Bowie's blistering sarcasm is legendary. I met him a few times, once at a NYC club where he was casually smoking a the bar. Some girl next to me tried to light up and security said "you can't smoke here" and the girl pointed to Bowie and said "but he's smoking!" (obviously this girl lived under a rock or something) and Bowie quickly responded "Rock god, fringe benefits"
I worked at a small repair shop in Woodstock New York. There was a small deli on route 212 which leads you right into Main Street of Woodstock. He used to sit in that little deli, and have lunch with whatever lady friend he had at the time, casually enjoying his lunch, making conversation with his lady at the table, just a regular guy on a regular day. Don’t even get me started about Levon Helm!😂
One time while he was in Australia He went to a local bar all alone no security or anything A friend of mine sat down to order a drink, they started chatting and ended up partying till early hours of the morning, going from club to club Very down to earth man, How fortunate was my friend RIP David ❤🙏
This comment reminds me of a scene in the original running man movie where one of the stars of the show punches a fan. The fan was delighted 😂 “” yeahhhh , he punched me !!!! “
I hope everyone who discovers Bowie after his passing delves into his insanely prolific career. He wasn't just a legend, he was a musician's musician, a bandleader and an immensely talented melody and lyric writer. I can think of no other lead singer and writer who managed to collaborate so successfully with so many different musicians, and yet grab gold the majority of the time.
So many phases, so many very distinct Bowie sounds. He’s Starman, he’s white funk, he’s collaborating with Trent Reznor…and that’s just his music. He was a fascinating human
Would love to see the outtakes form the "chubby little fat man" scene. Gervais is notoriously bad at not staying in character but makes up for it by having the best laugh.
When the whole crowd joined in the song, you can see it on his face that Ricky is actually thrilled to be sitting there hearing Bowie sing the lyrics he wrote. So in a way, he did break character. 4:37
@@gurgy3 A loose interpretation of him "breaking character" since Gervais's character shares many of the same traits as Ricky, which is common in many of Rickys series. He stayed in character because he is part of that character in essence.
Oh man that’s awesome. Got a chance to meet him once as well and he was the nicest person. I couldn’t believe how down to earth he was. When he passed away that was one sad day.
Back in my days working as a journalist in Australia I met and interviewed him Bowie one-on-one when he was passing through Sydney. He wasn't there to promote a concert and I was the only journalist in Sydney to get with him on that trip. The 'interview' ended up just two guys chatting about any and everything. He was a truly lovely man and I admit when I heard of his death there were tears in my eyes and I was really affected.
The thing about David Bowie is that for a start, he was a very talented musician but he always came across as modest and polite the kind of combination that the English like and respect. Personally, I have no time whatsoever for "Celebrity Culture", its an oxymoron but I felt a genuine pang of sadness for his family when he passed away. A very unusual and likable man
@kkh369 believe me when I say I commented with a very straight face, grow up and and accept you missed with this one. And don’t attempt taking morale high ground on the internet, the fact me and you replied only highlights how pathetic we really are.
This shows ,what I always suspected of Bowie. He had a real sense of humour and never stopped being David Jones despite numerous image changes . He was well aware of his critics as much as he was his fans and didn't work against the media, he played along with them , he goaded them from before he was even famous as a musician. Real integrity and some true classic records.
My dad met Bowie working on a movie. What an interesting chat it must have been between two lads originally from southeast London. Anyway, he got a signed photo for my aunt who was a huge fan. Amusingly, her brother's name is ... David Jones. ; - )
I always thought Bowie was interesting, but never really listened to his work other than the hits, than one day I found myself in a rather tough spot and I wasn't working, so I had a lot of time on my hands and I just started listening to Bowie. I was just so pulled into his gravitational field, so to speak, and I like to think he really helped me to get through some shitty times and move forward as a person. Its difficult to explain, but I feel this real admiration for him that I have never felt for any celebrity before or since. I was genuinely sad when I heard of his passing and just when home and listened to Black Star and thought you beautiful genius.
That is great dude. I have always said that Rock and Roll Suicide saves lives and is probably the greatest album closer of all time. Not to downplay the rest of his discography which is great but that pacticular song has saved my ass more than once. A beuautiful genius indeed.
