The BEST Pet Turtle!? Painted Turtles, info and care video 

The painted turtle started me down this turtle life! Truly an amazing species and very hardy- in the Midwest they’ll live in just about any still body of water, including retention ponds in suburban areas. Nice video, enjoyed the B-roll footage!

Be prepared for a long term friend. Bought mine around my 10th birthday in March 1993 and now over 27 years later she is still going strong and still laying eggs every year. Best birthday present I ever got.

I found a painted turtle on the golf course in spring 2021. It was in the middle of the fairway, bone dry, and the size of a bottle cap, so I put him by the nearest water, over 200 yards away. Came back 20 minutes later and he was still there, in it's shell. I took it home as my 55 gallon tank was almost done cycling, and now he's healthy and well, although missing two toes when I found it, the turtle is a great swimmer. I finally ordered a mercury vapor bulb, as I can't let him bask naturally in the winter for the cold, and lack of sunlight in Michigan. I can't believe my turtle is still alive and I hope it's got years left in the tank!

I have an eastern painted turtle. He lives outside year round in my artificial man-made outdoor pond. I've had him three years now and he's grown quite a bit since he arrived as a small yearling

A month ago we had a downpour of rain here.. I saw a turtle crossing the road (outskirts of town).. I stopped to get her across the road. It was a PAINTED TURTLE :0 - its shell was 9" long :) Its creek had been flooded so, it was seeking higher ground, I suppose.. beautiful turtle.. her claws were formidable :)

My personal favorite is the Midland painted turtle. I have one named buddy who acts like a little puppy dog. He loves to wonder around the room then always come back to check on me. He also loves to eat from my hands and begs for food every time that I go near the tank.

Had one and it is what got me hooked. Got him as a baby. Such a great personality out of my other turtles

Easy to care for, true. For me the Wood Turtle & spotted Turtles make cool pets. Most especially Wood turtle. I've had them follow me around to get food. Especially Strawberries.

I've had my painted turtle for almost sixteen years now. The hatchlings were found in a pool filter. Most things I read when I first got him weren't specific to painteds, so I've been worried when almost everything was saying to get them to eat veggies/greens. Good to hear that the carnivorous diet is normal.

I would say musk turtles are also great pets, as they stay small (even the largest of them; the razorback) and are low maintenance. As long as you give them clean water, heat, and food, they're good to go. Though I provide a basking area, I've never even seen my razorback use it. They're the best, IMO.

I love my turtle is a gorgeous 2yr old boy he is so sweet appetite is great warm days I let him go outside and play he is just a joy to have he is therapeutic for me. close losses that were and still are hard to get through in my family. and shortly after that I got Yoshi. His nick name is "bobble ".

i got my baby painted turtle from the wild. he was at my work and there was no water anywhere in sight and he was walking across my shoe so i took him home and bought a tank lol.

I love my western painted! 2nd oldest pet in my collection. He's 10 years old and is extra small for an adult. I keep him in a 150 gallon stock tank outside spring through fall, and then put him in a 40 gallon for winter. Huge variety of diet and amazing personality. Never had any health problems, and I couldn't recommend a painted turtle more for an easy aquatic species. Awesome and relatable video Greg.

Im in Kansas and here we have the western painted turtles. I have 2 one male and the other female. There so cool to watch especially as they grow. I've had mine now for 3 years. Wonderful animals!

Would love some information on where to get a midland painted. I have a southern, eastern and western, all a few months old in a 150 gallon. Midlands seem to be the hardest to find and have had no luck so far. The few "online" captive bred sources are all "out of stock" every time I check. Any info would be appreciated.

I took mine from a pond In Delaware. Only because she had a lower jaw injury and would not have survived .she let me walk right up on her and grab her. I found this odd her mouth was stuck open and had a weird glob inside which I removed with tweezers. I got her to eat some ground turkey . She regained full bite force . But her lower right jaw bone is gone and she has a gap now . She was just a hatchling when I found her. She's now nearing adulthood . Great pet .she's in a 75 gal aquarium. One of the heartiest turtles I've owned. Even with the jaw injury she has a mean bite can hang off my fingertip and won't let go. I call her terrapit.beacause her lower jaw has a jagged appearance. Like teeth almost.

We have a female midland painted turtle. I know u aren’t suppose to take them out the wild but we own a boat on a reservoir and she was about to be eaten by bird. So we took her and had her since!! She’s about to be one we got her when she was about the same size as your baby turtles!! she is very active she will literally chase your finger on her tank lol!! Her name is Mikey because we thought she was a boy at first but she super sweet!! And she loves when we hold her

I live in upstate NY & found a baby painted turtle in a parking lot. I think he is Midland painted. 5 years later I still have him BUT the top of his shell is not smooth it it bumpy? I always thought it was normal but I've watched shows and such & all are smooth. Can anyone tell me why that may be?!

What turtle breed do you think is best for a beginner? I’ve never kept a turtle before and the pet store I went to makes it sound very easy. I’m working on researching before I make the commitment.

Totally agree with your choice of Eastern Painted Turtle and Zoo Med and Mazuri Pellets. I found out the hard way that ReptoMin pellets led to a "bumpy" shell in my Western Painted hatchlings. Raised a couple more hatchlings this past winter on Zoo Med pellets and the shells turned out quite nice. Steve Enders of "The Turtle Room" wrote a good article evaluating various commercial turtle pellets if anyone is interested: theturtleroom.org/blog/2012/04/27/commercial-foods-benefitsuses-staplessupplements/

I get two western painteds. They are just like two mix gems of emerald and red agate. And after watching your video, I think eastern ones are also good looking. Wish to see more series like this. BTW, am crazy about musk turtles！

We have a natural pond with lots of eastern painted turtles, I have seen as many as sixteen at a time, basking in the sun. I put logs and old stumps for them to get out of the water and not have to be on the shore. For a treat, I dig earth worms but I would like to know what other natural product I can feed them.

Which is better male or female's to take care of?

I adopted a trio of turtles last December- a painted turtle and two Mississippi map turtles- it’s been a process trying to get them to transition to an adult diet (wouldn’t eat their greens) but the main issue I’ve come across is that my painted turtle - his name is Tippy- has ( before I got him) already killed two females due to neck trauma… and he has recently started going after one of the map turtles it took me ten minutes to get him to let go thank god that he only had ahold of the neck skin and not the whole neck …. I’ve been told by my vet that Tippy is more social than is expected and just recently started he started trying to bite me- and he HATES my guy friend- at first I was amused thinking awe he is being protective but now I’m getting concerned and don’t know what I should do to solve these issues I want them all to live happy full lives
