What I Hate About Italy... well... sort of

These are what I hate about Italy... although truly there's actually nothing I really hate here haha. But if I had to say some things that I get annoyed with here in Italy, this video would sum up most of them. I'm often asked about what I hate about living in Italy, but all in all I have to say I really don't have any major complaints. Yes it's not easy to move to another country and live life as a foreigner in Italy. I know this is not the case for everyone, but when talking about the pros and cons of living in Italy I often find more pros than cons... even with my problems with shopping in Ialy and drinking a cappucino in the afternoon. It's hard for me to even think about reasons why I don't like Italy, because at the end of the day... I love Italy :)

I was in Italy for about 6 months, between last year and this year. I noticed that most towns and cities are not very wheelchair/4-point walker friendly. It concerns my wanting to move there in a couple of years because there is no way to know if I'll be stuck in one again. I sometimes need to walk with a cane and noticed people looked at me and dealt with me worse when I needed to use it to get around.

What you say about the closing time of shops depends on where you live... I live in the lake como area and everithing is open from 8 in the morning until 9pm and there are supermarkets open 24hours a day and I live in a village of 3000 people... so that's a Veneto thing and mostly a Rovigo thing!

Uhm, the coperto is not a tip, though, you can't think in those terms. There's this misconception that the coperto would be for bread, water, etc. while it's actually for the apparecchiatura - until not long ago you usually did not have a coperto to pay unless you had a tablecloth (a REAL tablecloth, not paper ones), plates, cutlery etc.

I inherited a house, and several parcels of land in Italy. I can go on for hours about the Italian legal system, squatters rights, utility companies, hospitals, water availability, taxes, the banks, driving, parking, the post office and of course the never ending garbage crisis. All of which would make a third world country look more appealing. All these incredible frustrations I experienced with an Italian passport and codice fiscale. Even with the MANY negatives I have personally experienced, Italy is a magical place. Next year I’ll rent in Rome, because home ownership in Italy can drive one insane. BTW, I’ve already spent 20,000 Euros in lawyer fees to get one squatter off a one acre lot and I’m not even close to a conclusion. When a lawyer, or ANYBODY, hears your American accent what it sounds like to them is a cash register. ALL countries have their frustrations, Italy is no different.

All of my bills and most italians bills arrive exatly in the right day through the e-mail address... this is year 2020 not 1990... and of course there are bills that should be paied monthly other every 6 months others once a year depending on the service you are paying... if a service costs 20 euros per year do you think it's a good idea to split it in a number of instalments!!! So that the cost of the multiple cash operations will exceed the cost of the service itself!!! Come on it's a matter of organisation and in Italy we are used to take care of organising on our own we don't need the bank or the post office or anybody else sending us reminders about bills, if you are an adult it is supposed that you can organise yourself if you're a child maybe you need someone who reminds you what, when and how... !!! Bureaucracy is a matter of following the directions and organise yourself. I found to be a nightmare the fact that there isn't a rule that connect the way you write english to the way you read it... so that you must memorise thousands of words and when there is s new word that you have nerver heard before you won't be sure on how it's written until you find it on a dictionary... Italian German French and most languages are so easy on that ... you learn the rule and that's it... this to say that there are things that are really a mess, for instance the fact that english is not a phonetic language so there is nothing to organise you must memorise all and if one try guessing it's a failure most of the times and others that are just a matter of organisation like paying bills in Italy! 😊😊😊 This is why you must forgive me if I make mistakes writeing in english... 😂😂😂

In some countries the people are living from the tip. Cause they earn like 4€/h and the rest is coming from the tip. It has nothing to do with ur kindness to pay or not. You do pay them the salary. Same thing in Spain and Portugal. BUT the coperto it is not just a tip it is more a charge of occupieing the table. If u go in and u pay for a coffee but u stay all day long working on ur notebook this would be hard deal for the owner, so he charges u the coperto. By the way it comes from middle age, when people were bringing their own food to the food locations, eating therier homemade there. So they owner of the inns began to charge them a fee. So if u drink or eat or just sit u have to pay the fee when leaving. And can be from 1€ up to 5€. And what I don't understand is why US citizens always compare the world with the states. I mean for us, ur rules are really strange. I mean the whole world has meter and centimeters and degree Celsius but u do really math. But with the bills u r right. That's confusing even for us. 🤣😅

I could commiserate with you on 99% of those irritating Italian things! We just started saying "oh well, that's Italy"! But one thing different in Como is that the supermercati stay open all day. The only other thing that really gets me are the motociclette! Every time we are on the road is like a derby! They go between cars, right up the center line or on our right where we cannot see or hear them! Which is why I don't know if I'll ever drive here! Thanks for another great and informative video. A dopo!

