It would seem that Colt has reintroduced, again, the 6940 monolithic rail rifle. It was probably one of Colt's best designs but it disappeared for a while, popped back up for a bit, then went away again. It now seems like it's back give how many CR prefix 6940's I'm seeing online.

That's way too much. The SBR I recently built cost me $500 without the optic and it's more reliable than any weapon I was ever issued in the military. 10K... no jams or malfunctions. I don't get why gun guys spend so much on rifles. Invest in good glass, training, and metalworking classes. If you buy parts in America, many either match or exceed mil spec. Why buy a Colt or Daniel Defense when a competitor builds to the exact same specifications. I'm a welder and machinist. Brand names mean nothing. Modern American manufacturing is widespread. If I go mill out an AR lower from a block of aluminum, it will be the exact same quality as a name brand down to the molecular level.

If CZ/Colt were smart, they'd release a few different versions of this rifle. A 14.5"/16" barrel (medium weight, continuous tapper, midlength gas, low profile gas block), and extend the rail out to 12.5"-13". Another version with a 14.5"/16" barrel (medium weight, continuous tapper, midlength gas) but keep the folding front sight with a 9" rail. If they really wanted to bring in the bucks, make a .300BLK pistol version in 10.3" for those wanting a small but ridged .300blk rifle. They could also machine some of the picatinny away, similar to a Geissele MK4, and shave weight while keeping the picatinny where you need it. Filling the rest of the space with MLOK.

I think the replaceable cam surface is a carry over from the piston version. DI guns don't really have any wear on that area since the gas unlocks the bolt but the piston guns actually depend on the cam surface to unlock. An interesting item of note, I researched the aforementioned Pat.# and nowhere on the Patent Application was any one from LMT (Karl Lewis, etc...) mentioned. Like you said, these Colts (6940) are extremely reliable, accurate and durable...I've got 10K+ rounds through mine and it's just as accurate as the day I purchased it from Bud's...for $1,351.00!

It also has its own proprietary straight gas tube. This straight gas tube produces a more linear recoil than the traditional carbine stepped style. If your an experience shooter you will notice that the monolithic‘s recoil straight back with less muzzle slip. Awesome design. The barrel nut is also unique. It allows a self centering of the barrel and is independent from the gas tube so max torque can be used consistently from Gun to Gun. This also increases accuracy.

@GrendalTheBeasty

A question I frequently have as well. I have a $500 PSA, and an Aero Precision build that costs about what this costs and know plenty of people with Daniel Defense rifles. The only difference I've been able to find between them other than furniture is the coating. The spot where the charging handle latch locks in gets worn off faster on the PSA while the others seem about the same. PSA does have lower QC in general, much higher chance of getting a crooked gun. I lucked out and mine is totally straight (fixed front sight) but my PSA AK-103 was crooked as can be. Both guns have a few thousand rounds through them at this point, no reliability issues. Same can't be said for the previously mentioned AK-103.

I feel like anyone who knows a thing or two about ARs could build one for the same price that shoots better, has a match trigger in it, and will have a modular free float rail system on it. I mean it has a standard issue collapsible stock, 1350 for that and a milspec trigger? Come on man...

The front sight base has a bayonet lug, but doesn't have the hole for a swivel. The swivel hole would be very useful because it allows you to add a rail for a light or laser.

@@EdwardSnortin Handguard is short and wide with minimal real estate. The sight mount holds the laser closer to the bore axis and does not consume handguard space. I'd also like to see this rifle with a midlength gas tube and longer handguard... another way to fix the issue.

When I purchased mine I got a good deal on it though, it was on sale for $1,200, when it had been going for $1,400 since it was released. So I was happy about that. I always intended on putting an ACOG on it, and the store I purchased the gun at happend to have one top of the line ACOG on sale for $1,000 (typically $1,200) so I jumped on that too. Man, something about this rifle is just so nostalgic even though it is technically “new”. I always thought the 6940 is the rifle the U.S. Army should have sourced instead of adding the Knights Armament rail to the M4. Just watching this video with Tim using an Aimpoint optic on that Colt made me think of the perfect PB&J/peas and carrots combo. I could “smell the cordite”. This is the rifle/optic combo we should have had for GWOT.

That was the presumption many people made. The truth is closer to the market was flooded with companies producing M4geries so Colt just narrowed it's production capacity to feeding their current Foreign Military Sales contracts with the US State Department. Now that Colt is under CZ ownership CZ can leverage exclusive rights to the Mono forging for the 6940 from the foundries they sent the upper forging data pack to along with every other business relationship Colt had with their subcontractors. Subcontractors like Microbest, Schmid, and others for parts made to the specification package Colt had sent them previously. Because CZ is more financially secure than the investor group that owned and raided Colts profits away from Colt rather than reinvesting in Colt CZ will keep the Colt name humming out the same firearms Colt has been producing for nearly 30 years along with releasing some models that had been held close to the vest.
