The Best Places For Expats To Live Abroad?

In this video we'll go over some of the locations that I think would be the best places for expats to live abroad, work abroad or even retire abroad. This is something I receive messages/emails about from time to time, and I've been wanting to talk about the idea as if I were to start expat life over again... what would be the places that I would consider. Even though I'm the type of person who likes to live in smaller cities/towns and I live in Italy in a small city... I wanted to take the approach of what cities I would live in and what I think might be some of the best cities to live in the world for expats and some of the countries that I consider to be the top countries for expats and just overall the top places for expats to move abroad, live abroad and experience life abroad. In this list of what I would think of as some of the top cities to live in the world, I want to also discuss why I would consider them, and also talk about the places I wouldn't move to either. There are many more places to talk about than what I've mentioned in this video, and please keep in mind the cities are listed in no specific order.

im a spaniard from south america and now living in toronto which i like but takes quite a few years to like it here because it was a city that closes when the sun goes down , but it changed now its a smaller version of new york. i travelled quite regular before this virus and been i would say most places in the world and i must say italy and japan and south korea are my favourite places in the world. italy has the most unesco sites next to china in the world , its history, the food my god, its a living musuem . i love their small towns the most each one has so much charm and different from one another, its amazing. portugal is my second wonderful place in europe.

The catch with the Nordic countries is that they are very expensive. Budapest wasn't mentioned, but it's very affordable for a major European capital. Portugal and Italy are a good shout. I'd love to spend a few months in both and just see what it's like. The practical content about ex-pat life in Italy is a great help. Thanks.

Hi Rafael! I have been following you for some years now and always enjoy your videos! I guess that I have never really commented any of the videos on youtube, but I just had to do it now :). I am born and raised in Estonia and I am completely in love in Italy. I have moved back and forth from Tallinn to Italy already twice and after a year living in Tallinn again, I have decided to move back to Palermo, Sicily, where I previously lived for 2 years. Flying there next week to for some time and your immigration related and different lockdown videos have always been super useful. Why I am commenting this video is actually the fact that I am a global mobility specialist (like an immigration lawyer) in an Estonian startup and we help other start ups and tech companies to relocate foreign talent to Estonia. It is surprising, but now in the middle of Covid-19 pandemic we have a record amount of active relocation cases (around 300 for a team of 5). It was very surprising to have this peak of relocation cases during the pandemic, but it is nice to see that Estonia is still an attractive tech and start up hub for foreigners :). My heart is in Italy, so I am relocating myself permanently to Italy, but still continue helping foreigners to move and settle in Estonia with smart working. I have seen from your videos that you really liked Palermo, so if you are ever there again, lets have an aperativo! Cheers from Estonia. * I also speak Italian, but well, I guess that I am sometimes quite lazy about it and prefer talking in person rather than writing in italian 🙆🏼‍♀️
@RafaelDiFuria
@RafaelDiFuria 3 года назад
I can completely understand having your heart here, there's just something about this country ^_^ I have a number of friends who also work in global mobility and also immigration lawyers and something that I'd seen across the board was the same as what you said, a huge spike in interest in moving abroad or foreign citizenship. Even I know a couple of people who decided to go to Estonia to spend time there becase of what the government was offering digital nomads this year. Whenever i'm in Palermo again definitely up for meeting, feel free to add me on facebook :)

I was so happy to see your number 1 be Rome because it’s what I’ve decided on as I look to relocate to Italy upon having my citizenship recognized. Plus it’s close to my ancestral comune that I’m pretty sure I’ll need to deal with from a residency point of view, though I definitely want to spend some time there (San Vito Romano) Lots of people criticize Rome but all the points you made are the reasons why I love it.

I was looking into moving to either Genova or Torino, but I'm leaning more towards Torino. While I feel like I'd enjoy living in Genova more, apparently the job market there isn't great, and there doesn't seem to exist many companies that do A/V production there (I've only found two); meanwhile Torino has RAI and quite a few other companies that work on that area (I've found about ten, but I stopped looking). Also, houses are more or less the same price in both cities, but in Genova you're limited to an apartment, whereas Torino has some pretty nice houses at the 100k range, especially in the hills near/at Pino Torinese, which is a beautiful area. Still, I feel like I'd adapt to the Genovese weather a lot better, and the way the city looks and is laid out is truly captivating to me. But then again, Torino is close to the Alps and still looks stunning. I'd say that if you're going to Genova to work, just make sure that there are companies there on your field, and that they're hiring. I feel that going there "empty handed" is super risky.
@popgems
@popgems 3 года назад
@@AlfaRomeoQ Genova has a large creative community and as creative artists, we can't imagine being anywhere else. We prefer having a flat as opposed to a house because we don't want to be tied to the responsibility of managing a yard/lot. We enjoy having a "lock and leave" flat because we travel. Also, living somewhere that is not coastal was a deal breaker for us, but if you feel Torino offers you more employment opportunities, there you have it then. Good luck with your endeavors in Torino!
@AlfaRomeoQ
@AlfaRomeoQ 3 года назад
@@popgems I'm not entirely opposed to the idea of living in a flat to be honest, especially considering the amazing views in Genova. Would you say there are job opportunities for someone doing Video Production in Genova? I'll probably only be moving to Italy in 3~4 years, so having that as an option besides Torino would be fantastic.

