Why should he be? He sounds like any normal person who isn't a moron with high school education only... Should millions of people be in museum in your logic? He's a guy with economic degrees, writing some books.. People who are in museum have contributed and created something tangible and signifcant to wider society , i assure you noone outside of US doesn't even know who this generic economist is... his just like a politicians babbling in talk shows...
Microphunktv Well I am from the UK and an admirer and follower of Thomas Sowell. I know you dont actually mean anyone outside of the US, but I addressed that point nonetheless. I certainly understand your view but, I believe this man is definitely deserving to be acknowledged in a museum for the knowledge and wisdom he has shared, especially as he shares very unpopular and alternative view points. You say that he shouldn't be in a museum because he simply shares logic ideals, but sound logic like this isn't plentiful in my opinion. Especially when you look at many other black influencers of today's day and age. To me, he is much more deserving to be celebrated than any other celebrity/musician that has contributed nothing more than entertainment. That's my 2 cents.
There are thousands and always have been so you in your mind have made this a dramatic talking point when it is the most absurd incorrect statement. Liberal people do not have nightmares about conservatives. It is all in your mind dude.
Tyrrell, it's both very impressive but is ALSO a huge source of charisma. It's for this reason that I think intellectualism can be a player in the entertainment business, which may be the way it finally becomes fashionable. It certainly isn't now in this age of feelings over facts, but one can only hope
I think you're summing up the same reason so many people on the left like Chomsky--and I posit it's your own emotional response to the challenge of the uncertainty of sound critical thinking. No small irony, given all the complaints fans of Sowell seem to make about liberals being overly emotional and devoid of reason. Chomsky also comes across as "calm", and his fans just eat it up. They think it's "awesome", too, and get all excited, rather than simply saying "his position appears at first glance to be more accurate"--which is all it really amounts to: appearance and impressions. No scientist would leave it at that. It would be like trusting a guy just because he's wearing a lab coat. Fans think it's an indication of a lack of bias, because they're wrapped up in the emotional appeal of being right when somebody disagrees with them or they feel the crusade mind-set coming on. They want to be winning, and Sowell and Chomsky make their fans feel like they are truly justified in feeling superior. What we should do (assuming veracity is our standard, not appearances) is look at the specific data and evidence he offers, and see if the dots he tries to connect really do connect. As opposed to simply getting excited about the fact that he presents data and looks "calm". When we take that extra step we see that the dots very often don't add up. Not that they never do, but we kind find quite a few bad assumptions, or mischaracterizations by him, and a lot of evidence of bias. Not all bias is bad, but to say he's unbiased isn't just inaccurate--it keeps you from understanding the true value of his arguments (because they are of limited value. As are almost all arguments). The same can be said of Chomsky fans, who claim he's a thoroughly unbiased champion of evidence as well. The two are remarkably similar showmen in this regard--taking advantage of the fallacy that just because a person appears calm and well-reasoned, their arguments hold up better. And I see the same devotion among their fans who are very interested in their hero being "right" rather than trying to pick apart their arguments to understand the degree to which they are right (and by default, the degree to which they are wrong. You can't do one sincerely without the other).
I was going to say...he was debunking this stuff decades ago. Yet he was so easily marginalized (there are so few making the same arguments as him, particularly today, but even then) and cast aside, we still are arguing about the same crap today.
He saved me from liberal lunacy when I was a fine arts student in college. I now have a successful fine arts business, my peers....are umemployed or low wage workers. Economics saves lives!
There is a reason they would not expose you to this babbling fool, their job is to prepare you for the world you are about to enter. They did not teach us about how the Moors civilized Europe or how Africans before the inquisitions were the only literate humans who could read and speak all languages fluently because they traded with the entire world. He makes sense but not in this or any economy for the past 200 years.
