It's Ford. You will be lucky of it lasts 200 miles. Remember the Bronco Sport is just an Escape with a boxy body and it has had SIX recalls already. It's the exact same vehicle.
@@sho942000 your last sentence betrays you as having zero credibility. Btw, I had a 2010 Focus and it was a fantastic little car. Also, the F-150 has been the best selling vehicle for the past 30-years, so it would seem that a whole lot of people think they're plenty reliable.
@@sho942000 typical hater! Ford has the best selling truck in the world and best selling vehicle in the USA. I had a 1991 Ranger that now has over 500k with the second owner and still going.
Welcome Brian, great review up to the standards of the channel! I think the Maverick could be one of the best new cars in a long time an interesting alternative to a compact sedan or sub-compact/compact CUV based on price-point.
I went to a dealership in rural GA to order mine (10/15), MSRP + $100 deposit. When you can order one do some shopping around. If it's on a dealer's lot it's supply and demand = mark ups
Just dont pay over MSRP. Ford will obviously see the popularity of the truck and ramp up production because the are in the business of building vehicles to make money. Once they are pumping out mass numbers of these you shouldnt have a problem getting one. Also Ford gets the same profit reguardless. Dealers are the ones scaming people by trying to tack on extra fees. Just find a decent dealer and tell them up front when you order that you will not pay over MSRP and have them sign a priced invoice when placing the order for the vehicle. Dealers will have to comply because they need to sell a certain volume of vehicles to get more allocation from Ford. If they are marking up prices and not selling inventory fast enough, that product allocation goes top other dealers that are getting vehicles to customers and out on the road. People seem to have fomo (fear of missing out) these days when in reality, buying a brand new vehicle is absolutely not necessary. Dont base your money spending decisions based on other peoples bad choices. If you want one, you can get one at MSRP but you might have to be patient. Last thing we need is a snowball effect of people overpaying for things they dont need to the point that the prices get so out of control that its not financially feasable to be able to make a purchase when you want to.
@@dracer35 I visited a Ford dealer here in Atlanta to look at a Maverick. There was 4K of add ons. Called several dealers in the metro area and all had either a "market adjustment or add ons of 4/5K. Found a dealer in rural GA, MSRP + $100 deposit. Got a signed invoice of out the door price.
@@stevethomas760 Congrats! Sounds like you did the right thing for you and it worked out. I'm still looking but I'll most likely wait until Ford opens up ordering for the 2023 model year. I don't really need the truck since I already have multiple vehicles. The Maverick will take the place of my current gas getter car and my full size truck I use to haul my dirt bikes.
@@dracer35 I think you can't go wrong with looking at a '23. It will give Ford time to work out some bugs and do some tweaks for the '23. I own a '20 F150 short bed/reg cab. A good truck but more than I need every day. Hope it works out for you
Ford is right about their target market. I was considering Subaru Forester, CRV, CX5, RAV4 to purchase later this year until I saw the maverick. If they add the awd to the hybrid it is a no brainer that I will be going with the maverick.
@@Oosh21 Exactly. He spoke very smoothly and naturally, but his body and hand movements were sometimes distracting. Still, he had sensible and articulate comments, and that's the most important part.
Cars today are so expensive (not even accounting for the market conditions), so it is nice to see these go for a relatively affordable price. The next task would be if you can actually buy one without much fuss.
Wait 2 years and they’ll be no problem getting one. It’s quite normal for the new hot product to be in very short supply for its first year or so. And that’s in “normal” times.
I absolutely love my Maverick XLT 4k FWD Alto Blue! Got it for MSRP and never looked back. Needed the AWD for Michigan winters and the 4k tow package for a small camper in the future. Ford knocked this truck out of the park. At this point, just hoping it it stays reliable for years to come.
I've been wanting a Maverick since it was revealed. The Maverick is the only new vehicle I am interested. Though, I am bummed that AWD isn't even an option in the hybrid models. I would like to see if Ford makes the Maverick a PHEV. That would make me want one even more.
Ya, it was a massive fail that they didn't make a HYBRID AWD as well as a 6-FOOT BED option (still 4-door). THAT is the truck I want... Instead I'm STILL being forced to buy an expensive gas-guzzling Mid-Size.
