I use a knife with removable blades for my pastel and charcoal pencils. When you get used to it there is hardly nothing wasted. I do have the M & R but the other method works better for me.😊

I tried the knife method but never got the hang of it. I'm glad you found a way to sharpen fragile pencils Jennie. ✏️

So thorough! Thank you! I'll probably keep sharpening my softer stuff with a boxcutter, but it's nice to have a good sharpener and replacement blades for quick and easy sharpening when out of doors. I bought all that stuff using your links. Thank you. Impressive.

I appreciate the support Pelle! Thanks for watching. I would use the boxcutter method if I had more confidence using larger blades. Nothing wrong with using what works for you.

Screws are not too soft,They are 100% hardened steel. Screwdrivers though, always come with the hardest steel. That beinf saidm the ONLY way, to damage a screw, is by using the wrong screwdriver (usually smaller) or wrong type screwdriver, or using the right one, in a wrong way. Hope this helps.

Very nice and thorough review! I've heard you can also sharpen leads for lead holders on the opposite side. Don't know how thick. By the way is brass bad for us as some believe because it contains lead (pb). Would love to hear your opinion about the M+R pollux, castor sharpeners. And the brass DUX adjustable

My top choices are: KUM Masterpiece ( I hate ne for not getting this one sooner, thinking the Automatic longpoint is almost as good and more versatile. I was 100% wrong.) Next it has to be KUM Automatic long point, for its versatility, quality and performance. This round M+R is in the basket for my next order!

Thank you for sharing your experience with the different Kum models! I've only tried the longpoint. I hope the M&R works just as well for you.

@@PotatoArtStudios KUM also makes some of the best Watercolor brushes I've ever used! Same quality as the famius brushes Da Vinci, but with way better price tags and the same,if not better performance! You should try the Masterpiece, its very versatile, because you can remove the safe stop. Also the tip it creates, is WAY longer AND stronger, compared to the poor automatic longpoint! Thanks a lot!!

Thanks you. I was looking for a sharpener for charcoal & pastels. However pricing in Australia through Amazon is ridiculous. Sharpener is $25, blades $25 & husky tool is $38.

That is quite a markup! I would not buy the sharpener at that price either. I hope you can find a local retailer that carries it at a much more reasonable price Tania.

I watched your video last week and thought wow, I need the M+R 602 round. Maybe I missed it on the video but I needed the sharpen Conte Paris large diameter pastel pencils. The sharpener just arrived this morning. I’m VERY disappointed. It broke the lead two out of three of pencils I tried. The diameter of the lead in Conte Paris larger than the smallest section. Had some success on one pencil with a fairly sharp but SHORT point. I’ve ordered a 60 set of Fabre Pitt pastels, we’ll see if it works on smaller diameter. I need to keep searching and watch some additional videos, probably electric, don’t know. DO NOT BUY THE M+R 2 HOLE TO SHARPEN CONTE PARIS, IT DOES NOT WORK.

Hi Jim, I appreciate your feedback with the 602 and Conte pastel pencils. Conte does have a tendency to break more often than the other pastel pencil brands I own (Stabilo, Faber-Castell, Koh-I-Noor, and Derwent). I think it's a combination of the pastel core to wood ratio and the formula of the pastel itself. I've found that Caran d'Ache pastel pencils break about the same frequency as Conte because of the soft pastel formula. Unfortunately with the fragile nature of pastels, there will be breakage - but the Mobius and Ruppert sharpeners consistently perform the best out of all the sharpeners I've tried so far. Faber-Castell PITT pastel pencils do handle very well in the 602 sharpener. They have a very firm pastel core. I think you'll be much happier with the performance of the 602 with your PITTs.