@@gabrielpetricevic9306 exactly that, also saved me more than once, rebel, rebel always gets me up and going , can't dwell on death, look at what he left us with,🤜🤛 from dudetx
David Bowie was a genius. There are no words to describe my admiration for him. I loved Ricky Gervais, but now I respect him even more. I guess brilliant people recognise each other.
Back in the later 1960's, I was happily watching David Bowie singing as Ziggy Stardust on TV. I was a very early fan! He was in full Ziggy attire, flaming red hair, tight jumpsuit, giant shoulder pads and platform shoes! My Dad who was a very hard working carpenter by trade was sitting in his easy chair reading his newspaper. I asked him what he thought of Ziggy and he looked up from his paper, watched for a bit and said "if he can make a living doing that rather then banging his brains out with a hammer, then good for him!' My Dad was born in 1914 and I loved how open minded he was! I've never forgotten that! I next saw David Bowie in the early 70's at Radio City Music Hall, he was no longer Ziggy. Great concert!
I love how when Bowie was talking about the "Extras" scene he was still taking the piss (out of himself more than Gervais)..."It was fun working with Rick, showing him pointers, maybe new ways of approaching comedy..."
It took Bowie so so long to actually make it in the music business...he just kept going and kept believing in himself...he worked very hard and took many blows before his genius was recognised...i feel this is why he remained quite down to earth and could get on a level with all people.
John Lennon helped him--especially with dealing with the hateful side of fame (and why they wrote that song "Fame" together). They were friends. Bowie was the one who went to comfort Yoko when John was murdered. THAT info made me cry. Yes, I remember the exact moment when I heard about John, and also when I heard about Bowie. I had the great honor to have seen Bowie's "comeback" concert in 1983 (5 years off due to cocaine) at the US Festival--I went to see him specifically, wasn't sure what to expect. It turned out to be one of the highlights of my life, thankfully "Heroes" & the entire concert is on YT ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QYyWKxH6JSM.html Oddly enough the reason I watched this video is because "Ghost Town" is one of my all time favorite movies (the only previous exposure I had to RG) so I was quite curious to find out about this friendship--it turned out to be an amazing gem!
@@lauraturner4216 Yes... 💙 but i think he is talking at the beginning of bowie's career, Lennon and Bowie worked together when Bowie was already famous, he is talking about the beginning when it took him 10 years to get a hit (space oditty) and went through several folk bands ... And then created the Ziggy persona.
Took long to make it in the music business? Are you even serious? When Space Oddity became a hit, he was only 22. Is that long? Seriously? For comparison, take, I dunno, John Scatman. The man became famous when he was 52 years old. Talk about long.
@@sxturnx_8767 i was just about to say that it's a cool profile picture too lmao. The beatles aren't my favourite and i prefer pink floyd however the combination looks pretty sick
Damn I miss Bowie. He was such a HUGE part of my teenage years, when he died it was like a little piece of me also died. I've never felt like this with any other celebrity death.
So true. My mother broke the news to me as if my brother had died! I cried for weeks. My neighbors were bringing meals by & checking on me. It was hard.
I met him on the subway one evening. He was holding a small green ukulele and was balancing a tambourine between his knees. He was listening in on everyone's conversations. When someone said something be thought was idiotic, he'd do a little song with those words as lyrics. How we all laughed at those people. Living on Mars was very boring at the time, just rocks and sand and not much to do, so it cheered us all up. True story, definitely happened.
Yeah, thank god Picasso was 19th .... - I mean, come on - i love Bowie, he was the - maybe - greatest in pop, but there are Schönberg, Picasso, Xenakis, Spinal Tap ....
"he was always there for people who think they were a little bit strange or weird or different"- i can't possibly love david bowie more. what an amazing human being before anything else, before him being a true rockgod
He was for ALL people. He was universal. I believe he was a saint as strange as that sounds.Meaning his spirit was open to the full gamut of beings and he saw the true value of human beings regardless of how different or straight they may be.
