Before Michael Jackson, there was Jackie Wilson, one of the greatest entertainers of all time. Michael Jackson called Jackie his biggest influence and a leader in the business. Jackie Wilson set the bar of what a complete entertainer should be and many of the black entertainers who came after him, emulated Jackie's style from James Brown, The Temptations, to The Jackson Five, Michael Jackson, and to Usher.
Jackie had a gifted, versatile voice, he could sing soul, pop, blues, jazz, and even opera. A gifted dancer as well, who popularized spins, knee drops, and a host of creative dances, that people do to this day.
Jackie Wilson was the complete entertainer...talent, good looks, charm, sex appeal.

Why doesn't anybody have talent like this anymore? Notice that Jackie didn't have to take anything off, didn't have to grab his genitals, and didn't have to "twerk" on anything or anyone. He just flat out kills it with that voice. He was a beautiful and talented gentleman. I miss him.

He and his peers like Sam Cooke and Lou Rawls started in the gospel circuit where it was often just you and your audience. No musicians, no mike. You had to articulate to be understood, you had to develop range to be interesting. Today everyone relies on studio gimmicks.

Not enough words to describe how great Jackie Wilson was! He inspired a generation of both black & white singer/entertainers. So many of todays so called singers could learn ALOT from Jackie Wilson! He had soul, he had rhythm, was a great singer & dancer and of course very charismatic! Sorry i never did get to see him perform, died way before his time. You just don't see great talents like this any more. YES, Michael Jackson (RIP) was inspired by Jackie. Rest in peace Jackie and THANK YOU for the tremendous and wonderful legacy of music you have given us! Lonely Teardrops.....................

Pamela Williams Jackie Wilson AKA "Mr. Excitement" was a human being just like you and me. Therefore he did scandalous things throughout his life. However, during the 50's & 60's media were more "kinder and gentler" towards entertainers.

@@ddlee202257 I gave up thinking about whether my fav entertainers were good people or not a while ago, because as you say, they are human, and being starts their mistakes can be bigger than the rest of us. Jackie really did not lead a good life, it was, perhaps partially through his own fault, and partially not, he led a tragic life. Probably the saddest of which is falling on stage (he was likely high) hitting his head, going into a coma for almost 10 years, becoming brain dead until he died around 39 or 40. ANd his record company totally screwed him. Still there has to be something in people so talented as Jackie that makes him such a complete artist. He is amazing, my favorite.

People compare MJ and Jackie, as a compliment, and because they were two of the greatest of all time. They both were innovative, original, masters of the stage. Both had the power to amaze you. They both had energy, rawness, and passion. They could just mesmirize you. It's not fair to pit both against one another when it comes to who's the greatest. MJ adore Jackie, and Jackie would have loved MJ. They both were of different eras and every era has their greats. No one can doubt both were greats

My idol, and I saw him many times on stage in Los Angeles as kid, how I was able to see him at 9 and 10 years old is a mystery to me, but I did. I was driven to see him, and I watched the women go mad. I realized my calling, and did become a singer. I met him as an adult in the late 70's at the airport in los angeles. i drove cabs while going to college. We picked up fares getting off the planes. I was not first up in line to be his driver however. I saw him dressed in all white, with his wife and son, them all in white, and like they stepped out of a cloud. I was speachless, but I said Jackie!, He reached and shook my hand, put is arm around my shoulder, while his wife and son walked to the cab that would take them. He talked me, and I a grown young man I was hipnotized. I felt like he gave me a gift from him at that moment, and a part of his talented soul. I had already been singing since I was 14 professionally already. I had recorded and did shows at 18 with producers at Motown and had records on the radio, plus I had worked with my own vocal group and band on the chiterlling circuit, but now I met my Idol, and I felt he was a part of my full circle and destiny. My autobiography will tell the rest of my journey, but in my mind, JACKIE WAS THE GREATEST EVER TO OPEN HIS MOUTH. I later studied classical voice in college and so much more, but he was a God!

This Entertainer should take a big bow!!!! I fell in love with this man when I was a little girl I'm in my late 60s now, and he is still one of my favorites, I think every Entertainer that is out there today Oh's Jackie Wilson a lot more than they're willing to admit. I feel that he was the greatest of all times I put him up there with Sammy Davis jr. Elvis, and other high-powered entertainers. But what happened to Jackie Wilson back then it still goes on so matter-of-fact George Michael sued Sony for the same crap there's a lot of singers out there they got screwed out of their royalties. All musicians should get together and build this building in Jackie name the industry owes this man, he definitely gave you more than you ever gave him. 😏😍😘

Ed Sullivan: "That's the first of many appearances..." Meaning Jackie has great talent and I won't let racism stop me from showcasing him.

My blood races thru me every time I watch this. Makes me smile and want to cry all at the same time. So sad what happened to him. He was beautiful in every way. I watch BGT only in the hope we find another of his ilk but it will never happen.

Yes.. he had the whole package!! The VOICE...stopped you in your track, bc it was touch by an Angel.. yet we MUST realize he was accepted...his talent was, MORE accepted, WHEN it was on a so called white, say but true. He was the black.....where you think the whites got it....he was the showmanship...now 2day media everything BLACKS create(music) got a white face....country music has changed....black ppl has always sung country, now everybody's doing it. Country music changed during the 60's O C Smith(Little Green Apple)etc ..It is what it is...Mr. Wilson, was way a head of his time, and yes...had he been...wow. ..what a big star he would have been ...that VOICE

Jackie Wilson was bigger than Ed Sullivan, Jackie in spite of the announcing comment did his songs with professionalism and grace. He proved to the audience that day he was a true performer in spite of comments. Jackie was well respected and loved by Elvis Presley and other performers of the time. Jackie sang from his heart as God gave him the gift. I Love to hear him sing even being a man, I sure women of the time were melting in their seats as Jackie went to his knees in the singing of To Be Loved. The band was typical of arrangements of the time, clear and professional. I never tire of hearing Jackie sing.

When it comes to male singers, there are 2 categories. Jackie Wilson is one and everyone else is the other. There simply was never a better singer and performer of popular music than Jackie, and this video is all the proof one needs.

Yes I join wholeheartedly in all the accolades of this super singer. Saw him at the StateTheatre in Kingston Jamaica in the fifties. WHAT A NIGHT OF THRILL, HE WAS BACKED BY SIL.AUSTIN AND HIS BAND. AS HE WALKED DAWN THE ISLE SINGING AT THE SAME TIME, SOME OF THE GIRLS NEARLY FAINTED AS HE MADE THEM HIS PERSONAL OBJECTS !! WHAT A GUY!! WHAT AN ENTERTAINER HE WAS!!. 👏

I LOVE JACKIE! I was lucky enough to have seen him headline a few of Porky Chedwick's Groove Spectaculars! NO ONE could have followed him! He did it all! Sang amazingly, danced, crawled on the floor, kissed the girls.....what an incredible show this man could do!
