order. In fact the uploading of it in 2015 was the purpose of me creating my Reddit account lol It got enough exposure that the entertainment blog The Daily Dot actually interviewed me about doing it and one other site talked a lot about it in an article about fan edits and Marvel continuity. The craziest part is I did the original version of it on nothing more advanced than Windows Movie Maker on my ancient desktop PC lol I've been rocking on Wondershare Filmora for the last few years now and did a whole revamped, cleaner version of it a couple years ago.

2014 also gave rise to Agents of Shield. Even though it wasn't technically MCU, it was still an incredible show, and was a great supplement to the great movies coming out.