@@leeuniverse It's more complicated changing bed length on a unibody truck. If it continues to be a hit they may do it, but it will be expensive. Offering AWD in the hybrid is easy in comparison.
You two guys make a good team! I love the Maverick. The only thing that would make it better is if it were as small as my 1997 Toyota Tacoma, which I continue to drive.
Okay, I was skeptical of Brian at first because I love Alex and he's the only car reviewer I follow, but he quickly won me over with "shoot the hooch." Welcome!
I started looking at the XLT Hybrid version and most of the dealer sites also include a $3,000 upcharge. With the whole idea being to try to save some money I will just wait until these upcharges go away down the road. Still not too many of these found on the road locally. I am lucky if I see 1 or 2 a week. Hopefully a year from now production will increase and an awd hybrid will start to be talked about.
I tried to order 2 hybrid lariats last month. Ford quit taking orders. Had to get a lariat trim to get adaptive cruise. Hopefully that will change. I would order a raw base if it had acc. It is bigger than it looks. The backseat leg and foot access getting in is small.
Just in time since All Sales on All Models and this Thursday the 27th of January. It was just announced this morning. No more Orders on the 2022 models till June 2022 and that will be for the 2023 models . You got yours in just in time. 😎👍👍
I have my lariat hybrid and I like it but it WILL NOT get 42 mpg in the city! 35.5 is what mine is getting and that’s great. Best mileage l have ever gotten with more than two wheels!
Today Ford announced they will stop taking Maverick orders until "2023" what ever that means. Another case of an excellent car now the equivalent of unobtainium. I wonder how the short supplies for the Mav will affect production of the Bronco & Escape PHEV (which is on my short list for my next car).
I've been driving trucks for 35 years and have always been bothered by the race for biggest/fastest. Am happy that economical has finally arrived. Looking forward to a reasonably priced AWD hybrid Maverick.
You are the only reviewer that ive seen put the cable for the tailgate in both semi raised positions. Using it to wrap around the latch for the higher position is new to me. Thank you Alex
I have a 2019 Colorado Z71 4WD crew cab that has been a great truck but I could easily live with a Maverick for the way I use a truck which is to haul random crap every once in a while, as a commuter and for infrequent two-track light off-roading. There are only two things that I would want on the Maverick that are not available now: 1) hybrid AWD/4WD availability and 2) SiriusXM availability on the XL and XLT trim levels. SiriusXM is available on the Lariat trim but I don't want anything more than an XLT.

Mine I got 2 weeks ago, alto blue, xlt, hybrid. I have 355 miles on mine, still have a half tank, but the trip say's I am averaging 45mpg. Gas is 4.29 right now, so.. I am pretty happy with it.
Great video as always. I'm still a couple years off from needing a new car, but unless something truly incredible comes along, I'm getting a Maverick. Here's to hoping there an AWD hybrid by then
In other words a standard two-door pickup. They only sell in modest numbers to fleet buyers, so profit margins are slim. Even fleet buyers tend to buy four-doors now. If they make a truck configured as you want it will almost certainly be a Ranger, as messing with a unibody vehicle is much more complicated.
I would be happier with a smaller back seat and longer bed to give a little more room for hauling dirtbikes while still having room in the back seat for my riding gear all while having that nice fuel economy of the hybrid.
Alex, Some day I hope you can afford a sheet of 'test' plywood to keep on hand at Alex on Autos World Headquarters. Brian, welcome again to Team A on A, which model of Durango did you order?😉
Great video! I bought the Santa Cruz. I think Both are nice small trucks… I drove both and the Cruz is way more comfortable and is truck enough for me. Self driving is next level which sold me! I like the new guy 👍🏼
Great job Brian! Please don't forget to comment on the materials - like if the door cards are soft touch or not. A lot of the interior commentary summarized things we could see on the video (like colors). I would recommend the voice track highlighting things that cannot be seen on video (like the feel of the materials) a bit more. Looking forward more from Brian.
Another great review. Brian, you mentioned two things close to my heart. Hooch and paddleboarding. If you've never done the upper Hooch it's worth a look . More whitewater but nothing crazy, class 2. (Wildwood Outfitters)
It’s amazing how Ford is hitting it out of the park with a lot of their new offerings. Hopefully it is close to being as reliable as a RAV4 Hybrid. Also, excellent review with Brian!