Your choices are a giveaway that your from the Pacific Northwest! 😆 I haven't been to Stockholm, but I did a layover at the airport once and it was honestly the nicest airport I've ever been to... and it's surrounded by forest. I agree that New Zealand is great. Its feels a bit similar to the West coast of North America, but the people are even more focused on being green and just alternative ways of doing things. The only downside I noticed in being there is that it was SUPER easy for me to get sunburnt and the people there told me it's because there's a hole in the ozone just above NZ, so you have to watch.

Ciao Rafeal Thanks for your video insights. I am finding it hard to find my next expat experience. I would like to settle for a long time in Italy but residency is an issue despite being married to an Italian for years (now divorced) and lived in Rome in the 90's. I speak fluent Italian and would like to live in Italy in a smaller city, maybe in Liguria or Veneto as I like to live near the sea and somewhere not too cold but with a bit of northern sophistication. The other places I am considering are Croatia and Southern Turkey. Turkey is great value but am not sure of the cultural differences even though I have lived in Beirut and Dubai. I think the more you experience the harder it is to choose. I agree Milan is sketchy, I never liked it. I also like Lugano but is a bit pricey.

To add about Rome, there are some nice spots in the outskirts (including beach areas) that I've been looking into. Quite apart from the cost saving compared to living 'centrally', some are definitely less touristy as well. One thing I'd say is some are better connected than others; for me I'd like to have fast/direct train links to get into central Rome, yet have the advantage of being a little 'outside' the city.

@@RafaelDiFuria Two reasons. One, the huge influence of my friend Stefano in Switzerland and two my old friend Tim, who eventually wants to retire in the same area didn’t want to live in South America. Bariloche was my first choice but logistics in getting there are tough and it takes about 30 hours of traveling (including layovers). He didn’t want to be that “far” from his grandchildren. So, we had to choose a place where both of us liked.

I lived in Korea and have visited Japan a few times. Though the public transit in Seoul and Tokyo are fantastic and both cities have a lot to offer, I'd much prefer a city like Busan or Kyoto or Osaka. The trouble with those bigger Asian cities is you can easily get by never learning the language and it'd be easy to find the expat groups and only associate with them. Plus, Seoul and Tokyo are far more expensive than the other cities in their countries. I feel like it's almost a little harder to get the full cultural experience.

My wife and I love Paris. It was the first city we visited in Europe. Our friends say we're Francophiles because we've been to France so much and seen so much of the country. However, almost every time we've gone, there's been a terrorist attack either the same day we were flying out or a week after we left. Paris is not what it used to be. I was sad to see the barriers go up around the Eiffel Tower and sad when Notre Dame burned down. I'd still retire in a smaller town in Normandy-we loved that part of the country. Florence is a beautiful city too, but the immigrants relentlessly hound you no matter where you go trying to sell you roses or trinkets. It was impossible to enjoy a dinner or drinks sitting outside. I see why you picked Rome as your favorite. History everywhere you go and the subway system is so easy to use. I feel like we walked from one end of Rome to the other in just an hour. It's such a walkable city. We always felt safe walking around late at night and the police are on top of it. We saw a woman get her purse snatched not far from the Colosseum and the police rolled up on the mugger less than a minute after and clubbed the crap out of him. I'm sure he'll think twice about stealing again. I also loved the set pricing on espresso and cigarettes. I'm not sure if that was a Rome thing or an Italian thing and if they still do that, but I liked knowing I was paying the same for an espresso no matter what café we stopped in.

I grew up between Germany, the UK and New Zealand and am also of Italian descent. Apart from the Rome area, I'd consider parts of Canada (Toronto was lovely) and actually Paris for a while would be something I'd consider (but likely not long-term). Same for parts of Switzerland where I also have family. Parts of Australia are nice, but it's just too far away for me from most family, friends... so a place I would visit again for sure, but not move to permanently.

I like living in Vancouver -- the "dirty, druggy" area is one small corner of the city, and even there, it's not all that dangerous. Certainly not as dangerous as cities in the USA. Unfortunately, it's close to the cruise ship docks, so sometimes that's all tourists see of Vancouver. But when you actually live here, it's not a part of your life. Vancouver regularly tops best cities lists. An actual problem of living in Vancouver is that the cost of living is very high compared to the relatively low wages. Victoria, on the other hand, is an almost perfect city. My daughter moved to Switzerland when she graduated university a few years ago and has a lovely lifestyle in Lucerne (which is a gorgeous small city). Switzerland is very expensive for tourists, but their wages are high, so it's actually not that bad when you live and work there. She is doing much better financially than she would be doing here. Like you, I also love Lugano. (But you can keep Rome!). I'm surprised you didn't mention any Australian cities -- they also top best city lists. Perth, maybe?

