I get the question all the time from Traditional Martial Artists "What are the Best Martial Arts Style to Combine?" and for those who are looking for modern Martial Arts to take, Ramsey Dewey has the answers!! We talk about what Modern Martial Arts Style you should look into next if you take Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Kyokushin Karate, Sport Karate, and even Capoeira! These styles like WTF and ITF taekwondo are very kick heavy and do a great job closing distance in fighting.. but they need a few things! Much like Wushu Kung Fu, Kyokushin, WKF Karate and Capoeira need holes filled. Some Modern Styles we suggest here are Boxing, Freestyle Wrestling, Judo, Muay Thai and Kickboxing!!
Go Subscribe to Ramsey Dewey:

If you are a traditional Martial Artist, I hope that you'll take Ramsey Dewey and I's talk into consideration!

I agree with your stances on kung fu. I personaly think it is a great marshellart to train in, but only if you know what real life combad is like. If you don't know how to fight in a real fight wushu becomes a dancing style instead of a marshellarts. Cause if you have never fought a real fight before they basicly learn you how to dance, but if you have you can use your new found skill and transulate them for combad as wel making them effectif. Sow I completly agree with you if your trained in kung fu do some kickboxing as wel then combine the 2 and you be flying around like a butterfly, blocking punshes left and right, while using all kind of uniek fighting technieks and basicly you become kind of kick ass. It will give you the space to actueely put your techniek to the test and you learn how to make them work in true combad. Instead of just performing a techniek you can use them on a actueel living enemy and that will make all the differnce in my opion.

I'm happy to see that FINALLY we're going forward and forward abandoning the classical scheme "muh style beats yours" and getting to the real point of mixing various styles. In 100 years there will be only one martial art. forget culture and tradition. If everybody cross trains, in time tradition wont mean anything, next they start getting rid of the kata, like they did in kudo karate. We will have one mut mix and probably call it mma. Damn mma swallowing up all the Styles and shitting on tradition hahaha. Styles will be defined only by the rules as a sport. Basically they will call it boxing or wrestling .wrestling will consist of juso freestyle sambo etc.. boxing karate savate muy Thai etc.

Because they're all actual martial artists, and as Ramsey often says, martial arts is the pursuit of the truth. There are notable exceptions, but if you're a real martial artist chances are you've been humbled plenty of times in sparring or competition. And if you can take a right hook to the chin or being thrown on your head, chances are you can handle some jokes and/or constructive criticism. Kwon Kicker, Rokas, and Rob from McDojolife are much the same way and have been involved in collaborations.

I'm glad to have had a profesor who actually did take quite some time explaining how some moves would work for real, and in the roda we had plenty of takedowns happen. Not constantly because the comraderie aspect still made it that constantly throwing your partner to the floor would kind of mess up the flow and play, but if someone kept making themselves open, you'd drop them on their butts and pick em back up. That said he actually did have a bit more of a focus on Angola though, and a lot of that is really close range and a lot of just snaking around each other, very low to the ground, very occasionally a kick or a strike but Angola is 100% about positioning yourself and not letting someone else into an advantageous position over you.

The same thing can be said about most Martial Arts, even Karate or Kung Fu. For example, sometimes what looks like a kick is actually a footsweep or hip throw. Compare a back kick to the Judo throw called Uchi Mata, for one example.

This was a great video. No martial art is complete on its own. Even if you learn from someone who is a "complete fighter", they will teach you either what works for them or what they were taught. Neither is perfect to make you a complete fighter too. We are all built differently. Where is your center of balance? How long are your legs in relation to your arms? Your back? Do you have especially quick reflexes? How is your pain tolerance in various parts of your body that are good for absorbing impact? There are hundreds of variables that each person must explore for themselves -- the best way to do this is usually to learn as many styles as possible, and learn them well enough to sift through and find what works for you. If you are looking to get 80% of the way there quickly, this video is for you.

God bless Ramsey Dewey for explaining the parts of Capoeira people rarely grasp unless they actually read the books about Capoeira self-teaching, and have had the luck of getting a good Capoeira master that teaches the full art. I have been a fan of his for some time, and he never fails to point out things people now a days do not have the patience to learn but need to learn.

I'm a Wushu guy and thanks to Sanda training, I've been punched in the face a lot (thankfully controlled mostly by trusted sparring partners)! It's been very educational in testing what works and what doesn't from forms! If we want to talk about fighting seriously, sparring is a must for Chinese martial artists, traditional or modern Wushu or otherwise! Also ACL tears are a huge problem in the sport of Wushu, both in Taolu (forms) and Sanda (sparring). We also need to evaluate our practices and training methods, then what we're doing wrong or what we're overlooking to find out what causes these kinds of injuries.

What he said about the BJJ and Capoeria crossover is very very true. Some of the baddest BJJ guys I've ever rolled with are UK based Brazilians who cross train BJJ/Lutre Livra and Capoeira, their speed, strength and flexibility is something else, and because a few BJJ takedowns are based on Capoeria ones those movements are drilled into their heads to the point of they are taking you to the ground. It made me wonder if i was doing the same sport as them, in all seriousness if you show up at a BJJ tournament and one of the guys there is doing a Capoeria warm up, you're going to be having a bad day.