This powertrain is known for lasting 500k or more in taxis. That's 500k on intense fleet abuse, unless something massive went wrong with this trucks engineering and development process, it should be pretty rock solid.
@@KB-bh9hp are you referring to the C-Max and Fusion taxis? That’s a good point. Comparing hybrids, those had the Duratec 20 and this has the Duratec 25, but they probably have similar reliability. And the eCVT is almost identical to Toyota’s, unless they changed something recently.
@@garrettw99 No, those are reliable as well, but I'm talking about the escape taxi's. The ones that used this powertrain, while there have been some engineering updates, from my understanding, in it's most basic form, the powertrain in the maverick dates all the way back to like the '08 escapes.
@@KB-bh9hp Indeed. Here in San Francisco I see a lot of Escape hybrid cabs, even older ones, while other cars/crossovers they tried out are often gone. Cab companies don't keep unreliable vehicles or ones that are complicated and expensive to repair.
Great video! Thank you!! This is perfect for the city/suburban dwellers or empty nesters or even the soccer parents with a lot of sports equipment. This is not an off road, cattle herding, mountain climbing vehicle, it was never meant to be! Stick to the base model, skip all the add on *luxury* options nobody really uses, and you have an affordable useful runabout for everyday driving!!
A damped tailgate is the most overrated "feature" of a truck. If you are so frail that you can't lower a tailgate manually, should you really be loading heavy objects into the bed in the first place? What's next, a seatbelt that slides silently into the latch instead of clicking into place so it makes for a "quieter cab"?
Ive been thinking the same thing everytime I hear someone complain about the tailgate not being damped. Ive never one in all my years of owning trucks thought to myself, I need something to make this tailgate lighter/easier to open right before throwing heavy objects in the bed of my truck.
I've owned a Toyota Tacoma since 1994. Price vs. value is now not even close to the Maverick. I'm very seriously considering the Maverick as my next truck
Yeah, yeah, yeah, why are most trucks 4 doors? Two doors with with some lockable storage behind the seats would be a nice option. Every where you see all these 4 door trucks with one or two people in them, no one in the back seat. I could use a Maverick if it would hold items (yes sheets of construction material, 2 x 4 x 8 studs, etc) enclosed within the bed and then put a shell over the bed. This Maverick is indeed a crossover without an enclosed cargo space. But, nice review guys. 👍
Ford is wrong on the people interested in this truck, it is for those of us who want a small truck....I am not cross shopping an SUV or crossover. I would be happier if a single cab long bed version was available.....much much happier. Sadly I know it will never happen though so I might as well buy it as it is.
While I wait for my Maverick to arrive, I’ve tuned into several Maverick FB groups and specifically the hybrid ones. I’ve seen multiple Prius owners moving on to getting a Maverick Hybrid. It’s another super practical and economical choice for the eco minded.
@@KB-bh9hp yes front wheel drive does the job but having all wheel drive does make quite a difference in the quality of life during the snowy months of the year. It's a more refined and comfortable way of spending winter and dealing with snow and slippery roads
Also I'm not saying they should all be awd but offer it as an option so that people like me who live in areas where awd is useful can have the choice of a fuel efficient utility vehicule with awd instead of the 2l turbo awd that is basicaly the same as most other suvs
Regarding hybrid and AWD, I think Ford struck a good balance. Remember Ford was always trying to hit a price point and AWD was always going to add $1000-2000 to the base price. And the Turbo motor does deliver for the "I need to tow" crowd, where the hybrid just never would. Given the arbitrary limitation of offering only 2 engine options in such a low-end model, a FWD hybrid and AWD Turbo is a good compromise, especially since the FWD hybrid is hugely efficient AND delivers quite good payload numbers. It really only suffers when it comes to towing and if one lives in the harshest latitudes of the snow belt.
@@ATH_Berkshire a v6 awd will unfortunately never happen, they might use the 2.3l turbo engine from the ford ranger and that’s it. Or the same 2.3l with hybrid and a second electric motor at the rear axle.
