The Furman SS6b is a metal power strip and surge suppressor designed with musicians in mind. There is a bunch of confusion though about how these types of strips compare to power conditioners costing much more. This quick video addresses some of the very basics of planning your power setup and where a strip like this would be appropriate.

I've been using them for years' have 3. The only complaint I have with them is ' the lay out of the plugins when using power adapters for effect pedals, you can plug the adapters in side by side but not straight across from each other. They should have flipped the plugins that are straight across from the other ones around so there's enough room to plug in 6 9/12 or 18 volt adapters instead of 3.

Have you seen the plug-lock model they make specifically for wall-wart adapters? They are great if you have to deal with bunch of them at once - amzn.to/49eKfgt - that's an ad link. Thanks for checking out the video!

Nice 👍🏼 Are you running your wing on a batter backup? I’ve used TrippLite batteries since the early 01v96 days and they’ve saved a few shows for sure over the years. Really enjoy your videos, thanks for watching mine ✌🏼

@@DcSoundOp Hi 👋 I do have a UPS at home but never on the road, I mostly tour around Quebec and we have some of the best power central ever made, voltage drops or simply outage are non existent here. Also, most festivals run on generators when the grid is not available and those are also really solid power source I’m really flattered that you watch my videos, we should do a colab one day. Have a great day!

I mean I’ve always just used a regular ol surge protected power strip, but theyre made for computer stuff I guess so I suppose they’re of higher quality than some random thing But I’ve been fine thankfully! 😅

Thanks for the review. I have been using the Belkin F9D1000-15, which is a similar metal construction, MOV surge suppression, and 15 ft cord. Primary differences is the Belkin has 10 outlets and is $35. The housing is dark grey, vs black. It also has 2 'wings' that stick out each side. These are a blessing/curse. If you are mounting them under a desk, road case, etc, it is easier to drill a couple of mounting holes in these tabs, rather than trying to line up the keystone mounting holes, which I think are one of the most evil mounting methods ever invented! However, if you are not mounting them, the square edges of these tabs are sharp and will rip a hole in your favorite cargo shorts (ask me how I know). A little time with a Leatherman file or a bench grinder will round them off in short order.

I had a couple of those Belkins mounted over a workbench years ago, loved them for that. Not sure where those got to actually 🤔 Thanks for the message & for watching!

Here’s a link to the belkins - a lot of folks will also recognize them from Casey Neistat’s NYC studio walls - (not an affiliate link) www.amazon.com/dp/B000BVC0WO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_gl_i_66HQ41TCS9NSM57N0R8G

My go-to power strip. I only wish it had a couple more outlets. 8 would be perfect.

@@DcSoundOphi, can I plug in my 2 RCF 905s AS mk2 (which are 2200 W class D amplifier) into this Furman power strip without them shutting off because of pulling too much power out of the strip?

How do you like this compared to the SS-6B PRO? It has EVS - Extreme Voltage Shutdown. Is it worth the extra $35 for this feature?
@DcSoundOp
@DcSoundOp 2 года назад
I haven't looked at the 6B PRO personally, but if you don't have some type of over voltage protection up-stream of these in your system, I would think that would be a good idea to add for sure. Going into commercial buildings, gov buildings and hotel ballrooms, you can easily get really spicy voltages to work with. A strip with over or under voltage warnings or protection can certainly help anyone who's not in the practice of metering the power before plugging in on gigs.

Would be better if the Ground was wired in Star configuration instead of looped.

Looks like it's parallel, yeah it would have been nice if all 3 were wired Star configuration instead of parallel. Which is the main reason I'm here, glad he took off the cover to expose wiring. Now I know...

I get a lot of noise in my home studio. My house has pretty dirty power as the wiring kinda sucks. Would this help?
@DcSoundOp
@DcSoundOp 5 месяцев назад
Hey, thanks for the question. A unit like this won't really do anything to correct for bad power in that sense. Before buying any power conditioners or studio-specific solutions, I would try to find a local electrician to help you figure out the cause and see if anything can be done to improve the power. Sometimes it can be a simple fix.

@@DcSoundOpvery good how to do that?

I do not recommend this power strip for audio use. It noticeably reduces the dynamics of my headphones/speakers when I connect a dac or amp to this. Music sounds very compressed. AB'd multiple times to confirm compared to a belkin strip. Maybe more expensive furmans are better but this one's trash for what it's marketed as.
@DcSoundOp
@DcSoundOp Год назад
Very interesting... can you tell us more about this compression you are hearing & what gear you are using?
@sy0635
@sy0635 Год назад
@@DcSoundOp My hp setup is topping e50 -> GL mk2 -> anandas. Soundstage shrinks, all frequencies sound noticeably muted. This happens whether I plug in my dac or amp. Compression is the best way to describe it. Robs the music of all dynamics.
@DcSoundOp
@DcSoundOp Год назад
Okay, I really don't like to get into audiophile debates, nor do I like to tell anyone that what they are hearing is not correct. With that said, it is very hard to understand how you could be experiencing not only dynamics changes, but also what sounds like a change in frequency response AND the stereo width shrinking... all from a power strip. The equipment you listed is all operating at low DC voltage. That DC voltage is being provided by external power supplies (5v for the DAC and it looks like two rails, + and - 16VDC for the amplifier.) If a MOV inside a power strip is causing adverse performance of either of these under normal operation, there is something significantly wrong with either the gear or your incoming power feed from the wall. Otherwise, there is nothing that should be causing the MOV to act in normal use. Like I said, I'm not saying what you are hearing isn't happening, just that this power strip wouldn't be the reason under normal circumstances.