That's really interesting about capoeira being wrestling because I started learing some this week and one of the first things I did on the heavy bag was go from a low leg kick into a rising kick and then I went for a body lock. It just felt right even though it wasn't part of the syllabus of movement. Knowing that it can be a useful wrestling tool make that instinct make so much more sense now.

My background is Kyokushin ,Muay Thai and Judo in Hawaii. You guys got it spot on with this analysis. Kyokushin I feel will toughen you up more then most martial arts but you need to learn how to slip and dodge head punches. Combining it with the Muay Thai clinch and Judo throws, will compliment the Kyokushin aggression perfectly and train you to know how to deal with head punches.

The way we always played capoeira angola was to use the kicks and hand movements to set up sweeps, take downs, and head butts. If there was a way to "win" against the other player it was to put them on their butt or back in a controlled manner. Just kicking or open hand striking someone was kinda considered ugly and messy. I know not every capoeira school approaches the game the same way, but for us it was a game of physical chess, trickery, and control.

I feel like studying the other arts would benefit you into combining their strengths or main techniques into your own form of martial art. Also, bodytype is also taken into account as not all body types can perform a spinning back kick or a high jump kick. I feel that depending on the body that you have you must adapt to your own form of martial art that feels comfortable. Darth Vader would be a example as his form of lightsaber combat is Form 5. Its a powerful style which requires alot of strength to strike the opponent and perfect counter attacks against lightsaber and blaster. However, when his body became burned and crippled from the lavapit he wasn't able to perform high acrobatic jumps or move with blazing speed like he used to due to his prosthetics slowing him down. He ended up having to relearn every form of lightsaber combat from form 1 all the way to form 5. From that, he used his own variation of form 5 which is simple pin point attacks and powerful force abilities to end the fight as quickly as possible. He ended up surpassing his former self and became a skilled jedi hunter. Moral of the story, a martial artist is just as good as the art he or she has developed on their own. Like a painter with their own unique style of painting or a writer with their own unique writing that bends and twists to their whim. I would just take the concept of other styles and integrate a different unique form of martial art.

Another useful bit about capoeira I've noticed: basically all the kicks you perform are spinning heel kicks. If you ever watched the ultimate fighter, a guy's jaw was broken with such a kick. The kicks they perform constantly in that martial art are some of the DEADLIEST kicks that will undoubtedly knock someone out if you land it. They also perform while getting as close as they can without actually hitting one another which I'm sure builds insane control of your body. Capoeira seems to be a hugely understated martial art in my opinion.

I think it's also important to remember what you're trying to get out of mixing styles, I've been mixing muay Thai with yang mian (kung fu) and I found it to be too rigid. I plan on swapping out the muay Thai for boxing tho

For traditional systems of kung fu I’d say boxing combines amazingly especially with systems like Xingyi quan ,Zanshou quan and Wing chun the boxing basic strikes work great for teaching beginners how to fight quickly and are great fundamental strikes to use in a match or street fight and the traps ,parry’s ,throws, foot work and aggressive mentality of kung fu compliment each other beautifully

If I had to guess, I'd say wrestling as that is what is lacking in a lot of the training and would lead to a better understanding of a lot of the hand forms, but a good understanding of boxing with a style like Wing Chun would definitely be useful as well.

For wushu, I think that sanda is an obvious contender, as it fits in with the characteristics of kung fu striking (obvious reasons), but I actually think, assuming sanda is already a part of the program, that dutch kickboxing would be a good pair. It allows for the knees and elbows which are so often left out of sanda, despite being such big parts of arts such as baji, and emphasises striking for the purpose of knockouts, instead of the bad habits sanda can form with striking for points

Indeed it does, Atemi as in striking and Waza as in technique. That being said most modern karate schools don't devote a great deal of time to grappling even if it is all over the katas and most judo schools don't spend a great deal of time on striking other than throwing. This is why cross training allows you to further develop these aspects with specialists. Being that Japanese and Okinawan martial arts have interacted with each other for a long time there is bound to be common ground.

My traditional wushu friends also do Sanda/sanshou so they know what it means to get punched in the face. Personally I started karate ( shotokan and sports karate) in 89 an Judo in 91. They are very complementary . I added aikido ( yoseikan) in 2017 . I have dabbled in muay thai (took around 30 lessons and seminars) and kungfu( Northern shaolin in my tern age years and taichi starting in my 30's ). I agree that judo has been the best compliment to.my karate for seld defense purposes. For well- being it has been taichi ( which i still practice) and Yoga.