I’m highly skeptical of any dealers actually having any available. I’ve been looking within 1000 miles of Charlotte, NC. Most listings aren’t actually cars available.
@@brandenflasch Yes, it's covered in my driveway with 25 miles on it. Not a scratch. Instead of waiting 18 months for delivery of a 2023, I can pick you up at the airport and you can go on an adventure across the country. See the velocity blue Mav on Craigslist in the 92646 zip code. My cell number is on the ad. Unlike a dealer ADM, my price is based on trading thousands in future gas costs and transferring that savings to you. If I keep it I will sell my Jeep instead. Vroom and other resellers are thousands higher fyi...
@@brandenflasch Not nuts, I will either sell the Mav or the Jeep to get down to one ins cost. Keep in mind the price is negotiable and it's not +10k after options, tax, lic, etc. I am also giving credit for new wheels and other items. Some people won't wait 18 more months to get a 2023 and bave to spend a lot more on gas. There are dealers getting +15k with several buyers wanting the same truck. I will let you know which one sells first.
Interesting comparison to the hybrid xl model: To get a 4cyl rwd double cab Tacoma sr5 for similar pricing you’d have to get something 2015 or older (for more comparable size too), with 60-100k miles. I see a lot of old Tacomas, Colorados and Rangers in my neighborhood. They’re all owned by city dwellers who don’t want something larger or more expensive. I think the crossover shoppers look at the maverick, but ppl who haven’t bought a truck in 10+ years because they’ve gotten too big and expensive are going to be maverick shoppers too.
Go Brian! You have big shoes to fill buddy. Looking forward to seeing you with your own quirky style. Just be you. Dont hide anything... dont put on a face. just be your self. Alex is Alex because he doesn't hide his nerdiness
Test drive the Maverick Hybrid XLT and was not impressed. It sits very low and doesn’t feel like sitting in an SUV or Truck height. Acceleration was meh…not the biggest of deals but the ride over a fairly standard crap Los Angeles road with some potholes revealed a bit of a crashy suspension where I felt way more of the road than I was expecting from a truck. Worse than my current Kia Niro EV feel of the road. Right after test driving the Maverick I got in a Ford Escape in highest trim and it was way more comfortable of a ride and not as bumpy of a ride. The next day I test drove the Hyundai Santa Cruz and it was so much nicer than the Maverick in every way but the traditional truck look of the Maverick. The Santa Cruz seats were very comfortable and the interior looks very modern. The ride height is very much SUV feeling as you sit higher up off the ground. It was quick and peppy and over bumps handled very well and relatively smooth meeting my expectations for a small Truck. Wish the Santa Cruz had a hybrid drivetrain but hands down the Santa Cruz was the more enjoyable vehicle. Also had a trunk in the bed and a built in Tano Cover that is excellent. Oh and the Santa Cruz is readily available. Good luck finding a Lariat Trim Maverick with the Hybrid Drivetrain.
@14:00 Ford and Hyundai are wrong and maybe that is why the demand is higher than expected. I am not interested in any of those vehicles and in fact, drive a late model wagon. I dislike SUVs and CUVs but I was immediately drawn to this vehicle due to its hybrid powertrain, size, utility, of course, price, etc. Fond memories of smallish pickup trucks in my high school and college years perhaps make me nostalgic for this recent incarnation of the small pickup and think Ford knocked out of the park with this. Let's hope the dealers don't get too greedy with the demand and supply issues.
My suspicion is that the hybrid drive train is actually more expensive to produce than the ecoboost and ford knows way less people would go for the ecoboost if the hybrid was offered with AWD
You can get one at MSRP. Long McArthur has a RU-vid channel you can order thru their dealership and they will ship to you. He has a Livestream later on tonight you should check it out. The deadline for Ecoboost is this Thursday
This is not a truck and will not replace many actual trucks. It will however replace MANY cross overs, minivans, and I think it could kill the sedan once and for all. At 20k it's basically impossible to beat. It's different, in a slew of compact crossovers it stands out. And in Person it's remarkably large. Best bang for buck out there right now.
