I bought a Toshibe Satellite Pro 430CDT because I wanted a slightly faster MS-DOS laptop WITH cd-rom drive. It didn't all go to plan.

Personally the best MS DOS gaming platform for me would have to be the DS-Lite sized (but far superior SVGA TFT screen) Toshiba Libretto. They go up to 233MMX Pentium class before the VHS cassette sized case changed. I use it for playing PC games on something as convenient as a Nintendo DS-Lite.

Very nice video. Good ride to memory lane :) I have good memories about the Compaq LTE5000 series but also this Toshiba. In that era the best laptop brands.

Thank you. I love them both, each for their own reasons. But I have a slight preference for the Toshiba tbh.

That's a nice little machine. Toshiba built some good stuff back in the day. For those that are looking to rebuild these CMOS batteries, the connector is probably a JST Micro 3 pin.

Or the 3 pin connector from a crappy Dia scanner. ☺️

This channel's views are not very consistent because of the inconsistent uploads. But I know you seriously don't care about views since the videos you make are always in good quality and very rewatchable. Thanks for the videos.

I have to balance a full-time job, a young family and RU-vid. The first two take up a lot of my time. But yes, regular uploads would help. I'm doing the best I can. Thanks for sticking by! ❤️

Quarantine.... Long time since I thought about this game. Apparently the developer is now part of Rockstar, even though I'm not sure if the publishing rights are with Take-Two as well. I wonder if a modern iteration in the form of a part 3 would do well... Anyway, found this channel because of your tweakblog, definitely subscribed. One thing I was curious about: did you see a difference in how this Toshiba vs the Compaq was build? Was there a noticeable difference in quality of certain parts or maybe some interesting design details?
@RetroGameCouch
@RetroGameCouch 2 года назад
The build quality of the Toshiba and Compaq is very similar, although I prefer the Toshiba for some reason. It just feels a bit more sturdy. In terms of other differences: both are pretty modular, allowing you to easily swap batteries, harddrive, memory or CMOS battery. Although the Compaq allowes easier access to most components, I like the Toshiba approach better where everything is tucked away under the easily removable keyboard. It's a personal preference, but for me the Toshiba is the better machine.

Thank you for showing all this! I just got a 400CDT and I’m excited to try some games on it, any recommendations for it? Should I get it serviced or as long it’s running fine I shouldn’t worry. Thanks.

using a compaq armada 1592DT P1 233MMX for MSDOS and mid 90s games. Armada E500 for late 90s/early 2000s games. I still have this Gerricom P3 1ghz with an early radeon mobility, but something with the videochip is wrong, it freezes once the drivers are loaded.

All the Toshiba laptops of this era had terrible sound chips. Tough machines though

Hi leuke video :) These Toshiba's are nice indeed. Most of them actually have a bios option to strech 640x480 so you don't need any tool. I own 2 identical Toshiba tecra 550 cdt's which can do this, pImmx 266mhz with s3 virge, great for playing serial games. These also have usb. I also have a 400cdt, which has a native 640x480 screen and 75 mhz (like the compaq you mentioned) with the docking station and several external floppy disk drives.
@RetroGameCouch

@@RetroGameCouch Ah, the bios option is called "LCD Display Strech". Im not sure if your model supports it though.

I just tested it on the 430cdr. Mine has an option called "text mode stretch" which works for the DOS prompt, but not for games.

You should try out an IBM Thinkpad 570. I use this as my DOS laptop. It's a bit newer, runs 98, pretty portable but has the utradock so can dock it for peripherals and output to a nice CRT.
@RetroGameCouch
@RetroGameCouch Год назад
Does it 640x480?
@rhysholdaway
@rhysholdaway Год назад
@@RetroGameCouch that's the downside. I believe it's a native 1024×768 so will stretch the image to fit. I have a later model x60s which does support this but you loose native DOS audio.
@RetroGameCouch
@RetroGameCouch Год назад
Stretching works, but native is better imho.

@@RetroGameCouch Agree. In my mind it's a trade-off between portability, versatility, ease of maintenance, compatibility and authenticity. Not sure if I'll ever find the perfect DOS laptop.

I have a nice compaq LTE 5000 640x480 and it's great to have. I am confused though about if it is possible to connect a midi device such as an MT-32 or sc88 to it at all, with the help of a docking station or other means? Do you know if this is technically possible ?
