Glad you brought up Etsy. Not only is there a ton of work involved, but new stores now have to pay $15 to open and the chances of getting shut down permanently right off the bat are pretty high.

I am successful on ETSY. No shutdown. Don't try to sell trademarked items and you are good to go. Be original. It certainly takes all the hassle away with regards to customer service etc. passive means just that. Create product, list it and go. Check your statistics, do some advertising. It's not free. No real business is.

I'm just starting to look into POD and Etsy was not even a consideration. I'm not even in the POD business yet and I've heard horror story after horror story already about Etsy.
@annieparry5544

I've been making mug designs (mostly) since late last year and putting them on Etsy using Printful for production. I've had zero sales. My designs do not come up in Google searches at all. I could pay extra for Etsy to promote them (read Etsy's small print if you're thinking about doing that). The price I have to sell them at is way too high already without having to pay Etsy extra for paid promotion. I've slashed the price to 16GPB and I will just about make about 1.50GP on each one IF I sell one on Etsy after Printful, Etsy and postage have all been taken out. IMPORTANT I had a listing pulled because although I had Printful set up in Etsy for my production partner, I forgot to tick the production partner box when I went to send the item live out of the drafts folder so be mindful of that.

Hey sorry for just getting back to you on this, been slammed lately! I'll see if I can put together a new video with the best application tips, but here's the one I made previously and it all still holds true today: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sKP0AOVbiq8.html The only main changes are that they've become more selective than years ago, a lot of it has to do with timing of application unfortunately, and that you can reapply as many times as needed by using a different email address (I've spoken to a lot of people now who have been accepted on their 2nd/3rd/7th/etc try applying with a different email address). Once you're in, you're in, and it's well worth it to spend the effort on the front end. If worst comes to worst and you can't get in, you can definitely still build up a very solid income stream from Teepublic and Redbubble alone.

Its been a relief to see that there is a difference between active and passive POD. I had no idea! All ive known about is the active model and honestly its been overwhelming to take the plunge. I could see myself starting the passive model in the next couple of weeks. One question: many gurus in the active model recommend setting up an LLC once things get going well. Is that needed for the passive model? Seems to me like its more gig or commission based kinda like DoorDash. What do you recommend and do you have a video addressing this topic? I am very interested in the Amazon Merch site. My wife buys a ton to clothes and tshirts for the kids but i hear it can be hard to get accepted. Any more detailed info on them is appreciated as well.
@GregGottfried
@GregGottfried 4 месяца назад
I totally agree, and that's great to hear it's helpful seeing the difference. Great question on the LLC. In short, no you don't need one for Passive POD, but once you get to $50k/yr profit, it starts to be beneficial in keeping things organized. Here's a video on that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NbV-awn1lng.html If you run into any questions as you get rolling just let me know!

@@GregGottfried Do you need to make a business name on Merch by Amazon? Should I use my personal Amazon account or set up a new account with business email even if I'm not an LLC? Can that even be done without getting into trouble with the gov for selling under another name, etc? So many nuances and variables! I found your video from 4 yrs ago on how to get accepted. Any new info on that front?
@GregGottfried
@GregGottfried 4 месяца назад
No worries! With print on demand, we're more like a freelancer being paid commissions or royalties, rather than being the actual business ourselves (that's the POD websites themselves). So you can come up with your own name, you don't have to formally register it or anything. And you can use personal email addresses and all. I hope that's helpful!

I buy from Tee Public all the time, and for years. If the artist side is half as good as the buyer side, it’s worth it-and nothing is really passive POD; you’ve still got to make and manage your designs. You’re just not physically printing and shipping; you’re doing the real work instead of the boring, time consuming work. (One of my kids prefers Red Bubble as a customer. Their quality is good, too.)

One of the things that I have learned from Greg is that when you follow his advice to carefully choose a low competition sub-niche, then create 20-40 designs for that niche, you WILL get noticed/on the first few pages. If you pick a high competition niche, then you will definitely get lost in the abyss!

It's against the Terms of Service. If Amazon finds out, they can (and will) terminate your account. I've been a MBA seller since 2017 and have seen this from people many times. There is sort of a loophole in that an Amazon Merch account could be counted as a business asset, and if you sell the business then the Merch account goes with it but I don't know how well that works because I don't personally know anyone whose done it.

@Greg I have set up my store on Tee Public using your step by step. I am in apprentice phase according to Tee Public apprentices do not come up in their search engine there is basically no sales coming to the store. What's your advice.
@GregGottfried
@GregGottfried 3 месяца назад
Nice! And no worries about the apprentice label. All new accounts start out with that label and once they see you’re not a bot spamming the platform or breaking the terms your account will automatically change 👍
@MrMontanaNights
@MrMontanaNights 2 месяца назад
@@GregGottfried No, it doesn't. Nothing about the process is automatic. I've had a TeePublic account since 2018. Got downgraded last November simply because they are greedy. No reason to otherwise downgrade an account that was making hundreds of dollars a month using unique, niche-specific designs that sold very well. It's a bit insulting that they downgraded me in fact, considering I'm a professional artist with a proven track record of making them money. In 2022 they even assigned me a personal "assistant" to help me upload more stuff, only for them to downgrade me a year later. They've shot themselves in the foot with this policy.

Yeah it's good to see your name pop up! They made some big company vision changes (with new management) and started catering to established creators (essentially they went to Active POD). I replaced them with Teepublic in my process.

Does your logo have to be trademarks. I read your logo can be taken ?
@GregGottfried
@GregGottfried 4 месяца назад
Great question. If you made the design yourself, you technically own the copyright to it informally by being the original work creator. This means if someone copies your design, you can email the POD website and report it. They will look to see that you uploaded it first, and that it is in fact a copy, and they will remove it. If you wanted to go further, you can formally protect your designs for about $500 each with the government.. I've done it in the past and I dont recommend it.. The only difference is if you need to go to court (would not likely ever get to this point), you would be able to show proof of formal protection filed. I hope that makes sense and helps!

If you want to be successful you need to upload as many as you can until you start to gain traction. 1 per week is way to low if you hope to see any real money from the process.

I've still got the same recommendations from this video a couple years ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sKP0AOVbiq8.html I haven't heard any buzz about big changes for their app. I think the biggest thing is knowing that you can re-apply as many times as you need by using a different email address each time. I hope you get in!
