Resurrecting this account to say it's an honor to top the rankings! Great content all around, Alan. We've been playing the channel on our new big screen inside clubhouse since it's such a great representation of golf in Western NC and region. Thanks for all the support and hope to see everyone this season out on the course!
Ayy much love friends! And thank YOU for all of the unbelievable memories each time I get out there. Hopefully will get the chance to get out there again soon!
Wow! What a great video!! I'm in the CLT area, retired since 2020 and play golf, 4/5 times a month. I've played both the Lake Lure courses and concur with your assessment of each. I've also played Mt Mithchell and was somewhat disappointed as the day I played, the were recovering from rain the previous 2 days. I'll look forward to chalking these other courses off my list! IF you're down toward Shelby in Cleveland County, check out River Bend a great value and a fun course
My buds and I really enjoy and appreciate your videos. We do a western North Carolina trip every fall and we’ve really been utilizing your videos to evaluate courses. Your “best of WNC” video is invaluable!! Thanks so much!! DH
Probably the best/most comprehensive list of its kind on RU-vid, very professionally done. Sequoyah was far and away my #1 Public course until I played Harbour Town last week. Keep up the great vids, and next time you get to head down to NE Georgia, we’ll have to tee it up sometime
Cheers man! Wanted to make sure it was something that lasted for a few years and people who still find it relevant. And oh man I NEED to get down to Hilton Head soojn
played sequoyah. what a course. played right after it opened and it was pristine.second time it was a goat ranch. but i hear it was from a bad course super. hear its great again. worth every penny
Never been to NC, but I would love to go and golf some of these courses. I play Phx, AZ and So. Cal dessert courses. No tree mostly. Thank you for opening my eyes to the beautiful courses NC has to offer.
I am from Florida but we vacation up that way a lot. Was just in Asheville last week and played Reems Creek for the first time. Loved the views, greens are tricky when you don’t know the course. Played Maggie Valley, Mount Mitchell, and Wolf Laurel as a kid back in the 1980’s. Will have to try more of these next time I am up that way.
Great job putting this together, and great editing as always! I’ve been lucky enough to play most of your top eight, will definitely have to try Sequoia.
Great work and I'm going to take your advice. We're playing NC in April and I'm going to move our trip to the west and focus on your top 5. The views you provide in the video are convincingly great! Nice swing and driving btw!
Oh HECK YEAH! Make sure you let the guys at Sequoyah know! They're huge fans of the channel and always love when people tell them they found the course from the video!
@@PerfectlyAverageGolf I will for certain! Keep up the great work, I’m glad I found you! I’ll be going down to Myrtle to play King’s North this weekend, and your vlog on the course is how I found you, even though I’m fairly local to Asheville.
Give olde Beau in roaring gap a play if you ever have the time I know that’s not western NC but if you like mountain courses that’s a must play in the NC area
This is a awesome list as I am moving to Lexington NC from Florida in the next few months. If you’re out there sometime, would love to catch a round with you. Cheers and hit ‘em straight
Definitely enjoyed Sequoyah and Maggie Valley when we played it a few years ago. Need to make a trip back to that area. I, like you, loved Mt Mitchell and the views but the crabgrass has been a problem the two times I’ve been and takes away from the beauty. I’ll have to check out Springdale. Great video and you’ve given me a few new options for my yearly October trip.
sequoyah is next level. played it twicw. once it was in perfect shape, next time was awful shape. don't know wht,but good to know it's back. that first hole is something else man
Great video, thanks. I am usually in the Boone area when I go out to the mountains. Nice to get a handle on what's out there to play farther west. I was guessing Sequoyah was #1. I enjoyed your plays there. That's actually how I found your channel. I am building Sequoyah National in the PGATour 2K23 game and was looking for a video to help me learn the course.
@@PerfectlyAverageGolf Will do! It has been slow going unfortunately as I actually work on the game, so getting the time to do my own projects can be tough. It also feels like I am still working so I dont tend to do alot of course building in my free time. LOL Should be news coming out today regarding the next game update/Season 2 of the Clubhouse Pass. 2 new official courses coming soon, both of which I built!
I don't know of courses on the Knoxville side of the Smokies but I can say with certainty if you come 40 Eastbound down 26 South that Sequoyah is BY FAR your best option for courses even including those in the Greenville Area in SC
I actually have back when it was called High Vista before the rebrand. Have not played it since their "remodel" but I haven't heard anyhting particularly great about it since their revamp. I'd consider it more of a risk than anything else. Would definitely suggest going with one of the tried-and-true courses in the T5 here if you're looking for spots!
@PerfectlyAverageGolf thanks for the reply. Seems like a lot of the nicer courses are upwards of an hour away from Asheville. Since I am staying in Asheville, I need to figure out if it's worth the drive...