David Bowie died, my friend & I worked together that day painting a house, listening to his music all day. That night my daughter was born. Mixed bag of a day
then because we are really all from the same point in time the exact same moment, a little bit of his soul/spirit maybe with your daughters birth. a little part of a transition, since we really are truly connected spiritually..
you could clearly see in david’s interviews that he was very intelligent. he’s one of those gems that was very misunderstood and seen as “weird” in the public eye, but in reality he was a very genuine, humble man.
I've always considered him one of the most intelligent people in rock & roll. He kept things fairly simple a lot of the time because pop music demands it, but read the lyrics to the album "Diamond Dogs" or any of the pre-Ziggy albums. He was an extremely literate, bright guy.
Although no doubt meant with the best of intentions you dishonour him by referring to him as "Sir David Bowie". He was certainly offered a knighthood (in 2003) but expressly declined it stating "I would never have any intention of accepting anything like that. I seriously don't know what it's for. It's not what I spent my life working for.". So he emphatically and deliberately remained plain old Mr Bowie (or Mr Jones) - no (British) gongs, no BS (but he did accept an arts and culture gong from the French Government it was not one which carried with it a title).
Good job you didn't meet him then cus he Would have said hello and you would have dribbled, stuttered and looked daft. Be grateful for what you didn't have, friend.
David adored comedy and comedians. He never took himself too seriously, and was the ultimate fan of other artist's work. Those of us who love and admire him regard him as a friend. He embodies the pinnacle of the Artist's role.
Being born in 81', I have been lucky to share this world with so many great artists, many being British. Bowie, Freddie Mercury , Jimmy Page, Ozzy, Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, Dio and so many more. Bowie like Freddy, will always live on, as legends never die!
It took me so long to grow to his work. I wasn't really able to appreciate him and his work till my late 30's. But then suddenly I started to get him and I became a die hard fan. His work does so much for me. I adore his humor in interviews. His magnetism is mesmerising.
To be fair heres a challange...read the lyrics and you tell me you could sit and write something like it in an hour flat...pick another planet think about your life and colors and emotions and friend and put pen to paper...I bet you could write a life on venus in no time
No wonder these two got on so well both creative and think out the box. They say never meet your heroes but I wouldn’t mind meeting either of these. Sadly my one regret is not seeing David Bowie live 😢 RIP rock god
I served him and Iman once in a restaurant in LA, such a classy couple, super polite and Iman was just as exquisite or maybe more, what a human, thanks you for share your love with the world, and Ricky is just so natural, Number 1
We lost Bowie who was a decent self deprecating human being with immense talent, sense of fun charisma and personality the real deal, a massive void after his passing.left behind.
Self-deprecating? Don't know where you get that part from. The kind of humor is the worst anyway, it offends your own soul whether you realise it or not.
What I love about the British is they are very self-deprecating in their humor and outlook on the often serious business of living. They make fun of themselves. The lesson? Don't take yourself or life so seriously. It's all over so quickly anyway. We need more of that outlook here.😊
Stupid fun trivia fact. I got to play the 12 string acoustic that Bowie used on the intro to Major Tom. He gave it to a friend of mine who played guitar for him, a lot of guitar!
David Bowie saved my life back in my teen years. The first time I heard his voice, that was all it took for me. Ricky saved my life by the laughs, smiles. and hearing about his cat also saved my life.
if you were ever lucky enough to be up close at his shows in the 70's-90's he smiled and laughed so much on stage, will adore him, his talent, his choice of bandmates, wish his family well, always. peace. Great Piece Ricky Thank-you. Also Thank-you for the Up-Load BoH.
Ugh Bowie was so great. He's my hero too, and in a way he did save my life on multiple occasions. His music has a way of making you feel that at least one other person knows what you're going through. And he's actually quite brilliant at deadpan comedy. I wish he did more of that in some way. I kinda wish we got to know him a bit more, but I respect that he didn't have his life all out there for all to see. When I found out he died, and left an album of music as a "parting gift" for his fans...wow. I was speechless. He turned his death into art, and was thinking of the people who loved him and didn't even know him. And it broke my heart to find out that he still had music he wanted to finish and wasn't quite ready to go...I kinda wish his producer never told us that in a way, but in another way I'm glad...because it showed he is human after all, just like all of us. The world feels a little more empty without him in it. But that's life I guess. People come and go, but he was one of the people able to leave a legacy behind that will live on forever. He is immortal in our hearts and thoughts.