@@gianacaruso6124 because the majority of academia is a bunch of leftists in the soft sciences ... funny how the more rigorous the subject the more likely the academics are to be conservative (ie physics, math, engineering actually have some conservative professors, because those fields actually take half a brain). Of course most of academia, who are in the midst of a liberal circle jerk over the perceived injustices of modern America, are going to disagree with this guy!! Thanks for pointing that out Einstein!!! lmao
Giana Caruso Sowell taught at Howard, Cornell, Rutgers, Brandeis, Amherst, UCLA & Stanford. His text on economics is a classic and remains in print for over thirty years. The same academics elevated Howard Zinn who is a complete fraud but sells plenty of books to freshman.
@@gianacaruso6124 Well of course not. The answers for fixing any black communities according to the academia is "kill whitey". The Romans were much more advanced than they were and existed hundreds of years before the Moors. The Moors of course were heavily influenced by both the Romans and the Phoenicians. The Moors spoke Arabic and later on Latin. Latin was a uniting language at the time similar to today's English. I could also point out that the Moors were M.E., and not "black". The more intellect you have the more important it is to be humble and realize you don’t and can’t know everything, therefore you shouldn’t make decisions for everyone else no matter how good the intention
Love this guy. I was very sad when he announced his retirement recently. He is pretty old though, so the guy definitely deserves it. He has served us well.
There isn't a single conservative in the history of humanity that deserves the praise you give. Every one is a hypocritical, dishonest, unintelligent man.
Hey, a bias lefty with no foundation to establish any credibility surrounding his statements. I'll play along. Adam is a Liberal boob without a real thougth of his own on any matter of relevance to the world of Dr. Sowell.
Men like Sowell, Friedman, were born a few generations too early. Then again, this kind of wisdom and intelligence escapes most people today, we're just too dumb to understand these principles.
the problem isn't their intellect, its their honesty. they think things through so thoroughly and add honesty to their logic. most intellectuals struggle in other fields because they let their ego get in the way. they write checks their mouth can't cash.
I called Jordan Peterson a walking ICBM when it comes to SJWs... Thomas Sowell is 'Galactus', just devouring idiots and leaving a trail of dead planets in his wake. o.O
In no way can I except THAT, if you KNOW anything about GALACTUS, he represents the WHITE LIBRALS who are BLIND IN EVERY ARGUMENT, SOWELL REPRISENTS THE WATCHER (REMEMBER HIM) who is the TRUE CONCIENCE OF THE GALAXY who by definition COULD not interrupt or persuade OR EVEN GUIDE the Silver Surfer all he could do WAS PRESENT THE FACTS. THIS IS THE GROUNDS UPON WHICH SOWELL REPRISENTS A HIGHER Consciousness THAN THE LIBRALS DO. AND THUS IS NOT THE MONOLITHIC ONE SIDEDED NESS OF IRATIONAL IDIOTS.
J Ward i was born in 1974...the battle of ideas has been killed by the marxist left. I'm a 40 something libertarian, God bless this man's brilliant work
@@gianacaruso6124 you keep saying that but it's not true. You're so tangled in your ideology that you're immune to the harsh truths that minorities aren't overwhelmingly victimized in today's society.
@@austy44 lol....I sure never said that but please, keep putting words in my mouth....lol The fact you used the word victimized is revealing to us all.....keep up the good work but you are really boring me at the moment
@@gianacaruso6124 they're right though. Most people aren't racist, women aren't paid less than men, it's illegal to fire or mistreat someone in the workplace for how they look.
Ehm well president obama is a wellspoken black dude, Thomas Sowell is an honest intellectual. Honestly the US would have been better off with him, it's too bad the man is not good with politics.
If you heard dr. Ben Carson before he ran, you would've said the same. Blacks got to be exceptional but whites can be a Bush or Trump. All it'll take for him to be out of race would be his potential character, which again doesn't mean nothing for whites. So before you say that, check your own explicit and implicit bias. You, your family and friends would naturally prefer a half qualified whites, because it's more than the brain of the man, it's the culture! The perception of black in America and in the world in negative, just for being black!! Your grand parents have done a thorough job dehumanizing blacks. If you think he could have made a good president, ask yourself if you and your family would've voted for him.