@@yetanotheryoutuber4271 I stuck with the ones that are useful. Tai-Chi, QiGong, WuDang, Shatokan Karate, and Hapkido fallow similar circular movements. Pencak Silat and the others teach practical application. Tai-Chi was originally a form of Chinese boxing it isn't really taught the way it was so us that actually want to use Tai-Chi in a applicable fighting style are limited to a book called Tai-Chi Touchstones Secret Yang Family Transmissions. We also have to learn it in an applicable way and the best way is to use the marital arts that use similar movements. Judo combined with Greco Roman Wrestling, Freestyle Wresting and Brazilian Jujitsu teaches you how to perform a takedown and what to do on the ground. It's like JKD Bruce Lee never intended JKD to be a fighting style it is a fighting philosophy. there are many moves a human body can do in a fight, each style focuses on some moves, because just like any other type of knowledge, you can't know everything. some styles sompliment eachother real well, and this video does well in explaining these stuff. the absolute best way to know how good of a fighter you are, is not the cage, or the matt, or the ring etc.... it's when someone is trying to kill you and you have to defend yourself, which is not an ideal situation for training, so martial arts are a sustainable option.

This was a pleasure to watch guys. Some really good insights as usual. I was a little surprised at the end with the Karate analysis and style paring. My background is in Hawaiian kenpo with a good deal of point sparring experience with pure karate guys. Our curriculum has a lot of judo take downs and aiki jujutsu in it. Point tournaments vary in rules of course, but to be clear, the WKF (what will soon be seen in the Olympics) does allow face shots and takedowns with a strike and it is light contact (as you stated). As someone who’s always reassessing my weaknesses and the holes in my game, I was surprised that Ramsey picked Judo. I’d say Judo is already heavily embedded in Karate, especially at the WKF level. All those guys are proficient in Judo. You will see tons of sweeps and trips, and tai otoshi take downs are a dime a dozen. You’ll even see o goshi and seoi nage. Anyway, I’m surprised being a wrestler and all, Ramsey didn’t pick wrestling, shoot fighting, or BJJ. To me it’s the ground game that seems to missing most in karate, and that’s the direction I’ve decided to head to become more well-rounded. Thanks for this interesting discussion that uplifted the value of each art and offered honest and balanced commentary! Oss!

Anything is improved with what is basically kickboxing with throws on it... Right? On the other hand, shootboxing could be better(sanda + submissions while standing) Might be because i went from point style to boxing from boxing to sanda, from sanda to bjj and realised i made most of my progress in sanda...

My answer here would be Krav Maga or something similar. Any close range striking art that has a wide array of attacks from many positions is good, especially one designed as an on-the-street self-defense art rather than a cage/ring competitive fighting art. Krav Maga fits the niche well. ... Judo/Jujitsu artists, like wrestlers, are difficult to kick. The moment you are on one foot to kick, you are planted on your face and the fight is over. (Spoiler: you lost.) But it's a lot harder to guard yourself from a hand strike; they are faster, can be thrown from a stable base, and can come in the middle of a clinch to disrupt your balance. Pain has a way of momentarily paralyzing the body, especially the first punch that you take. You also don't want to wrestle with a Judo/Jujitsu artist. They can (and usually will) get the better of you. It's well within their wheelhouse, so to speak. ... Where Judo/Jujitsu can fall short is against competent rapid striking; even just some dirty boxing can be enough, if the boxer knows clinches at all to get in some nasty strikes before the throw can come. Knowing where these strikes can come from, what makes them dangerous enough to end the fight, and how to defend against them before you have your throw in motion is critical. Krav Maga (or a similar art) teaches you that in an efficient package. Just be careful who you let instruct you. (There are some nonsense moves in almost every art.)

@KaptainCanuck

@Dave Cockayne, a t-shirt is "gi", and so is a dress shirt, a suit,, etc. The correct term is either keikogi or dogi for the all-around generic martial arts clothing or the art studied with the -gi added on (ex judogi, karategi, etc) and is not used on its own as it simply means, pretty much ANY clothing in Okinawan/Japanese.

@@SenseiSeth Do your own research. I recommend styles like Pekiti Tersia (the style the filipino army uses, also, check out "PTK sparring videos"), Modern Arnis and Balintwak. But here's a hint: • Weapon arts - solid (at least in 70% of all the styles I've seen) • Unarmed arts - okayish (Some styles do boxing which is great, and there is the good idea that weapon arts translate to empty hands as well, like the hammerfists and/or bolo punches. But, there are some real kung fuey techniques like trappings that don't seem legit. Also, their kicks are practical but target only the hips, groin, knees and feet.)

@Nick Meyers, I did not say it does not apply to martial arts/fighting. People talk about "taking JKD". There is no taking it but there is studying and following it but it is not a martial art or a fighting system/method. It is akin, roughly, to the Art of War by Sun Tzu or The Book of 5 Rings.

Can't help but feel that the best choice to pair with the traditional Wushu forms is Sanda/Sanshou. It has a certain poetry to it: you've learned the artsy fartsy side of Wushu*, now you can learn the practical/modern/functionalized side of it. Like the Wushu forms, Sanda took the various forms of Kung Fu and put it in a giant melting pot to form one single coherent curriculum (more or less). The result is one of the more proven forms of striking in the world, IMO. It's basically K-1 Kickboxing but with Judo-esque hip throws and most wrestling takedowns allowed, so you'd be fairly well-rounded to boot. And of course it fills the "hard sparring" requirement laid out by you and Ramsey. The end result would be someone with a pretty neat perspective on the heritage and divergence of Chinese martial arts. *I'm kidding. I have nothing but respect for anyone who mastered traditional Wushu along with the time and dedication it takes.
