I think you ran into the same issues I ran into trying to use "matter dematerializer" to mine salvage magnet asteroids, they have a real fast initial burst, but the fire rate goes down real fast, as it has to reload before it fires, you can get the same fire rate if you let it load for a bit then get back to firing. They also tend to scare the ever loving crap out of your team when you start shooting. That being said, they are very effective at opening a breach into a place and just devastating everything in a general direction every so often. There's a few unidentified asteroids that the "matter dematerializer" will absolutely trivialize all the threats and turn it into an easy loot run. Unless the physics changed you can shred an asteroid then crash into it to shift all the ore to your ship, assuming your grav gen works the ore will stick to your ship so you can just shove the asteroid into space and find another. Shame the guns are just not particularly efficient at it.
