I'm still super sick so I whipped up this marathon of great TG16 games in the meantime. I'll get back to my usual stuff hopefully as soon as this weekend.
Damn, Riggs, I hope you get better, man. I can't wait until you talk about AEW: Fight Forever since you and I are both fans of old-school wrestling games.
This is great! I'm prepping for the Analogue Duo and I've been trying to slowly expand my collection. Plenty of titles here that are new to me, thanks!
TurboGrafx-16 and me go way back to its release and frustrations two years later when new game releases barely trickled in. The Legendary Axe or R-Type should have been pack in for sure. Vasteel is my absolute favorite game mostly vs a friend. Also love Bomberman 93, Military Madness, Beyond Shadowgate, Gate of Thunder & Air Zonk
@@kenterminateddq5311 Yeah I have them, the TurboDuo (CD games are region free!) & PC Engine. Too bad NEC didn’t know what they were doing in North America as hundreds of fantastic PC Engine games left stuck in Japan never to be ported to NA.
Bonk 3 was absolutely released as a HuCard in both North America and Japan. There was also a CD version, but it’s mostly the same other than the soundtrack and some extra multiplayer minigame modes.
The Legendary Axe games WERE actually two completely different games in Japan. They only named the second one that here in the US. (maybe Europe too) I love both games, but they're not the same franchise.
TG16 / PCE is an awesome system. So many great games for it. A lot of them never came out in the US but all of them are easily playable today. Hope you feel better soon, John.
I don't have very much experience with this platform; so this video is good for that. One game a roommate and I played on another roommate's system was Moto Roader. It is surprisingly addictive.
I loved the turbographx-16, had it when I was 9. Had Blazing lasers, Keith Courage (half the game wasnt so bad) Chu man fu, R-type, Victory run. I wish I had taken better care of it.
You're the one who introduced me to Chew Man Fu. Such an awesome game, one of my favorites on the system. Love the TG16. Stoked out of my mind waiting for Analogue's new Duo console to ship!
I discovered some of these when I got my Coregrafx Mini two Christmases ago, and that device might be the best gaming purchase I’ve made over the last few years. It legit made me wish I had taken the TG16 plunge back in the day. Neutopia, Dungeon Explorer, Blazing Lazers, Alien Crush, Chew Man Fu…Lords of Thunder is now my favorite shmup ever, and I had never even heard of it a few years back.
Growing up Neutopia, keith Courage, and World Court Tennis were my favorite games for TG16 games. Just to focus on one, World Court Tennis was an RPG Final Fantasy type game where the battles were Tennis matches. Fantastic system. I still have my original and the mini console.
Ninja Spirit, Bonk 3, Chew-Man-Fu, Pac-Land and Paradol Stars were my favorites released on the system. I honestly never heard of Cratermaze until last year. Probably an unofficial sequel to Heiankyo Alien.
Solid s stuff John thanks displaying some games that are on the mini that aren’t… and emulation now a days is probably the way to go and add these roms to those minis is so easy nowadays… keep it up
I was a SNES fan boy but I loved my TurboDuo. I sank way too much time in Ninja Spirit, Ys, Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder. Also an impressive port of Street Fighter II if you were willing to go through the hassles of importing.
My cousin was going to give me his Sega Master System and TurboGrax 16 , like 30 years ago, but I didn't feel right about it. I can't say I regret it even though the TurboGrax 16 is super expensive now, but I just enjoyed hanging out with my cousin. I never get to see him anymore because he has kids now.
Wish they had western style games maybe somebody will start making them. Like to see Robocop, Batman and Big Bang Pro Wrestling playing on the TurboGrafx16.
Hello, I've been watching your show for quite a long time and enjoy all your episodes. And are you trips that you go to the game store? My question is is there any way to port PC engine games on to the sega Genesis?
In another time-line we're playing slinky eternal as slinky guy getting to erase off brand toys nobody wanted as gifts and decided to take out their pain from rejection on all the kids who tossed them to the side and never played with all because they didn't have movable limbs nor any projectiles for guns. All this takes place in a world made from mega blocks since the Legos weren't lying in the junk bin.