Not sure if this is true. But my concern as a woman would be that Italian men feel they can just pat you on the ass even if they are strangers. That’s very scary and uncomfortable. Is that true to this day? It may be an older generational thing.

Dear friend you are an American that you have been living in Usa maybe for all of your life that it means you have an american culture and also you have your american routine about every aspect of your life. Now everything has been changed quickly so sometimes you get annoying because it s not easy to change every habits. Lets start :the way to count the floors in a building is the same in any country in the world, or the way to write a date so basically are american (usa) specifications. In America supermarkets are open 24 hours sometimes included Sunday. As a customer you are happy but you are also a worker. There is time to work and time to rest and time to spend with family and time to socialize with friends and collegues. A family shop cannot compete with a big shopping center in terms of employees In Usa is normal eating during lunchtime in front of a computer in italy we prefer go with collegues and eat something together . Different perspective quality of Life, vs money. Tips vs coperto . Bars are not charity shops, the service is never free. In the majority of the country is included in the price, in italy is separated. Usa has a special situation if you read in any touristic guide is written tips are mandatory and they are 15-20 % of the bill and even if you will be' not arrested and it is written that it is estremely rude if you don t give any money. That is not true but majority of the tourists follow the touristic suggestion. What do you think is an hidden price?, I think yes . Italian way to say "ogni mondo è paese". Cappuccino is an italian drink . We drink it for breakfast or for a snack during the day never after lunch of dinner. It sounds just weird. We think it tastes horrible after a proper meal. Food is part of our culture we enjoyng eating well and together. I live in England and here they say food is just petrol to have energy. Topic Sizes in shops Generally speaking shops want to make business they don t keep productthat they are hard to sell. American people usually have more muscles or are taller or fatter compare italians. Anyway good luck!

Hi Paolo, just a note that it IS considered extremely rude for someone not to leave a tip in the US. You would only leave nothing or only a few coins as a sign that you felt the service was terrible. So everyone really is expected to tip.

I am 100% Italian but what I really hate about my country is how racist it is becoming. Obviously you're a white male so it doesn't really affect you directly, but what do you think about the hate culture which has been recently brewing in Italy? What about a video about this issue?
@mimmiblu6138
@mimmiblu6138 4 года назад
@R& CO I strongly disagree, racist attacks have recently taken place in broad daylight, black people have been targeted just for the fact of being black. Stopping illegal immigration is sacrosanct, stripping people of their dignity because of the colour of their skin or their origin is a shame for the whole country.

@mimmi thanks for assuming my ethnicity, I’m actually both Latino and Caucasian. I think it’s a difficult subject because on one hand there are racists and on the other hand there have been a rise in specific types of crimes seemingly to be connected with certain groups. I don’t believe I’ll be making a video on this subject. Too complex with too many nuances that can too easily be misinterpreted. It’s a tricky situation and my heart goes out to people who’ve been effected by these issues as I and other family members and friends (non-Italian and Italian alike) have also been.

@Hello World no, regulationans about illegal immigration are sacrosanct in my opinion. People shouting on the underground to black legal immigrants (an Afro-American in this case), that they should go home in the most total indifference of the other passangers less so. Young children calling black children "piece of s**t... you're the same colour after all" and the parents look on and do not say anything. People insistently writing in comments that somebody isn't Italian even when one parent is Italian and they were born and brought up in Italy simply because the other parent is from Egypt, well that is way over the top and racist in my opinion.

Good point. I believe that racism in Italy is due to the lack of colonialism experience compared to other countries such as France, UK, Belgium, Germany and Holland whereas these countries are used to cooperate with different countries at institutional / social / cultural / political level. Not by chance, other countries with no colonialism experience like Austria and Switzerland are thought to be racist.

I think, not unique to Italy, that that is their biggest pet peeve about us, that some visit and just cannot comprehend or even realize they may be not only expecting but demanding this things be changeed to more American like. One problem can be solved by going to the American fast food restaurants in Italy, there will be absolutely no surprises. Yes, I found it odd that these restaurants are always packed. I was even graciously and friendly informed they like these restaruants. Who am I to judge ? I will add if I have the opportunity to know them better, I would return the courtesy and suggest to find and read the ingredients list. I do not know how current, but at one thime there was bleach added to fast food. I just don't see how that can be healthy.
