I used shade cloth over my tomatoes and several other veggies to keep the heat off. Worked every time. I put a timed irrigation system in the garden to keep the ground moist around the veggies. Of course I had to dress around the base of the veggies to keep the sun from scorching things.
I have a jalapeño plant, several California wonder bell peppers, broccoli, garlic, fingerling potatos, and a meyer lemon all in containers or elevated raised bed. (My cucumbers were discovered by the deer. One lone survivor.) Cabbage and collards are struggling with bugs.
Jeff that was a very helpful tip! I wanted to embark on gardening but I let spring get past me this year. So now I'm in research mode. I'll be sure not to let August slip past me. Thanks! Blessings!
Tomatoes are still producing on my container cherry tomato plants, as well as jalapeño peppers. I moved them to the front east side when it got so so hot in Conroe. They only received morning sun. My peppers love the heat but they too were moved. Thanks ever so much for your videos'. Have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving holiday.
Yep, I live very close to you..have some nice tomatoes on the vine...planted Kale, it always does well, peas...leeks..turnip greens, and romaine lettace...all are doing well...
Love seeing ALL those beautiful tomatoes and cukes in Nov! Here in Charlotte (8a), I still have 2 containers with one cherry tom. that is finishing up and one Bellafina pepper plant that has 18 peppers on it, so I put it in the garage when frost is forecast. We've had a couple of nights with frost, so the collards are now delicious, sweet, and tender. Kale and broccolini, too. Look forward to seeing yours in a couple of months. I always enjoy your videos, so please keep them coming! Hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Smart move with planting tomatoes in containers. To your point, just bring them inside at night and put them back out in full sun in the day. There are so many ways to enjoy fresh produce most of the year, even in zones that tend to not be as warm in the fall. Happy Turkey day!
Great looking garden!! I'm in Tyler and I want to say we had warm temps well into December...and then the next day we had a couple days of ice. But that's how our weather goes...right? Great videos too!
Thanks for today’s video Jeff. I live in the Woodlands and have wanted to Get into gardening. I made the mistake of planting Tomatoes in July this year and my results were less than Desirable. Where would I go about obtaining some quality seeds For my next attempt? Thanks for the great content. Go Stros and Houston Strong!
Jeff, Thank you for your video! When do you start your tomatoes from seed in the summer? I find calendars posted online really confusing as some don’t specify if the dates are for starting seeds or transplanting. I am in DFW area, so I will need to shift your dates back but it should give me a better idea. I have a bunch of tomatoes now. I think I finally figured out how to get some spring crop. Plant extremely early (even before the last frost date given for the area) and protect with gardening fabric from cold and winds. This made a huge difference. In the spring, I start seeds on Jan. 15 but I may even try to do it a bit earlier. As for fall, I still have to figure the best times. I am also wondering how you grow your fall garden tomato seeds as you have to start them when it is extremely hot outside. I start my spring tomatoes in trays in my closet under grow lights. It is a nice set up but the real estate is limited and also I have to deal with acclimatization. It seems to be more logical to grow fall garden seedlings outside since there is plenty of light and acclimatization will not be needed. Should I just put them somewhere in a shady area? What do you think?
GO 'STROS! HAPPY TURKEY, JEFF! I live about 40 miles north of you, and tonight I covered my tomatoes (big ones just now setting), peppers, and squash (instead of cucs). We can run a good 5 degrees colder than you in MC. Do you cover your plants when temps get into 40's? I find it's not so much the temps that get my plants, but the wind that rips them up. Just hoping I'm not overdoing it, or over protective.
We have not gotten below 40 yet, but yes I throw a blanket on them. Another idea is to put xmas light on under the blanket to create a little warmth. Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Great video!!! I keep a close eye on what you do and grow since you're in Houston and I'm in San Antonio. Do you start your peppers and tomatoes from seed in December for a spring harvest? I know you start your tomato seeds in august for fall harvest. Do you do the same for peppers for a fall harvest? Great seeing you back doing videos. I'll be in Houston in jan for business. Would like to meet up if you have time.
I too love in the houston area & am trying to decide between trying black krim or black seaman. I first heard about black seaman from your video. Have you grown black krim? If so, why do you prefer black seaman?
Jeff, I have lots of tomatoes this time of year, but they are mostly green. How are you getting red tomatoes this early? I put my transplants in the ground in mid September after starting with seeds in mid August.
Skip, only the cherry tomatoes are getting red at this time. The larger tomatoes I have are still green. The larger one's will take a little more time ripen. Also, make sure that the tomatoes get at least 8 hours of full sun a day.