I own this console but I’m not going to play on it ever again nothing was a big deal the graphics were 16 bits it’s time to move on enjoy the PS5 Xbox series X Nintendo Switch PC
while it was actually an 8bit system, it was the peak of 8bit tech. even better than the Sega master system which wasn't shabby. both were better hardware than the NES.
Lol, the NES is better than the SNES in may aspects. Of 101 games that came out on both NES and SNES, at least half of them are better on the NES, and another 30 are on par. Sure the PC Engine is better than both, but the Master System struggled in the nineties, where the NES still had plenty of life. Somehow the 6502 did better than the Z80 at double frequency.
Can't remember the name after all these years, but there was some kind of rpg racing game i had as a kid that i loved. Never could beat the last boss but the game was really cool. You'd go in this dragon warrior style over world, find towns, race in the local track to unlock better parts. Really cool game
Fun Fact: They didn't really want to do a mascot character for the TurboGrafx 16 like Nintendo did with Mario and Sega with Sonic the Hedgehog. He kinda became the mascot in America by default because at the time the American consumer was used to a console having a mascot, and was more or less expecting there to be one.
Hidden gems > Keith Courage, Bonk....looking forward to the master system hidden gems like Alex Kidd in miracle world, or that lesser known Game boy hidden gem Tetris 😂
Man I wish I had the money back in the day to buy the Turbo Duo but I was already buying games for NES, SNES, Master System and Genesis. And I was studying and working. Good reviews and cool video John!👉😃👈
Man. I played a lot of Alien crush on my turboExpress. I had my TurboGrafx mini hooked up for a while, specifically to play alien crush. I recently discovered that A) you can still buy games on the ps3 store and B) that Alien Crush was available. So that’s where I play my turbo Grafx pinball, now. Meanwhile, what kind of a tg-16 list doesn’t have the criminally underrated TaleSpin? The TG version is by far the best. Strangely, the TG version of Darkwing… Ehh…
Devil's Crush - In Japan, the symbol on the top screen WAS a pentagram. They changed it for the international releases to avoid offending sensitive westerners. This also came out for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. And there was a Genesis-only sequel called Dragon's Revenge. Personally, I don't think it's as good though. Blazing Lasers - Ironically, I think there are TOO MANY powerups. Not the variety of them, but how many come up on the screen. Once you get the powerups you want, it actually becomes a chore trying to keep them, because it's so hard to avoid hitting another powerup by accident.
Cratermaze alone is reason enough not to get that fugly chunk of black plastic called Turbo Grafx 16. Get the white PC Engine, nothing else. It is cheaper, looks cooler, and has nice looking HuCards instead of lame text-only designs. Cratermaze on the PC Engine is Doraemon! Yes, you see that right, it is a ROBOT-CAT! The music is much cooler too. Second reason YOU MUST get a PC Engine, is Final Soldier, the best of the Soldier series that never came out on TG16.
The best thing about Download is the profane Engrish. The worst thing about Download is how difficult it is to find info about it on the Internet, because of the name.
In your opinion is Bonk's Adventure better on Turbo-Grafx16 or NES? It seems that Bonk's Revenge and Air Zonk are only on Turbo Gafx16. So to play those games it seems like the Turbo system is a system to get.
i heard that legendary axe 1 and 2 were not included with the TG16 mini konami put out because the dev, victor musical industries, wanted nothing to do with their own game. how crazy is that?! it won awards in EGM magazine back then, it was GOTY! it was sorely missed on the tg16 mini. while legendary axe 2 is.. weird.. it has excellent music for sure. the supergrafx had some awesome arcade ports. a few are actually on the tg16 mini. the tg16 was a very capable system back then, too bad it didnt last. it didnt have much 3rd party support in the way of major devs like capcom and konami for example.
This console deserved a controller with more buttons. That was a major flaw... Also, its cpu can put on screen 482 different colors simultaniacely... more than the snes and much more than genesis... but you can't notice that on the games 🤔
