The Best Plant to Propagate to Start a Business or Get Tons of Free Plants! 

Not only a mother plant; my supermarket has no living plants, so I bought some cut fresh basil and popped the steps into water. A week later I had at least 5 rooted mini plants ready to go.

Last year I accidentally over planted my tomatoes and squash. I couldn't give them away, but I listed them for sale and sold every single one of them. This is excellent advice and I thank you for it. Have a blessed day!

I planted some strawberry seeds from some store bought strawberries and so far I have 11 that have germinated! So excited!!!

That’s wild!! I’ve been propagating it all winter. I find my Basil plant only wants to live for about 3-4 months in the winter so I take clippings on the 2nd month, root them, then plant the cuttings. I’m not selling Basil but it sure keeps me having fresh Basil all winter. 👍🏼

Luke a couple of months ago I planted 115 live oak trees from acorns from one of my trees just about all have sprouted. I have about 200 more live oak acorns and a 5 gallon bucket of white oak acorns that I will plant this spring I planted them in plastic picnic cups not really not much time involved other than watering every few days takes about 10 minutes. Last summer I bought 3 live oak trees 6 feet tall they cost a hundred dollars a piece. I have 2 acres I spread out a lot of pots Who knows maybe in couple of years a nursery might what to buy them whole sale. Thanks for the videos

I sell plants and produce every year for a side business. I took the last two years off because I went back to school and was too busy. I plan on selling produce this year and will start selling plants again next year. I enjoy it!

I started giving it a go before your video was over. I only took 5 cuttings on my large basil plant that was looking worn and had already gone to flower on Nov.14 2023, zone 8a. I just brought it in from outside one week ago. Also, took some peppermint cuttings the same way to check them out. Thanks for the informative video. I use those Jello snack containers for 2 1/2" pots...just poke 3 holes in the bottom for drainage.

I make my own pots from old newspapers so pots have no cost there is some great videos out there on how to make them and you can just drop them in the ground and they compost away

I know that done right, a garden is a huge resource for any family. But too many people just don't know how to do things without spending cash anymore. People have forgotten how to make do with what is available in their homes and enviroment.

I have started researching on how to start a plant business. I am still deciding if I want to sell veggies or home plants but this is some great information thank you I love your videos MI gardener they are always very informative.

This is also easily done with tomatoes. Just snip off a sucker. It starts rooting in a couple days.

👍Yes, growing plants is a common thing esp. here in central FL. Lots of neighboring nurseries have gotten big from seeds or cutting.

I just started propagating last year with lots of failures but many surprise successes! Everyone needs to try this! Air Layering works, I cloned a Maple shoot! Want an Apple tree? Blueberry bush? Dont use a fruit born seed because genetics will work against you. Find a friend's successful tree and air-layer it! Also, if you are looking for farmers market opportunities, go see what others are selling -- then plant something else! I grew tons of things last year to see what works, scrapping most of them this year. Narrow it down to a handful of good niche plants you find easy to grow and become good at it. San Marzano Tomatoes are hard to find -- MI Gardner carries these! also, in the cabbage family, try Bok Choi, Moi Choi, Chinese Mustard (Pak Choi) which nobody sells at markets and is delicious. Pak is my favorite. I see lots of new things on MiG, better get shopping.

Great idea! Sometimes my basil gets overgrown and it’s nice to have another alternative of what to do with the “extra”.

Not to mention the more exotic varieties can fetch a higher price. Especially purple basil. Local Thai restaurants will happily purchase Thai basil too.

Another good tip is to make sure that no matter how much space you grow on, you should be averaging $2.50 per square foot. If you were to scale that up, that's already $100k per acre! Just a simple way to break it down :)

I am in Australia, Perth , Western Australia to be exacter. Great to hear your positive approach and hopefully the basil I am growing will be a successful herb. If it doesn't sell , I can give it away I am sure, but I get a kick out of small victories in our garden. Always love the videos. Propagation is a win-win, forcing needed pruning for healthier plant growth, and free plants. It is also a way of preserving plants, bushes, and trees that are no longer available in the standard market place. Besides the herbs, this spring I will be also propagating roses, camellias, nandina, and geraniums. Also, taking a cutting from a plant at a special place while visiting, or a friends garden (always with permission) is a cool way to honor your friend, or remember a trip - for example all the boxwood hedges I have came from one cutting during the Bishop's Tea one Sunday afternoon in the South Gardens at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC now 35 years.

