Nice rundown on the main types of sheet goods. I spent 19 years in North Carolina in wholesale plywood and hardwood distribution. The variety of panel types and sizes that are available is huge. For a hobby woodworker like myself it was like working in the candy store.

I've struggled to find suppliers for sheet goods, and didn't know some of these existed. Any advice on how a hobbyist can source these materials? Great video.
@TodaysCraftsmen
@TodaysCraftsmen 5 месяцев назад
That’s a tough one! A lot of this stuff is most readily available through plywood specific suppliers which most likely require a business to open an account. Check your local lumberyards and make friends with local cabinetmakers! Where are you located?
@mburke1211
@mburke1211 5 месяцев назад
@@TodaysCraftsmen I'm in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. There are lots of Sawyers around, so I have no trouble sourcing hardwoods and dimensional lumber. They're just aren't many suppliers of sheet goods.

I did a quick search and didn’t see much very promising. R.S. Monger & Sons Inc. is a Weyerhaeuser distributor so they may be able to order in certain things if they don’t stock them. They’re in Harrisonburg. Find a local cabinet shop and ask where they buy!

I always amazes me how much you know and how easily you explain it. I struggle with finding a good supplier of "baltic" birch. I don't use big quantities - a sheet here and a sheet there.

Jeff great info thank you. I'm a hobby wood worker and like to do projects myself but this is invaluable information. I wanted to build a shelving unit to go in between a chimney and wall with MDF but you clarified that screws and dowels wouldn't be strong enough. For something like what I want to do is the the veneer core best since I wanted to hang it on the wall? Thanks again...🤘🤘🤘
@TodaysCraftsmen
@TodaysCraftsmen 5 месяцев назад
Thank you! I’d go with veneer core for a clear finish or pluma ply for painted!

Thanks for use cases for the various manufactured wood types. That long set of storage cabinets in the walnut looking veneer looks really nice. Nice install. I was a little disappointed that you didn't include HDO in your line up. Ha! I've got a bunch left from an old shop project that I need to make into storage cabinets. Or road signs.

Follow up -- you mentioned example of finished end panels (walnut eg) attached to UV tops/bottoms, do clients balk when you use hardwood veneered sides but UV coated tops and bottoms, ie the interiors have different material and finishes?
@TodaysCraftsmen
@TodaysCraftsmen 5 месяцев назад
They can balk all they want but if they don’t want an applied end panel… beggars can’t be choosers! 😜
@LuisSanchez-wf9zw

Forgot to ask…what do you guys do to sand off the pre-finish side for prepping it to paint it? What grits do you sand it off on your Maple prefinished veener ply?
@TodaysCraftsmen
@TodaysCraftsmen 5 месяцев назад
Hey, Luis. We typically don’t get into a situation where we would be painting a side that was pre-finished but if we had to we would sand the UV finish off using say 80 or 100 grit and then sand to 150 or 180 prior to primer.
@LuisSanchez-wf9zw

What’s your take on combi core plywood? When you said plumaply it made me think of it. Is this good for islands that need to hold the weight of the countertop or what you recommend for double oven cabinets and heat? And you said c2 is for carcass builds but I thought most kitchen manufacturers use B grade veneer plywoods?
@TodaysCraftsmen
@TodaysCraftsmen 5 месяцев назад
I’ve never actually used combi-core! I’m not sure how it would hold up in terms of strength but I’m sure it stays flatter than veneer core. I could be wrong about the grading on the prefin!

Are you sure the Garnica product has " HDF" on the faces. My experience has been it's a chippy version of good MDF.
@TodaysCraftsmen
@TodaysCraftsmen 5 месяцев назад
🤷🏼‍♂️ it’s printed on the side and in all the literature I’ve seen for the product. We’ve had good experience with it, no chipping.

@chrisgardner3606 5 месяцев назад
Thanks. I'm gonna have to revisit that product.
@TodaysCraftsmen
@TodaysCraftsmen 5 месяцев назад
Id say it’s a little more fragile on the very edge vs regular HDF since the HDF veneer is only maybe 3/32” thick
@chrisgardner3606
@chrisgardner3606 5 месяцев назад
@@TodaysCraftsmen OK now you're talking about the results I've experienced. It appears to be more coarse and tends to chip-out on the back side of a cut if your blade is not fresh. The edge seems fragile and requires more work in the paint booth. I wish it used a better grade of MDF then it would be worth the dinero!
@TodaysCraftsmen
@TodaysCraftsmen 5 месяцев назад
Gotta keep those blades sharp! 😜 I put 1mm maple banding on the stuff I’m working on now.

how does your edgebander work? I am looking for one and was thinking about a cehisa flexy, its small enough to fit where I want to put it, not sure if I should go with that or something else I have looked into a bunch of them
