I was telling someone the other day that there was an era of time when you would turn the radio on and back to back you would hear Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, R. Kelly, Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey, Mary J Blige, Michael Jackson, Jodeci, SWV, Aaliyah and the list goes on. What a time man!!!
The soprano was definitely SOPRANOOOOOOOO'INGGGG!!! Coko has such a magical and distinctive tone and timbre to her voice, so much so that anytime she does a run or a slide, it gives me goosebumps
Coko is a vocal beast! She is definitely underrated vocally. Her runs are impeccable, spot on and unique. She carried that whole group. Her name doesn't come up enough when people talk about the greatest singers ever.
Coko really does have a platinum voice. She carried the team with that voice. Nobody sounded like her at that time. I wish we got to see more of her single career
She has an awesome voice. But she didn’t carry the team. They are all different ranges and blend very well together. Thats why they work better as a group.
If anyone knows anything about Cheryl, you know Lady Tibba put her stamp on it. Her mom is a gospel singer whom like Whitney started teaching Coko to sing at the age of 3 in church. So when SWV broke in their 20s, Coko was already a beast. She still has the range she’s just older now. Why people expect singers to live in a time capsule? She’s 52 now. She’s not going to sound how she did in her 20s.
The secretary at my grade school used wear her nails super long like that when I was a kid in the 80's.. I used to wonder how the hell she typed like that!! 😂

She has an amazing range but she doesn’t have a whistle register🤷🏽♂️ The song you provided doesn’t show her hitting whistle note (look’s like your not the true music lover due to you not knowing about vocal ranges) so my comments gonna remain here. Yes, I mos definitely agree that Ms. Coko was that Vocal Beast and definitely made the group a success but listen to Ms. Leelee's ablib & run she quickly did @ 0:55. I really do wish that Taj & Leelee was given more leads cause their voices were slept on.
@@nickhudson53 lol Mariah’s voice placement is not a alto she said that in an interview and she is wrong no voice teacher or anybody with kind of training would classify her as an alto she is not coloratura soprano is closer to what she is possibly a light lyric coloratura soprano due to airy sound she sings with
True Queen every time I see Coko I think of my mom she thought she was the 4th member of SWV I can only imagine her in high School before I was born in 94 😭🖤

2008 was definitely my favorite. Her voice was 100% matured and perfected by that time period and she definitely couldn’t wait to let loose at the 2008 BET Awards

such an amazing voice. its not that she "carried" the group. The group backed her up with great harmony. Coko definitely not talked about enough when it comes to great singers tho

I never knew she was the female vocalist on “Men in Black.” Her voice was all and up through the 90s. Coko and Tamar were the best sopranos. And before someone say’s Mariah. Mariah is not a soprano. She’s more a controalto. She sing out of her range that’s why her voice is basically gone.
Mariah instrument is gifted, she never called herself a soprano. Her voice was powerful but I always felt she’s sounded like a flute/ songbird with a deep low register with a powerful tone and mixed with just a pretty timbre and her whistle can go high. She’s not a pop singer even though she was marketed as one she’s more of a contemporary r&b, ballad, and gospel type singer. She don’t have an alto like a Toni or Amy Winehouse them did, hers more sweeter feminine like. She cannot sing super high notes like a Chaka Khan from the chest who is a human trumpet/saxophone (that’s fine). I feel once she started doing that, that’s when she strained her voice big time imo. So then she became airy & thin but relied heavily on whispering but the power was still there in the 2000s. It’s just she overworked, was stressed, not vocally training, and blew her pipes after a while. Unfortunately her songs are hard to sing which she could barely do today. She was a technical singer who sings in all sorts of highs/low with melisma like crazy but that will damage your voice over time without proper training. She made herself sing in a higher sound but she’s a alto overall which she confirmed this. You saw her voice difference on the song with Whitney, Whitney Houston was a mezzo soprano or like a spinto soprano with a rich clear powerful tone that not many has had at all, she ruined her voice with smoking but had she didn’t her soprano would’ve still been strong maybe deeper because of age but it would’ve been still powerful before her passing. Two different tones, I don’t expect Mariah to sing like these soprano singers like Coko, Chaka, Patti, Jennifer Hudson, or Whitney. Each of these ladies have beautiful tones with gifted instruments. They’re not flat singers or struggling voices or monotone singers.
@@DAYSTAHR I wasn’t really trying to hate. Respect her 100% I just know that when you think of the 90s and Sopranos people will obviously say Mariah but she’s not. And her voice really is almost gone because of her singing out of her range. It wasn’t hate just an opinion.
@@Wealthismybirthright agreed 100%. Whitney and Beyoncé are the most controlled mezzo sopranos probably ever. I would compare Mariah to almost like Adele but Mariah’s range is absolutely outstanding.