I would love to move to Italy after all this Covid stuff is over with. I’m an elementary school teacher and have my ESL certification. Hopefully this video helps: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9m196I9GppM.html If I remember correctly, I mentioned it in in that video... It depends on the school, however knowing Italian is very necessary, I've seen second-language speakers who struggled with English being chosen over native speakers. And because English teachers are practically a dime a dozen, most schools won't offer to sponsor a visa.

Among the digital nomads that I know, most have had a difficult time making it work in Italy and look at countries with a lower cost of living and friendlier less complicated tax system. As far as I know there's a self employment visa but it's not supposed to be easy to get and not geared for people looking to have some of the flexibility that comes with the Digital Nomad lifestyle.

Berlin should be in your list, it's the most ex-pat friendly city in Germany and I have heard great things about Lisbon and it looks like a very beautiful city. The one place I would never want to move to would be Rome. Everything outside the city center looks run down and public transportation there is awful, and traffic is truly hellish there. I live in BC , but I come from Germany and yes Vancouver is awful to live in. Every time we go to Vancouver there are homeless people, drifters, drug attics you name it. Some of them have dogs because they get more money from social assistance or from people when they are begging. I feel bad for the animals not for the people. Almost every city in BC is like that. Kamloops is another one. You can’t walk in the city of Kamloops without being asked for money or food a dozen times. You always have to look over shoulder and keep your ears open. It’s terrible. About your points on Brazil, they're spot on, although Argentine meat is better than ours. But there are a few other reasons why I wouldn't recommend people coming to live here: -Our political climate is very similar to the US: extremely polarized and NOT open to discussion, people will label you and you can't have a civilized debate. -Living here is not really that cheap, especially if you're working here. Unless you have an amazing degree where you can get a job that pays R$10k+, you'll never have the same standard of living as someone would in Europe earning 1500 euros or in the US with 2000 dollars, and that is especially true in most cities with more than 1m inhabitants. If you're coming to work a regular job (cashier, construction, deliveries, etc), please don't; these kind of jobs are the only positions that many Brazilians can fulfil, and you'll only be doing both the Brazilian people and yourself a disservice, since the wages will be awful and it's quite likely most foreigners won't be able to survive. -Also, it is important to consider that all imported goods (cell phones, TVs, computers, etc) will cost 2x the price it does in America, and I'm not comparatively speaking (as in, price compared to wages), an iPhone 12 mini costs 699$ in the US and 1300$ in Brazil. -This might be the same reason you've given, but crime here is really really bad. Sure, most people might not see/experience it on a daily basis, but it doesn't mean that it's not there. While you'll probably won't be murdered (unless you get involved with crime or resist a robbery), you will most likely have something stolen from you at some point. And if you don't speak Portuguese with a Brazilian accent, it is quite likely people will either try to scam you, or sell you something overpriced; well, I guess that could count as a scam as well. I know most Brazilians would prefer to hide these issues, but they do exist, and I feel like it's not right for foreigners to come here without knowing that these things happen, just because most Brazilians feel like we should hide them instead of actually fixing them. If you've got your mind set and you really want to come here, that's fine; but bear in mind these things might affect you at some point. While being a foreigner (well, from a developed country at least) will most likely land you some great job opportunities, you can't take that for granted.

Stockholm is awesome. Clean, efficient, friendly, openminded, tolerant, bustling with activity. Super safe. Things work on time. If you’re late, you’re out lol Quality of life is extremely high. Strong welfare systems. Bigger than people realise. With the archipelago (“the garden of Stockholm”) and countryside 20 minutes away by public transport. The most popular government agency is the tax agency. They regulate taxes for businesses and citizens, have free classes for startups, very friendly efficient staff. Most people spend like 15 minutes filing their taxes in April. Overall, Swedish burocracy is a breeze. It’s a myth that it’s cold in Stockholm. Global warming killed the snowy winters. We have not had months of snow in the winters since 1990. We have crazy heatwaves in the summers and winters are increasingly warmer with continental rainy weather. There was like 19 plus Celsius in January last year at one point. Stockholm is affordable and even cheap compared to many countries/cities because people are payed well and prices, taxes are lower. Considering our taxes and what they cover, we are better off compared to most countries, in my opinion. Starting your own thing is not a massive risk because of the stable systems. I’m often stunned at the prices abroad because I know people don’t earn much. Food is amazing because Swedes are picky about quality and used to a huge variety of cuisines 🥩 (You might spell check Tallinn 🤣) Locations really depends on your passport/s and working permits anyways.