@Darren Gregg Yeah, it's disgusting how great he was lol. But I'm not sure that it exclusively means that, I just wrote the sound I'd make if I was talking more or less, and didn't know how else to word it
I wonder how it feels to be on top of the world. When you are Ricky Gervais, however rich or successful you are, you are still looking up at David Bowie. But when you are David Bowie, there is nobody above you.
Believe it or not, I've been told that before, "How does it feel to be the most gorgeous woman in the room?" ... no - I didn't sleep with him but it was a good line.
Such a heart warming and enchanting story... The time has arrived when so many of our Heroes are leaving us. We dare not to guess who will be next, while our own reflection stares back at us from the mirror, a little more wrinkled and grey at each passing year. David Bowie will be sorely missed, he came from a time in our lives when we all thought that we were immortal, encapsulated in some state of permanent youth. How wrong could we have been. Celebrate the lives of our Heroes and what they gave to us, be it music, comedy or acting. and prey that the the lights on our own personal stage continue to burn for just a little longer.
David Bowie, a rock star, a star itself, an alien and the Goblin King. May you rest in peace as we on the green earth hearts still breaking into pieces when we recall your name. May them in heaven let your creative mind creates another masterpiece.
I am a huge David Bowie fan. RIP. Ever since I was a young teenager. Saw him 4 times. I also a fan of Ricky. Even more so after his monologs at the Golden Globes.
Even my preteen kids cried when Bowie died. They grew up watching labyrinth and became interested in his music and life. He was a special guy who transcends the decades.
Bowie's deluded celebrity who thinks he's funny in the Extras BTS is one of my favourite comic performances I have ever watched. Merchant and Gervais have him a role where he was hilarious, and he then tops it in the DVD extras.
My mate used to be the chef in the Gurnards Head hotel in Cornwall, he was at the bar and got tapped on the shoulder "someone to meet you" David Bowie" he was a massive fan and completely gobsmacked.
This is so good, I can hardly contain my delight. Two absolute geniuses in their fields just taking the pxxx and having fun with it. Bowie's deadpan delivery is brilliant. But the line 'David Bowie : Rock God' total mic drop.
When I was five, I watched labyrinth then my dad played his music and I fell in love. I'm fifteen now and his music still holds a peice of my heart. When I was little, I'd tell people that when I grew up, I'd marry bowie.
Always got excited when they announced Bowie would be on Conan that week. Loved seeing them together because David actually looked comfortable with Conan. So hilarious and some legendary musical appearances thrown in for good measure 👏👏
First time I seen David Bowie was at the Apollo in Glasgow in 1978 - seeing your hero appear on stage is a feeling I'll NEVER forget !. Thank you, David - for all the beautiful things in life !
Mr Jones, what a guy. I loved his down to earth humour, and the feeling that he seemed so approachable. A shining light in my crappy teenage years, and sorely missed 😢
When of the greatest people who ever lived, and certainly one of the most influential in the music world. So great that he also had a fantastic sense of humor!!
I love Gervais and Bowie. Bowie walking around with Peter Frampton like it's no big deal and then everyone totally doesn't care about Frampton! Saw them both on the Bowie Glass Spider Tour in the 80s. Was incredible.
Brilliant! “Pug, pug, pug, pug” I loved Bowie and Ricky in this!! What a great sense of humor Bowie had and Ricky is hilarious as always! I remember watching this episode of Extras and loving every moment of it! Thanks for sharing ❤️ both legends.
Bowie also called MTV out about not playing music videos of people like Prince and Rick James. MTV said middle America would reject them. It’s a great interview
Love this. Met DB once, a long time ago, at my work, he was the most lovely and sweet man and you would think he would be tired and perhaps a bit annoyed after travelling a lot(this was when he was on tour) But no,couldn't be more of a gentleman than David Bowie. He is missed so badly, and when I think of that there will never be any new music from him ever again, it makes me so freakin sad. He was one of A kind!