Thanks, another great review Alex, I comparing the Maverick vs. Ridgeline & Ranger still shopping... Unfortunately I can't get into one of for a test drive!? thing I need is a good AWD Denver, CO commuter truck with payload for work tools🤔
Thanks for posting I presently own $150 Ford no longer need big gas guzzling truck just need something to haul bicycles kayaks home Depot perfect for me fuel mileage is fantastic now if I can ever get it
Watching this video. I just realized the Ford Maverick Hybrid would be perfect for me. But the one problem is I need AWD. My driving need is that I have to drive my own vehicle for work and my service territory is 100 to 150 miles. So I need a fuel efficient vehicle. And I am a big guy who works in the utility space, so I need a larger vehicle. This would be a great second vehicle and have a more luxury vehicle for my normal driver. My problem is I need AWD. My work requires driving in really bad weather conditions and remote sites. And if I can't get the fuel economy of a hybrid with AWD, it makes sense to think of other vehicles. But they're also more expensive. Maybe I'll do what Adam suggest and email ford and request AWD in the next hybrid model.
I'd like to see an AWD option for the hybrid. I also wanted to see the excellent AWD system of the Bronco Sport Badlands. I was really hoping that would be part of the FX4 package. Maybe they are saving that for a future Maverick Tremor package.
Maverick Hybrid functionality, design, and style is innovative and outstanding! Alex, I am sure you regret not custom-ordering your own. I ordered my XLT Hybrid in October, and I think I will be happy with this vehicle until the BEV Maverick is offered with a solar hood and roof. Hybrid Maverick order stampede is coming this August.
@@markmiller3279 I think Elon said something similar so this is what many believe, but even if it only provides the equivalent of one or two thousand miles from the sun per year, this is a "gimmick" that many consumers will gladly pay extra for, especially on a truck or van... would be especially useful/peace of mind for off grid adventures or when grid is down.
Order the Maverick now, since All Sales on the 2022 models Close this Thursday 1-27-2022 !!!! And then Sales should begin on the 2023 Models in June 2022 !!!
Not until Aug 16. Now that millions know about this truck, my bet is 2023 MY sells out in just a few days even if there is a big price increase due to inflation. Order by tomorrow to lock in 2022 price and to get ahead of that long line. Eco mpg hwy not much different than hybrid even with more passing power and capability.
Hi Alex. I live in Campbell, CA and started watching your channel last year. I really enjoy your thorough, no BS reviews. I just bought a Maverick Hybrid myself and love it. One question, what octane did you use while testing the Maverick? The manual says 87, but for better performance it recommends 91.
I was lucky to sit on the ecoboost Maverick before it got sold for $7K above MSRP the next day. I love the Maverick but I will not pay above MSRP. If Maverick mission is to be honest and practical vehicle then I also expect the same about its buying experience.
It's overall a cheap new vehicle, that's why I ordered one many many months ago. Yet as of today they are unobtainium to order. Appreciate the very high quality picture which helps show just how ugly that Lariat trim is, and that cheapo vinyl as well.
Can I buy that from you??? Seriously...it's the color I want and while I was shooting for the XLT, the Lariat is fine. Now if Ford can just make enough of them.... I am so happy for this truck as I never thought I could afford anything close to a new truck as most priced around $50k with the options I want. Hoping to get an order in on this or the 2023 model run.
Wait, I have a new VB hybrid that I will sell to you! Don't want to pay another insurance premium. You can drive this one now while waiting the 18 months to get a 2023.
If you are using payload / towing as a discriminator between the Maverick and Santa Cruz, the DCT in the Hyundai is a disqualifier IMO. That trans isn't going to hold up to towing/offroading.
yeah it's great but nowhere to buy one(with the hybrid engine). u have to wait for more than six months or pay 10 grands market adjustment (remember it has msrp arround 20 grands). that's absolutely ridiculous.
Looked at one today. Having no sliding window is a deal breaker. San Jose isn't much of one either. I want a Ranger but smaller and efficient. Too cheap
Brake distance is too long. My `13 f150 stops in 132 ft, being almost 9 years older and a lot heavier, yet still 3 ft shorter. In 2022, a 60-0 around 120ft should be pretty standard. My 2017 sonata hybrid can stop in 119 ft also wearing a set of Eco focusing tires.