+ Bright Light + You sound like you too could have been a brilliant, and successful black man too. You weren't smart enough to abandon the intellectual dishonesty of the left, like Mr Sowell did though. One dead giveaway, is that civet, explicit, implicit, illicit bias BS, you mentioned. Your post is so chock full, of undigested, leftist nonsense, & your own assumptions about MYTHIC, virulent racism, [Which you have no actual, evidence of.].that little of it, makes much sense. I would like to know what you think. With that much left-wing, mind-pollution, clouded by your personal prejudices, & the lazy stereotypes, you rely on, I can't really tell what you mean. The greatest difference between you,;[You dim bulb!] and Thomas Sowell, is that he #WalkedAway, (Decades before it was a # thing.) because he believed in EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE, and .... YOU DID NOT, AND DO NOT! Take a look at the MAN, & the props he gets here, because of his MIND! Now take a look at you, and the mess you wrote. YOU could have been SOMEBODY! a CONTENDER, with a MIND TO BE CONTENDED WITH! KOut
the man is a mental goliath. my favorite part, "arbitrary definitions are just as arbitrary when expressed as numbers". its so simple and elegant but yet so heavily looked over.
Sure you can, just no one cares.....lol This man is a idiot and fell from grace in the mid 70s for some very bad things he did.....ever wonder why he is not teaching anymore.....?
Giana Caruso actually, I'd like to know what you have to validate the "very bad things" that he did which made him stop teaching. He's not teaching anymore because he's 87 years old, and he did in fact teach though his working years.
I’m in the process of reinventing myself after a 3 year long drug addiction, and I can safely say, this man’s insight into the world past, present and future will be of greater help than any social worker who I’ve interacted with thus far.
This is a laugh. Did you see the golden globes? Aside from Ricky Gervais, they were ALL talking heads for the Democratic Party and there’s actually media outlets trying to talk down to Gervais for calling out pedophilia supporters and cancerous political agendas.
Sowell argues that culture is a determining factor in group’s success. Conversely it can also mean that it is a determining factor in their failure. He has argued quiet eloquently that “There are many groups who, when freed from their particular constraints within their society, burst forth with all the other abilities that they have. In their own homes / countries, they are throttled by various other factors”. Yet - in term of the African American condition, he fails to acknowledge the impact after the end of slavery (1865)- the continuation of subjugation and non-participation under Jim crown for the next 100 years until 1965; and then more insidious instruments like redlining and the creation of the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (under Franklin D. Roosevelt) which tiered neighbours on a map used to essentially discriminate against providing credit to black neighbourhoods right up until even the 1977 community reinvestment act (CRA under Jimmy Carter in 1977 (since mortgage discrimination had become institutionalized and proven to be so up until that point; thereby requiring legislation to create more reporting disclosure on how irrelevant factors were being used - including race). The same can be said about the likes of Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman, and that useful foghorn for right-wing denialism that racism has every existed, Candace Owens) who are on record as pretty much advocating that they have made it because racism is a myth. Well, Candace is married to a white Englishman - if the irony of historical mental slavery couldn’t be more readily personified; and Denzel and Morgan made their career on the back of playing characters impacted by fights for civil rights, or victims impacted by hardwired American cultural and institutional racism and antipathy towards blacks. That is why Sowell is disappointing; because whilst he makes good arguments about equality of opportunity rather than enforcing affirmative action, he fails to be consistent when it comes to the cultural struggle visited on the black experience in the USA but also in the legacy instruments that colonial / Imperial chains still hold terms of assets, resources and credit/liquidity even in Africa to this day! He singles out Black Americans whose experience has been systematically unique within that structure in the land of the free, not to apply his own rule or lofty utopic ideology. Don’t get me wrong, Sowell is indeed brilliant and his thesis is one I subscribe to for the most part. But there is no doubt that he is a victim of his own celebrated and unhealthy Faustian Bargain with the largely White establishment conservative view of gaslighting. This is an affliction that captured many successful Blacks who are bitten by Stockholm Sydnrome to the extent that they want to be in the club at all costs once they are accepted into the “acceptable black person” status. They forget that they are the exception and very far away from what remains the rule. Even the brilliant Sowell the Great can have a blindspot!
I'd prefer to spread his wisdom among the population in literature and videos so as to honor his memory properly and at the same time wise up the general public, or atleast some of it.