@@drbgt3 Yeah if you're restricting yourself to JUST Asheville I'd do Reems Creek and Omni (even though its pricey). If you're willing to drive just a touch I'd add Laurel Ridge and Maggie Valley. If you want something you'll never forget take the hike and enjoy the drive to Sequoyah; you won't regret it.
@@PerfectlyAverageGolf 7! Hit a 4 iron up the hill, didnt see it go in. Walked up to the green wondering where my ball was and did the famous "check the hole!" What a great day ha
Great reviews of the area! I live here and still need to scratch off 4 of these courses of the list. How do I get your job reviewing courses like this? 😂
Never played Sequoyah or Laurel Ridge but I played all the others when I was playing every week or even twice a week. If you rate with dollar value all these I have Reems Creek at #1, Connestee at #2, Apple Valley at #3. Grove Park is not in my top 15. Mt. Mitchell was puke when I last played it. The workers and people who run it don’t keep it up. Leaves all over the fairways and the grass was full of weeds. You should get up in the northwestern mountains more. There are a bunch of beautiful course near Boone, Blowing Rock, Jefferson, and Banner Elk. Mountain Glen is a short gem in Newland. Jefferson Landing in Jefferson is lush and in the clouds. Grassy Creek in Spruce Pine is very well manicured and reasonably priced. Too many to list but western North Carolina has by far the most scenic and manicured courses of anywhere in the south.
Good shouts, since moving to CLT I don't have as much easy access but I'll add them all to my list for when I'm in that area again! Also, def go play Sequoyah or Laurel, they are both unreal
This is my reaction EXACTLY. I've been lucky enough to play some decent rounds out there but I could not care less about the score when your surrounded by the views that course has to offer
I normally think of Western NC as Asheville and west of that. Mountain Glen would be like a Northern NC type thing, haven't ventured out that far yet tbh
@@PerfectlyAverageGolf Say what? Dude Mountain Glen is also far western NC. Western NC starts at Hickory, NC. NC is 500 miles long. Divide 500 by 3 see what you get. Hell Charlotte could be western.
I always tell people to stay away from that course. It's also in terrible shape and the prices are ridiculous compared to the conditions. It was the closest course to where I was living before I moved to Charlotte and I hated how much I still had to go there because nothing else was close
@@PerfectlyAverageGolf it ate my lunch but we were there for the weekend but got rained out on sat afternoon. they refunded part of out fee. it was in good shape back then, just soaked
27 holes and none are memorable. loved the service tho and they make a pretty good steak, which was included in the price. but that was 20 years ago@@PerfectlyAverageGolf
@@PerfectlyAverageGolf I would love to move to that area within the next few years and dream of living/playing at Champion Hills. I was excited to see your video there.
@@PerfectlyAverageGolf would love a follow up video on those. Would be a good summer project to get out and play them all and see how they stack up to your western NC list!
Mt. Mitchell is under contract and we are hopeful the new owner/superintendent will be working hard to take care of crab grass and overall maintenance.
Sad to see Mt Mitchell go downhill over the years. Ive lived near it my entire life and in the 90s and early 2000s it was always 4.5 star course in amazing shape. Holes 12-15 still could be one of the hardest stretchs of holes in WNC
@@PerfectlyAverageGolf I moved away from the area some years ago, and when I returned to play the course at Mount Mitchell, i couldn't believe it. In the 80's, this course was absolutely pristine. That said, I am confident the new ownership team are headed in the right direction. I was surprised Etowah was not on the list and further north Mountain Glen and Grassy Creek can be a lot fun, too.
Mountain Glen and Grassy Creek were too far out of the range unfortunately and if you think Mt Mitchell went down hill you don't even want to see Etowah, place is in AWFUL shape and the staff is so unfriendly
@@PerfectlyAverageGolf Man, I hate to hear that about Etowah. They used to host the first round of our conference HS golf tournament my JR/SR years. Second round was at Black Mountain (we won't talk about that). I just recall Etowah being a superb test. If I recall like 7-8 of the original 18 had par 4's over 400 yards, and from the tips, the yardage was pushing 7,000 ---- an unheard-of total in WNC in 1984. Long ago there was a golf card that was available (put out by The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, I believe) that had a lot of great WNC courses. I recall Waynesville CC, Laurel Ridge, Connestee Falls, Reems Creek, Mount Mitchell, Grassy Creek, Maggie Valley, Crooked Creek, Etowah, the old Hilton course, Grove Park, Cummings Cove, Mountain Aire, Springdale, Cleghorn, Black Mountain, Sapphire, and a few others I've probably forgot... but back in the day, our golf group bought the card instead of joining a club just to get the variety. It was a fabulous deal, and some of the courses offered more than 1 round.
You really need to add Balsam Mountain Preserve on this list. Course is private but allows 16 non members a day to play. The course is an Arnold Palmer design. The only negative about the place is that a round is $275.00
Probably worth mentioning that Mt. Mitchell is CART PATH ONLY no matter what. isnt a bad thing as ive been playing there for years. but could be a turn off for some people.
