Great list -- I'm a longtime fan of 84 Charing Cross Road, plus Countess of Bloomsbury Street and Q's Legacy. Modoc is on my all time top ten non-fiction list - I laughed and cried and nashed my teeth as I read. Of Time and Turtles was a present - reading starts tonight. Looking forward to The Guncle and The Ship Beneath the Ice. My top non-fiction book for 2023 was my first read of the year and it never budged- Eating to Extinction by Dan Saladino followed closely by To Speak for the Trees by Diane Beresford-Kroger and Fen, Bog & Swamp by Annie Proulx. My thoughts - can I start 2024 with equally good books. I am a big non-fiction reader (86%). Here is to peace, calm, and reading joy through out 2024.

Thank you so much for turning me on to Sy Montgomery. I took your advice to listen to it as an audiobook. I’m on the final chapter of “How to Be a Good Creature” and it’s been an emotional ride from smiling and laughing to sobbing to feeling that my heart would burst from the love between Sy and the animals. I plan to read more Sy Montgomery but I need a break to recuperate.😂 Moving on now to “Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands” by Kate Beaton. When I read the blurb, I thought, “Why would I want to read anything about the oil sands?” (insert snore here.) However, I’m glad I took a chance on it, and I’m glad that you enjoyed it, too. I read about 50% fiction and 50% non-fiction so I appreciate you including this segment on non-fiction.

Since the pandemic started, i have found an increased interest in nonfiction... mostly history and biography. So thank you for having this list. I will read Sy Montgomery... those subjects sound wonderful. Also.... 84 Charring Cross Road has been one of my favorite movies of all time for decades! I also read the book and it was charming... in fact, i watched the movie again on Christmas!

27:54 What poignant moment in the video Greg when you said that reading of time and turtles helped heal your shell. That was a beautiful way to describe the restorative splendor of reading a book by Sy Montgomery. I have only had the good fortune of listening to her on my local Boston public radio station but I totally get her love of animals and her kind-heartedness through her interviews. I have started the soul of an octopus recently.

You mention fun home and Persepolis in this video and I got really excited! I read both on the request of my dept head last year and we taught Persepolis to our advanced English students and they loved it!!!! It ties in well with 10th grade history standards and I can always work it into English standards. I need to teach this again this year!

I love that you did a non-fiction video this year! I like to read non-fiction and I also find it hard to compare fiction and non! Of Time and Turtles just showed up on Libby! We rescue turtles from our busy neighboring road on occasion, nobody has been hit yet, although the poor turtles are terrified as I move them. My favorite nonfiction books were Monster by Claire Dederer, (I would be really curious about your thoughts on this book, especially given your reviews on authors with problematic views.) Our Migrant Souls by Hector Tobar, The Woman They Could Not Silence by Kate Moore and Solito by Javier Zamora. Thank you for the suggestions, I hope to try Modoc. It sounds right up my alley.

I adore Sy Montgomery and her wonderful, magical books. The way she talks about animals and her experiences, she's my soulmate :). I've read 5 of her books in quick succession and I have you to thank for bringing her work to my attention. Of Time and Turtles is next up :). I have a recommendation for Joel, since he's enjoyed two other books about ships and human endurance: Madhouse at the End of the Earth: The Belgica's Journey into The Dark Antarctic Night. I read it in 2022 and it was an incredible read, kept me at edge of my seat. It's hard to read at some points (animal cruelty), but it was riveting.

Last year, I read (and enjoyed) The Soul of an Octopus, at your recommendation. I totally agree on her writing style and clear love for the natural world. But, I was so disappointed that there was only one point in the book questioning the practice of capturing wild octopuses for exhibit - and it wasn’t from Sy, but from one of the leads from the exhibition to capture a new octopus when one dies. I couldn’t get past her not addressing this issue, so have avoided her others. I’m wondering since the others are about “rescue” organizations, maybe this isn’t an issue, but would love your thoughts on this. In Souls, the capture and containing in very small environments was purely for the enjoyment of humans, which felt icky to me.
@SupposedlyFun
@SupposedlyFun 7 месяцев назад
I’m far enough away from reading the book that I don’t quite remember, but I do remember her talking about octopuses seeming happy in their enclosures and with the interaction they get from their handlers. I think that’s what helped me not worry about it (I generally don’t like zoos for the reasons you outline). But the other books I’ve read of hers are more about healing and releasing, so maybe they would be more to your liking.

I am currently reading The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street and agree, Greg, that it doesn't really capture the magic of 84, Charing Cross Road, but it is still delightful. What I wouldn't give to talk books with Helene Hanff while knocking back martinis! Wondering if Joel has read David Grann's The Wager? I think he'd like it given his admiration for Endurance. Cheers!

And I bought myself Of Time and Turtles as a post-Christmas, pre-birthday present to myself, so I’ll be getting to that too! I didn’t read a ton of non-fiction last year, but there were so really great ones. I’m already into my third non-fiction of 2024, so perhaps there will be more this year. Here’s my best non-fiction of 2023: The Dutchess of Bloomsbury Street - Helene Hanff Nineteen Seconds - Louise Beech It’s A Love Story - Shirlie and Martin Kemp Standing My Ground - Harry Dunn Pandora’s Jar: Women in the Greek Myths - Natalie Haynes Empire of Pain - Patrick Radden Keefe