Once in a life time intellectual of our time. Black folks…this guy is your real life super hero and should look up to him. At least he’s my super hero…
@10:20: "not really, not really, no it hasn't, no it hasn't, oh no you don't know that of your own knowledge"telling her she is an idiot without changing an octave.
I'm astounded that the issues being discussed today were already discussed and debated during Tom Sowell's time. That debate with him and the woman about affirmative action, my golly, its like deja vu.
Isn't listening to Thomas such a breath of fresh air. The man is so insightful, so articulate, and he's just telling you the facts. And he's called an uncle Tom for it. This man is a true intellectual, a hero, a legend. ❤
@@thepeaksandthetroughs Thomas Sowell is a paid shill bootlick pandering for white approval! He doesn't address actual LEGITIMATE race grievances! That alone marks him as a DISGRACE!
I am in a NYC public school and with every thought and every breath, I cherish and share the existence of this man with anyone who hears my voice--Sadly, they don't know of him nor care enough to explore him--and that is why education in NY has continued to erode so effortlessly--logic and reason might as well have died in thr Enlightenment--His approach to argument is research and as he once said, there is a point of no return...we have reached it in NY education, in NY law, in NY politics, in human decency, in restriction of law enforcement, and there's no turning back--my sons know Thomas Sowell and in due time, will know his scholarship and it's relevance as well as that of Abraham Lincoln--that's what I can give them
I love when he tilts his head and swivels left and right in his chair! He exudes such confidence in those old videos! He wasn't arrogant, he simply knew his value and that he was right because he had the FACTS.
His intellectual superiority has been dwindled down by idiots calling him an “Uncle Tom.” While they are simply proving his point, it still hurts as someone that cares about the objective over the subjective.
I shared the task of running a job interview once. It was for a Non-Government Organisation in Australia. One woman in the interview didn't mention 'diversity' so she was the first to go. The woman who sprinkled the word 'diversity' and 'diverse' into her sentences got the job. It was a job for a social worker.
Imagine him saying these things in the legislature building today… none of it would ever even see the air waves of mainstream media. Instead, the media will clip his words to demean his messages. He would be, far and away, the most brilliant among them today… as he was in his own.
My favorite intellectuals/orators are Christopher Hitchens and Thomas Sowell. Sad that one is dead and the other is retiring :( I'm struggling to find others that will carry the mantle, though Douglay Murray is a good example.
Whilst I might disagree with Ben Shapiro on some points I think he might be an interesting person to take note off. Also just because they are deceased or retiring does not mean we can't spread or use the intellectual content they left behind.
Time: 3:20..... "... If an engineer builds a building that collapses, it doesn't matter how brilliant his idea was, his is ruined. Conversely, If an intellectual has an idea to rearrange society and it ends in disaster, he pays no price at all..." Dr. Thomas Sowell
What really gets me about this video, is that Sowell was tearing the ground out from underneath the left's arguments with such efficiency several decades ago. No-one can say that any of the people in these debates that Sowell argued with went away after winning any of the debates. And despite this, and all the other great men and women who've pointed out the issues with Identity Politics alongside Sowell, the left has never been more prevalent. That more than anything else makes me despair for the future.
I've read several of Dr. Sowell's books and listened to hours of his video interviews and other public discussions. He's marvelous. Awesome voice, too.
Because their ideas if followed would lead to a citizenry that would be self sufficient and no longer need government which is a direct threat to the power they hold
"If an engineer builds a building and it collapses, he's ruined, no matter how brilliant his idea was. Conversely, if an intellectual has a brilliant idea to rearrange society, which ends in disaster, he pays no price at all" Damn.
How fortunate we are to be graced to have Thomas Sowell . How unfortunate we are there is only one of him . I can only imagine what the world would be like if we had many many more people like Thomas Sowell.
When was this the late 70's early 80's? Funny how we are still having the same discussion and call it progression.. seems more like a truck stuck in the mud just spinning tires.
Agreed. He comes prepared, asks good open-ended questions, and then actually lets them answer without interrupting. Such a simple formula yet rarely seen.
