As a mormon, I've had funeral potatoes all the time, but apparently we are the only ones who call them funeral potatoes. I went to a party hosted by my non mormon friends and they called them mormon potatoes.
Cream of onion soup is really good also instead of cream of chicken. I didn't see him do anything with the cornflakes, but melt some butter add just a little garlic powder,not much, stir then pour it over the cornflakes & stir to coat them.
was already going to change soup (don't like chicken soup), now, must add onions which let me to think of bacon (or ham) and then do the melted butter with some garlic. Got it! NOW, let's hope I remember to try it. lmao
Truly is a staple of Midwest life. Make them with O'Brien frozen hash browns (means there's diced onions and bell peppers mixed in) for some additional flavor 😋
The local high school makes these as a fundraiser at Christmas. This on December 26 and a slice of Christmas ham for breakfast and you’ll be ready for anything

As a former Midwesterner these are a thing and they’re frickin’ delicious. And yes, we only get them at funerals. The lunch was the highlight of being dragged to a funeral as a kid.
Whenever my mom made this it was a huge treat! We’d have it for breakfast. Mom liked it because it was relatively cheap and would last awhile - still one of my favorite dishes ever and I make it for pretty much any potluck event.

I'm l LDS. The reason they call it that. Just a nickname. A lot of work goes into preparation for a meal after a funeral. Usually the relief society ladies do it. They do it on Thier own time,so the family and friends who are upset can have some comfort before thier way home. Usually they have ham, rolls, funeral potatoes,salads,and desert. It's quite nice of them I think
@@juneclark3584 The potatoes may be a LDS/Mormon dish but the tradition of having a potluck or meal served after a funeral is not. In fact, I have been to many faith based and non faith based funerals that have all served meals after the service.
Put a layer of hamburger under it seasoned like meatloaf and if you are extra wanting a heart attack add butter on top of the corn flakes to crisp them. lol I am not sure how my ex husband still lives but this was his go to dish when he cooked dinner.

When my Mormon Grandma died, we were all so disappointed that there were no funeral potatoes at the family dinner. A Mormon funeral without funeral potatoes...😢
YES! Cheesy potato (pronounced potat-uhs) are a staple in every Midwest household party or get together right behind potato (yes, same pronunciation) salad! Corey, thank you for bringing to light the wonders of Cheesy potatoes! As a Midwesterner, I feel seen and heard finally!

In Utah, that's always a meal to love. Try it with some honey glazed ham and asparagus on the side. Oh yeah, and some homemade rolls as well as Jello with home whipped cream on top. You got yourself a Christmas dinner.
This is a Utah/Mormon staple. Usually families have a lunch after funerals that's provided by the local church members, and funeral potatoes are super easy to make in big batches and delicious.
one improvement: lightly crush the corn chips and coat with melted butter for better browning and flavor. Also, for seasoning be sure to use a few glugs Worcestershire sauce in the original cheese mix.
We just call them cheesy potatoes in ohio. I hate onions but throw some diced onion in too and it's really good. If you want to add another layer of flavor when you reheat cook up individual servings in a nonstick skillet with some butter. They also can be breaded and fried
I love funeral potatoes! I make them using the frozen cubed hash browns, specifically the potatoes O'Brien because those also have little bits of peppers and onions! Sooooo good!!! This is a staple in my family around the holidays.
Yeah it's not a seasoning heavy dish. It's got plenty of salt from the cheese and cream of chicken soup, otherwise it's just pepper. Because it's so simple though you could definitely spice it up however you want!
