Just seeing this video. I loved "The Day the World Came to Town" and saw "Come From Away" last year. The print version that I bought is a revised edition with a new afterward published in 2021, so it does have updated information on where people are now.

A big thank you to you both for providing such an entertaining and informative video. As a result of which, I went out and bought a copy of Deaf Utopia. Such a great book. It was so good that I finished reading it this morning. It was certainly an eye opener and in future, I shall treat Deaf people with much more respect and understanding. From an earlier video, I purchased When the World Came to Stay. Again , what a lovely book that made me realise that there are decent people out there, full of love, hope and giving. However, on a down side, I feel your videos should contain a Government Wealth Warning as my bank balance takes a nose dive every time I watch your videos. 😀

Ma & Me is slated for March in my Lesbian+ book club; I’m really looking forward to it. I’m happy to see Paying the Land, Gender Queer, and Brown Girl Dreaming among these books that you enjoyed most. My favourite nonfiction in 2022 is Spring Cannot Be Cancelled: David Hockney in Normandy.

I loved seeing your opinions on these books. I definitely plan to read The Day the World Came to Town this year. I also plan to read the only Annie Erneaux book I have which is The Years. Hopefully it will be as good as Happening.

I've been wanting to learn sign language for a long time. I'm trying to learn Italian at the moment so not sure adding another language will make things difficult for me. I really need to get into Annie Ernaux's novels. She's been on my TBR for a while. I'll definitely be reading them in French though. Noted for Happening or L' Événement! Great lists! Happy new year! We tried to learn Italian first for our trip (not very successfully) and delayed sign language until we got back because we were also worried about trying to learn two languages at once. I definitely recommend Happening and can't wait to try more Ernaux!

If you are looking to do a video about true crime books, I highly recommend "Blood Will Tell, a True Story of Deadly Obsession", by Joseph Bosco. The blood part of the title refers to the science of blood spatter. I met the author around the time of the OJ murder trial, about which he also wrote a book.

Great lists! I’ve only read two of them, In Cold Blood (a million years ago, so intense) and 84 Charing Cross Road (I adored it). I definitely want to read some others on your lists. My top non-fiction books from last year. I didn’t read all that much non-fiction last year, but everything I read was very good. Great catch up for last year’s nonfiction guys! I read so many memoirs, 54, that I broke them out into their own category. Brown Girl Dreaming was a reread, but was still my number one, just a perfect, beautiful, heartbreaking book. 84 Charring Cross Road was number two. One of the first books I read this year was The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street, which is basically Helene’s travel journal to England with the launch of publication for 84 in the UK. It’s great fun too and worth the read. With your love of Come From Away, I think you would find Only Plane in the Sky, the oral history of 9/11 of great interest. The audiobook is award winning and fantastic. I did it as my anniversary read last year and was an empowering experience, at a time when it usually feels devastating. My top three of nonfiction were Say Nothing, Patrick Radden O’Keefe’s masterpiece on The Troubles, All Thirteen, about the Thai boy’s soccer team trapped in the underground mountain caves and the classic Letter’s to a Young Poet, by Rilke. What’s exciting about the Letters, is it’s a new edition since they found the actual corresponding letters by the young poet so you have both sides of the conversation now. Forever I’ve read how influential they have been on writers and artists, but I’m glad I waited until now to have both sides of the conversation, just a remarkable interaction.

I listened to the audio of The Only Plane in the Sky for the BookTube Prize two years ago (I think). It was an incredible reading experience but I had to work my way through it slowly because I cried uncontrollably for most of the audio. I think I'm going to try Duchess after I read Charing Cross Road because I would love to read about her visit to England. You had quite a solid list of favorites for 2022! I need to read Say Nothing in particular.

@@SupposedlyFun Say Nothing was fantastic, but I must say having read We Don’t Know Ourselves first, one of the NYT top ten books, gave me a more solid background and preparation to better understand the whole context of The Troubles. The author is an investigative journalist as well, but he’s actually Irish and uses his own memoir to tell the story of Ireland emerging as a modern country. So if you have the inclination it’s a great read up to Say Nothing.
