The only action that you should be taking in the moment is having a friend back you up to keep you calm and on point, approach it with cold logic and a predetermined beginning, middle, and end. I don't think there's any reason you can't remain cordial. Holding on to bitterness and hate is only going to poison you. But there's always going to be a kind of barrier there. Friends require trust and a certain level of intimacy... less than a romance requires, but there has to be some there. You can be nice to your ex, but I don't think you can really be 'friends' in a meaningful sense. Anyone who tries is just keeping a backup romance or someone to take advantage of and that's not good for anyone.