I am currently at the stage where I am applying for a city grant for my garden small business , I was debating on a loan , and currently pricing out everything I need to get going with what I have. I have a ton of aloe plants and succulents and I am propagating those and taking the pups to sell them for more money later down the road and doing 15 micro dwarf tomato’s inside my house this fall to harvest the seeds from all of them to sell 😎

I would also suggest, when propagating ANY herb or plant, to chop off all but the TOP 4-6 (baby's sprouting included) that way your plant isn't focused on trying to provide for the 'sucker-like' larger leaves and it will focus on rooting, as some plants will go through some shock after being cut. Not all, some.)

Just had a live bunch I bought from grocery store, I got 9 clippings from and put in water. I love fresh basil so I'm gonna end up planting these in my small Garden. I'm not great with plants but Basil is Easy to grow. Never had any problem with them. ( I've normally only had 2 or 3 plants though.) Hope all comes out well. Maybe I can make a few bucks in my area, or at least barter, trading for other fresh fruits or veggies someone else grows . 😊🍇🍉🍎🍐🍑🍓🍅🥑🥔🥕🍆🌽🥦🥒🌶👋

I had no idea you could propagate basil this way! I started growing some of my own produce a few years ago, I'm planning to get my own homestead of sorts within the next twelve months and find a way to make a living off plants. Oh and people here in Belgium love basil as well 😋💚

I had probably 6 different basil plants from doing this. Calikim did one of those videos last sumer. Anyway, I had enough basil plants to harvest 6 cups of basil leaves to make pesto for my dinner. And 6 more cuttings to do what Luke just talked about. Yeah! More free basil.☺🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

I love this video!!! great advice luke. right now im in the process on growing tomatos ( the tomatoes i bought from you)indoors in my 2 bedroom apt my goal is to have a room dedicated to the tomatos, Ive been trying to grow tomatos for about 2 yrs now and have spent over $2000 in trial and error with gardening lol. I have gone through having my 3month old tomato plant stem's getting really thin at the base and just topping over (not cool) have dealt with a swarm of fungus gnats, the stench of stale water at the bottom of my resovoir and having to move my plants outside to the balcony and then a storm comes and just destroys the plants. I have failed over and over growing in my grow room. and when i finally had a successful plant that gave me tomatos blight killed it. Im glad i was able to film that plant. But 2020 is the year that I will finally have me apartment grown tomatos. It was my new years resolution. I have a costoluto and I think a tigerella that are making it and are about 2 months old and two cherokee purple seeds have germinated. Crossing my fingers. I will calculate how much it cost me to grown them and relay all that information to whomever is interested. My goal is to be a tomato specialist....and start me a 3-5 person CSA from my apartment

Great video! Thanks for the advice! For me personally, propagating plants seems rather easy. Selling them is the harder part, I would say. How do you sell them? Who is going to buy from a private grower? Why would they not just buy from a professional mass producer?

I have a lovely front garden built on propagation I learned on "Mike Kincaid " channel. Neighbors would stop and admire and I'd say , I can dig and pot u one for 7 or 8 bucks. Meanwhile 3 pallets going, (sold-waiting to be sold n growing....) inside the fence. Now people stop n place orders n chat n ask for advice. My share is.....besides propagation of basil.....try petunias n Hydrangea, they are super easy to start n crazy popular. But if I had to pick 1.... sell vines u start from seed... they grow tall quickly nww have high perceived value if only on teepee trellis u make from sticks u can get 20-35 all day long.

In the UK they sell lots of basil plants in a tiny pot at the supermarket for £0.50 to £1.50. Each pot has like 10+ plants the size of the ones that are in front of you. I make take these pick up the strongest replant, cut the rest and freeze for cooking purposes. Saves me a fortune! £1++ for a packet of seeds, but it saves me germination space - I have limited germination space. Edit: You can buy a packet of fresh herbs for £0.20 and propagate them. I have a lovely thyme plant in my cold frame via this process.

Concerning where the fish are?, the huckleberry s?..in MT..I tell anyone who will ask.. 1st of all I don’t own these things..fish in the lake or river or huckleberry in the mountains..God does..and really 90% of the people will not go and get them.l and the 10% that do great..!!they got out of the house, office..
